Warnock was on his way?

Recommended Posts

That's a really old quote.

I first heard that more than ten years ago.

Back then, I think the punchline was, "What? You mean, winning football?"

But then again he likely tells that joke about any club who don't give him a job. Gullible folk call him a character. Brighter folk think he's just a Colin.

That's a really old story.

But it does have the advantage of coming with one of those classic Colin pictures where he looks like a bald man sitting directly in front of a man with hair.

Indeed, very old story.  He’s a decent guy, huge knowledge, but not for us.

This latest version of the story has strong David Brent 'big boy sh1t' vibes. "I looked them in the eye one by one. Slagging you off, they were."

Thing is I’ve warmed to Warnock over the years.

His style of football is dictated by the quality of player that he’s got. He doesn’t put square pegs in round holes. Or try and get donkeys to dribble out of defence.

Also he first of all make you hard to beat. Then build on that foundation. Something we could really, really do with. We’re soft and a Warnock is the sort of thing we need to toughen us up. Not for one minute saying we should have gone after him before or now just wish some of his better attributes were in our mangers locker along with his own!

I've warmed to him as well over the years. I used to hate him, starting with when his dirty Sheff Utd team beat us 3-2 in 2002 and got absolutely every decision from the ref to his 'referee 'ates us' interview. He used to really annoy me but he's mellowed a bit over the years and he's good at what he does.

His teams get the basics right and focus on being good in both boxes. He's limited but if I was a club owner who had a team struggling in the Championship he'd be my first choice to turn it around.

I know what you mean about him having attributes that we could do with, but if we could find a manager who had Warnock's ability to motivate players and get the basics right as well as being able to implement a good playing style, develop young players, work under a Sporting Director and all the other things we normally look for in a 'head coach' he'd be well out of our reach and those two approaches are often incompatible. A combination of Warnock and Farke (for example) doesn't exist and it would be impossible for them to make us all that a Warnock team is as well as all that a Farke/Wagner side is or could be.
