dylanisabaddog 6,133 Posted March 16, 2023 Gareth Southgate says it was "a no brainer" to put Toney in the England squad. A bit baffling to say the least. Does Southgate know something we don't?

dylanisabaddog 6,133 Posted March 16, 2023 Southgate says there hasn't been a trial yet. Is he unaware that Toney has accepted most of the charges?
sgncfc 1,330 Posted March 16, 2023 Southgate has also picked Walker - pending his further investigation for indecent exposure. This from a manager who justified excluding Maddison on the basis that a higher standard of behaviour is expected from England players. He also continues to pick Maguire who hasn't done anything illegal for a year or two but who is just a useless player at that level. I wouldn't have Southgate in charge of the under 9's let alone the England team.
Don’t be Krul 452 Posted March 16, 2023 Southgate will always have his favourites, whether they're regular for their clubs, injured or not. I am referring to Maguire, Henderson and Phillips. Whilst off the top of my head I can't think of like for like replacements in midfield I watched Tomori v Spurs the other week and he was outstanding. And Southgate says it is impossible to pick players on form. Poppycock. Ben White is bang in form, more so than Reece James but don't expect White to get a call up again whilst Southgate is in charge

That information comes from a leak from the FA so it wouldn’t be fair to treat it as a finding. As far as I’m aware no other player accused of being involved in betting has been pre-emptively suspended by the FA without a hearing even if they had privately indicated they were not contesting the charges. Pretty much the fans of everyone we’ve played since the leak have moaned he shouldn’t be allowed to play so the FA can’t claim the leak has been irrelevant. The leak also included comments attributed to Southgate about him being unimpressed by Toney’s efforts in training when last called up. A Bees fan I know and trust spoke to Southgate at our game last weekend and GS was not happy about that report and denied it while hinting he was going to pick him. I think there’s quite a bit of embarrassment at the FA about how they’ve handled this and GS isn’t letting them push him about. We also don’t know the specifics of the charges. I suspect had they been at the most serious end (eg betting on outcomes in games he played) there would have been a quicker hearing on a shorter list of charges aa well as less support from the club. It’s possible they could be at the other extreme (eg he might just have called his mum, a betting shop manager, before every game for a chat as a dutiful son living alone in digs in S****horpe etc to tell her if he was playing and she might have told this as a proud mum to a workmate who themselves placed bets based on the info without any more connection- yes, that would technically count and yes I’m clutching at straws in hope!).
