Well myself and @chicken are both involved in teams in the lowest division of the Norfolk Veterans League... although we beat them 3-1 on Sunday, so I guess if it's the lower the ability the better, you should probably join his lot! Any idea how you're looking for players next season, Chicken? We more often have to leave people out than beg for extras, but I'm sure we can find a home for you.

Doesn’t Huckerby play vets football?

Yes, and Wes, for Cringleford.

Dury, Holt, Howie plus others also have previously,  not sure they still do.

Heres a pic inc Wes in the line up.

I can have a word with my manager. Our season is done now. Been a bit up and down but was our first season. All very good tempered largely.

Hi Guys,

I actually did a Google search for Vet's football in Norwich and this thread was one of the results so I thought I'd bump it up.

I'm looking to play again, not played for about 3 or 4 years, and thought I'd ask the question.

Is anyone aware of any Vet's football I could get involved in? Not necessarily a 'Team', although I wouldn't be opposed to it. I'd be happy just playing for fun too.

I used to play at a pretty decent level back in Lincolnshire for a number of years. I'm now 40 and just miss kicking the ball around, frankly.

@chicken and @Feedthewolf sorry for tagging you guys, but you seem to be the ones in the know on this.

I'm in a funny situation at the moment and with the summer break might be looking for a new team myself.

I’m interested in this too. Been looking to join and vets team in Norwich. Or just a regular organised match / kickabout if there’s enough people

Is 35 really a "veteran" these days?

. I played veteran football for a while and I suspect a few were younger than 35, I was in my late forties and it was a tough gig 😀..........................

It was in the league in Bolton I played in. That said, there's a vets five-a-side league I play in now and they have vets as over 30s. Doesn't stop this 43-year-old stopper annoying the hell out of everyone even now.

Have you seen supervets?! Norfolkfa.com It’s over 45’s … I played a couple of times and was good fun. Or if enough keen we could get a 5-a-side Monday night team enter bottom div at Goals! We did that last season until couldn’t get a team together.

If anyone a bit older thinks they will struggle a bit with vets I can recommend walking football, just as much fun but not quite as stressful on the joints and lungs

As a further option I was going to suggest Man vs Fat. Started playing again this year at 44 and have loved it. Not too competitive and real mix of abilities, plus very well organised - sign up and get put in a team. The support for weight loss and also men’s mental health is superb IMO.

Its 5/6-a-side but in Cambridge where I’m based we have played 11-a-side against other locations too.

Obviously you need to be a certain BMI to play and I can’t vouch for the Norwich league but I’ve been really impressed. Funnily enough I found out about it by accident via comments on Jack Reeve’s Twitter/X (who I don’t actually follow) earlier in the year.

Isn’t that just a kick about as opposed to organised leagues? I went for a job interview with them once, most qualified and experienced bloke in the room but didn’t get it as hadn’t been on a ‘weight loss journey’

if anyone has dodgy knees I’d advise keeping away from anything which involves playing on 3G or any artificial surface.

I don’t live in area anymore but know Horsford have a decent vets setup

Used to run the FA People’s cup in a previous job and the walking football section was hilarious, all started off with the lads obeying the rules but by the end there was definitely some light running happening lol

It is an organised league so there are proper fixtures and cups but the weight loss is added to the on-pitch results - so you might win 2-1 on pitch but final score is 9-7 once goals are added on from weight loss. So I’m out goalkeeper but also second top scorer as doing ok shedding the pounds.

Sorry to hear your experience wasn’t great and certainly coaches and admin here in Cambridge doesn’t have that ‘positive’ discrimination around a weight loss journey.

As I said above I’ve been hugely impressed and it’s been great for me. I thought it’s a bit of an in-betweeny option for those who who don’t fancy power league in terms of competitiveness but not quite ready for walking football. A lot of players in our league play MvsF and then play other footy during the week too.

Yup, and some teams will literally recruit players 35-39 just to be better.

A couple of seasons ago we played against Cromer who had two professional boxers playing for them... I know it doesn't make them good footballers (they were) but being a professional athlete puts you on a different page.

I did not mind the fact I was playing against younger players as I used to keep myself reasonably fit, but I did sometime find it tough playing against blokes that were a good 15 years younger than myself..

It just amused me to think about my years of playing footy from youth football where you looked at a player and thought "no way is he 12" to veteran football and thinking "no way is he 35".........

It is what it is. They didn’t think i was the right fit and that’s fine

I’ve moved on to a different path now and loving it

Taken me a while to reply to this, as I'm not really involved in the veterans' scene much any more due to my refereeing commitments. I'm still registered to play for my team (Newsman Valhalla) and still pop along to watch occasionally, but I'm no longer secretary and have no input in the running of the club.

We still have a Tuesday night kickabout all year round, but that's usually oversubscribed even with our current squad, so it'd be difficult to get any new players involved at this juncture. Plus, we only played a measly 10 league games last season, and most of our players were itching to play more games, so again it'd be difficult for us to accommodate new players. We're pretty rubbish to be honest (lowest division, mid-table), but for us it's more about the social than actually trying to move up the divisions.

I've got various contacts in the vets league, though, as I used to be on the committee, so if anyone's looking for a club then feel free to drop me a DM and I'll see if I can fix you up with a suitable one. And that includes you, @chicken – I thought I'd not seen you around at any Viking matches recently (I've refereed and/or watched most of your teams at some point this season!).
