Rowe - A conundrum?

Recommended Posts

I'm pleased obviously he scored twice today - I would guess right time right place.

Trouble is in many games including this one he's otherwise absent without leave.

What to do ?

What a ridiculous post. You'll find that many top players are 'in the right place at the right time'. That's why they're good.

Rowe suffers slightly from being played in a wide position with a huge amount of running to support both defence and attack which is why he's regularly substituted off (because he's knackered).

If I had my way he'd be playing centrally either as a striker or number 10, but he's doing incredibly well to be our top scorer while playing out wide. Contrast him with our other wingers and their output in terms of goals and assists.

Absent from where exactly? He's incredibly hard working and still only 20 FFS.

Right time, right place? No such thing in football, it's called positioning.

Who criticises a young, up and coming player having a quality breakthrough season on THE DAY he scores 2 in his first East Anglian derby?

I think Rowe's signal of (ahem), 'the number 2' to the Ipswich fans today is relevant to the OP as well.

Agreed. It’s remarkable what he’s achieved this year. And he’s not done yet. Deployed as a 10 he could likely do even more.

He's basically feeding off scraps, the same goes for all our attacking players. They get an opportunity to do something occasionally but the lack of structure means that if it's not something special then it usually amounts to nothing.

If we were a side who could regularly get the ball to him in the final third in 1v1 situations he'd look even better. The reason he doesn't is down to tactics, not his ability.

He’s our next gem to sell (as we always do) he’s already scored more headed goals this season than idah could ever dream of. A very special player who’s already being looked at by top flight teams.

I get the point you’re making.

His overall game needs work.. he’s not someone who links play very well, which can be a problem when we need an outlet.

But my word, if played to his strengths, he’s so effective. He wants to take one or two touches and smash it towards goal..and his shooting ability is class. Sainz, looks similar actually.

Doesn't sound as though you're 'pleased obviously' at all. His 1st goal was class, his 2nd was straight at a **** poor goallie.

He's playing where he's told to play. The system doesn't suit him, that's not his fault. Imagine JR in a team built around him.

Thank you. I will ignore the other shallow posts.

The question to me is to get him more involved in open play, especially link up play. He is far from the finished product at present but clearly knows where the net is.

Scored two goals in a 2-2 draw.

that’s good enough for me

Jonathan Rowe's on 0.63 goals per game, but is getting flack for not doing doing enough other things. Adam Idah is a great all round contributor but is on 0.49 goals per 90 minutes and gets flack for not getting enough goals...

Let me frame it for everyone.

Rowe is 20 years old and scored twice in the East Anglian derby, with our bitter rival club (Ipswich) on the ascendency.

There‘e nothing left that needs to be spelled out or said

Still young and lots to learn. But 11 goals in a stuttering team as this point of the season is exceptional.

I understand where you’re coming from but goodness me this is his breakthrough season and he’s only 20. I’m absolutely delighted with what he’s showing and plenty of potential to improve other aspects of his game.

He's a kid. He's scored 11 goals

11 this season, his break out season and 2 against the scum. In a massive high pressure game

Supposed Norwich "fans" on this forum don't deserve this guy. A hero.

Rowe is the standout next star.

Don’t understand the “absent” comment. He is a game changer.

No one is denying he isn’t a quality footballer. It’s how and where to play him to maximise his attributes.

Part of the reason we struggle to control games is we have two ball playing central midfielders who look to play progressive football, but it doesn’t work well with very direct attacking midfielders who don’t look to hold the ball and  pass and move, like Rowe, Sainz and Hernandez. Imagine Buendia, Cantwell and Dowell in front of Sara and Nunez.. I think Rowe and Sainz are better suited to a 4-3-3.

I think Rowe is quality. But the question raised does highlight the imbalance we have.

He gives the ball away too much. That can be rectified.

But, by gum, does he come alive in the box!! Electric!!! That sort of gift is just priceless.

Mate - they’re not shallow posts. Your OP was ridiculous.

Yes Ron. He's good in the box but elsewhere?

That's the conundrum.

It's great to have a young player with that touch of real quality. The ability to change games.

But yes, he had the fewest touches of any player (8) in the first half today.

However, getting him more involved in games is as much his teammates' responsibility as it is his.

Like strikers, wingers need good service. Giving them the ball in the right areas, at the right times. Remember how Pukki struggled once his supply line was cut.

Rowe is young and has the undoubted potential to become a very good player, and at a higher level.

He's not there yet. Though I suspect there's a lot more to come from young Jon Rowe.

Personally I don’t care. Other players could have had 50 touches in the first half. Without Rowe and his goals we would have lost, end of. He’s a superb player who is still learning his game and, along with Sara, is one of the few real quality assets we have.
