On this day in 1985

I was a 13 year old at that game, my late father & me went absolutely crazy when that goal went in & at the final whistle, we ended up on the pitch with thousands of fans. It's a night which I'll never forget.

Just before my time.

Would it be fair to say that this goal marked the point when we overtook Ipswich? They'd had a lot of success in the 70s and 80s, but since then we've almost always been the higher-placed club, haven't we?

I guess we were relegated at the end of that season, so perhaps it was the following year, when we won the old Second Division at a canter and Town were relegated. I just think the moment that Bruce's header hit the back of the net is the more dramatic moment.

I took my Dad to that match. He hadn't been for years and we stood in the Barclay. He wanted to stand so leaning up against one of the barriers. I said to him that wasn't a wise move, glad of that because I'll never forget the surge when we scored

Yes, I would say that this was the turning point. They certainly did have a lot of success in the 70s but only until the first few years of the 80s so 1985 was definitely a watershed. We only got relegated because Coventry were allowed to play three games after everyone else had gone to the beach. The binners survived by a point and then got relegated the following season. However, we were in a much stronger position financially and squad wise at the time and won the title the following season quite easily but the binners never returned quickly - I don’t think until the first premiership season of 92/93.

For context, my son was born in 1992 and he would laugh uncontrollably at anyone suggesting that 1p5wich are a better side or club than us. he has never seen them win anything, hardly ever beat us and of course there was the play offs in 2015.

That header was massive for many reasons and the celebrations on the pitch at the end were unforgettable. The night at Pompey came close also.

Great night in a packed River End 👍

Certainly was. Me and a mate bunked off evening lectures at City College, supposedly ‘to get his car fixed’, to which the lecturer replied “going to the match are you lads?”, with a knowing grin. I think I and several thousand of us in the River End lower terrace surged forward with SB to nod it in. It was mayhem, never seen before (… or since?) in the RE. I know we won the Final and that was special, but the very fact it was ‘them’ in the SF makes it that little bit better.

Thanks for the really thoughtful reply, much appreciated. I went to my first City game in 1985, the last home game of the season. So I didn't see my first East Anglian derby until the first year of the Premier League, and it took me a while to understand what the rivalry is all about. But as far as I'm concerned we've always been better than them!

I mentioned to my lad a few weeks back about Charlton being a team we were looking to emulate and he started laughing.

I couldn't convince him I was being serious, had to resort to a google search which took me to a really old thread on here.  He still thought I was winding him up though, wouldn't even look at my phone!

Unfortunately those two games in the 92/93 were both defeats for us and ultimately cost us finishing in second place rather than third in the PL.
