I saw a comment on another thread about Gibson and Duffy being the prime centre back pairing (if you consider Omo staying) and got me thinking.

If this is the case, and it’ll be interesting to know all your thoughts otherwise, where does that leave Hanley when he gets fit? Fourth pecking?

Equally, where does that leave the captaincy should Hanley now find himself 4th in the chain.

And, who do we have as 4th whilst he continues his rehab should he still be out by the time the season starts. I’m confused, and randomly, in a good way.

It’s a conundrum if there was any. Thoughts, feelings, emotions Pink Un… the floor is yours…

I guess a lot will depend on when Hanley comes back and how we are doing.

If our season is going great, we have a settled CB pairing and it doesn't need changing, then I guess Hanley may find himself out in the cold.

If all isn't going well, I can see Hanley coming back in.

Guess we'll see in January?

Hanley and Gibson are often a respective calamity. Hopefully Andy and Duffy will form the first choice pairing.

I'd probably look to loan in a centre back from somewhere, or maybe use Tomkinson as the fourth if the coaches think he's ready. That way, we'd have four specialists for the first half of the season, and then after Hanley returns we could maybe look to shed one of the five in January if need be.

If Hanley recovers from injury ok, then him to replace Gibson. Gibsons a better passer out from the back, but for me Hanley offers more as a CB. Him and Duffy would be quite good. As it stands let Omo and Gibson battle it out next to Duffy.

If Omo stays, Duffy and Omo. If not Duffy and Tomkinson. We should always look to bring through the young lads using the experience of the "veterans"

Exactly how I see it. A youngster and a veteran.

Well as they say in the trade , captains lead from the front so Ashley has to be a contender, always rated him , yeah goal  scoring record not amazing , but always been a handful and he's started off well here !

I've never been a fan of Hanley. He is excellent in the air, but other than that, I don't rate him at all. I know most disagree, but I like all footballers to be footballers first, rather than defenders first (why I've always liked John Stones). I think the days of defenders throwing their broken bodies in front of the ball with Terry Butcher bandages should stay in the past, and Hanley for me is that type of defender; he controls / passes a ball at Sunday league level and I don't want to watch any footballers with equivalent technique to people I've played against.

I also think in this division, Gibson is much more use to us starting attacks, because we will have more of the ball but much less use in the Premier League.

Andy been found out when it mattered for months . Has to be Duffy and Gibson - they look at last like a really solid defensive unit .  Andy again flapping around today . Just needs a bit more time . Too much pressure put on him after the Hanley and Gibson injuries last season . He will be the business in time ... Sadly looks like away from Carrow Road .

Q.    Who has most potential to be a EPL player right now?

Not Duffy, age.

Not Gibson, lacks quality

Not Hanley, lacks quality

As far as I can see, we only have one at this moment, therefore we need to play him.

I say this in full acknowledgment of my utter lack of footballing knowledge, but Hanley is a top quality Championship defender. Others unconnected with the club can see this, why is it so hard for our supporters?

As long as he recovers fully, he is miles ahead of Gibson and Andy O. Duffy, we will see.

Lets clear up a few points before discussing the CB question.

Tompkinson serious injury might not see this season.

Hanley see comments re Tompkinson.

Gibson only left sided CB however is a liability and is unreliable and makes critical errors that lead to goals.

Duffy jury is out hope better than Gibson as good **** Hanley.  But faint praise as Hanley suffers from that which afflicts Gibson.

Omabamidele the great hope has feet of clay and hasn't show has the ability to be a top or a second class defender.

Wagners we will go with 3 CB's is fraught with danger.  Injuries have proved this in the past need another CB which we can't afford, others being tried are not proper CB's and may do a job but not a good one.  Look to the EFL lower leagues wher there are capable if not brilliant CB's who would be capable of filling the position at a cost we could afford.  Carl Piergianni ar Stevenage looks a contender good defender with a goal in him, you have been told a future CB at a much higher level.

L1 and 2 not a WEbber/Wagner hunting ground but one that needs considering if you're skint.

Hayley’s injury is as bad as they get. There is no guarantee the player who returns can play at the same level or intensity as the one who got crocked. I wish him the best but it is doubtful he will be able to perform as he did- time will tell.

Pretty clear Duffy & Gibson will start next Saturday. Big Andy on the bench with Warner next in line while Hanley and Tomkinson are out. No idea on Grant's return but Tomkinson due back late August from what we last heard.

Would of course expect Omabomidele to be pushing the incumbents and Hanley when he's back, if he returns from injury as good as new (big if) then for me he starts with Duffy but that's a fair way off. I all six are here and fit in January then the two young uns need to be out on loan playing somewhere.

When we went to Liverpool that first day on 2019/20 season, Hanley had to play because of injuries but was considered 4th choice at the time despite being more experienced.

Oh, how we’ve declined.    Funny ol’ game…. And some fans are desperate for him back in the team.

"Good news delivered by Wagner after the Olympiacos game, with an initial 10 to 12 week lay off, following that ankle damage at Kaiserlautern, now reduced to four to six weeks on the sidelines. Looked composed in the early pre-season games, and was clearly in Wagner’s plans."

Davitt ... the Pink.

Our youngsters are our bread and butter and this boy is evidence that the conveyor belt is in good shape.

I don't think we will see Hanley again in this team.

Tomkinson will be back long before Hanley, McCallum is being groomed to move centrally (he played at CB on occasion at QPR and Placheta is a serious left back proposition ahead of Sam). Hanley's injury at his age will be difficult to recover from.

Also Gibson (and indeed McCallum) being left footed brings balance to the defence; Gibson will start ahead of Omo.

So Duffy, Gibson, Omo, Tomkinson, Warner, McCallum, Stacey [and now  Adegboyega] all ahead of a crocked Hanley.

It's impossible to say right now. Depends on form because I don't think there's much between the four of them, with Omo clearly have the most potential, but it is only potential right now.

If Hanley was fit, a pairing of Hanley and Duffy is a potential league winning combination of players. Both should be in the top few in their position in the league stats wise. I'm just got sure we've got the goals to go with it at the other end.

In the meantime though, I'd prefer Omo to play so he can progress but would understand if we go for experience in Gibson
