Well Done Leeds.

Even if football doesn't switch to a stopped clock, there are loads of quite simple changes that could be made to prevent time wasting.

  • Insisting players who go down injured are escorted off the pitch for treatment where possible
  • Substitutions- the rule of 'leaving the pitch via the nearest side' is barely ever enforced. I'd add to that that once a players number goes up they've got 20 seconds to get off the pitch. If they aren't off by then then you lose the substitution
  • Actually enforcing the 6 second rule when the ball is in the keepers hands

Just start giving out cards to cheats and divers.  Most of the time lost is either someone pretending they are hurt so they don't get a card themselves, or someone trying to cheat the opposition to win a free kick/pen.

Stamp that out and you get rid of a lot of the time wasting too, plus makes the game a more enjoyable experience to watch. It's been allowed to be ruled by cheats and as a result so stop-start.

The problem with that is its hugely subjective as to whether someone is pretending they are hurt and you open up a huge can of worms there, forcing a referee to make a judgement call as to whether the play who is down is faking it.

As is escorting players off the pitch - all of this is subjective.  If you brought rules in as you've stated above they are open to abuse.  Players say they're too injured to be moved, suddenly 1-2 minute situations become 4-5 minutes.  Keepers are counted for 6 seconds when holding the ball, they can fall down faking injury to earn more time.

As I see it VAR is checking for a gnats gonads difference between a players toe, they could certainly use it in a more positive fashion to clean the sport up when players are rolling around the game has come to a 'natural' pause.  There's no reason you can't card someone if they've hurt themselves or not when simulating.

And if they can't do it mid-game then have a post match review by a board of that punish such simulations.

The sport is becoming less about contact and more about earning first downs like an NFL game.  It's very easy to spot when a player is deliberately hooking their leg into another, and nothing is done about it.  Trouble is most are happy to accept it as part of a skillset of a modern day footballer.

Is that what happened though? I've seen 5 minutes turn into 7 at Carrow Road for no apparent reason whatsoever

Thought I would check the match stats, Dominic Iorfa was injured in the 92nd minute and received treatment before being substituted  so I reckon that accounted for the three minutes of added time, Wednesday scored the goal that took the game to extra time in the 98th minute so I am guessing, given the magnitude of that goal, the celebrations accounted for the two minutes that took the total added time to 10 minutes.........

Sorry, I thought we were talking about Wolves v Everton. I must try harder.

One of the problems with the current system is that the fourth official checks with the main official some two or three minutes before the 90th how much additional time to signal. So it is not just incidents in the added time that get added to playing time, but also any incidents in the last 2 to 3 minutes of normal time.

It's a nonsense. Other sports have used a countdown approach / independent time keeper visible to all for decades. It just looks so silly when such controversies occur.

At some point the game has to modernise and move to a stopped clock situation. Suddenly timewasting is a thing of the past.

This and allowing subs to me made as play continues. If you have an injury fine, but if you sit down because you’re feeling a bit crampy then you sit there. If you can manage to drag yourself off like a hero then a new sub can come in. You watch all those strolling off sprint if it means the replacement can’t get on and the opposition get a numerical advantage

Having an independent panel after a match looking at probable (but specific) cheating situations, such as 100% blatant diving would be a good start. Then the issuing of retrospective yellow/red cards might change the attitude of the usual suspects.

Can't see it ever happening. However in the Pl with the availability of VAR I'm sure it could be implemented.

Although I would love Everton and Leeds to go down.(Don't think it will happen, but you never know)

I would also like Maddison to leave Leicester so that we increase the amount of pennies we have. 👍

Won't matter because wish we were Leeds had already moved seamlessly to wish we were Forest.

Much like the conveyor belt on the generation game...

"Didn't they do well?"

I'm lost. I thought we still wished we were Brentford.

Or Bournemouth.

Or Brighton.
