Norwich time wasting and play acting

Recommended Posts

I shudder to think what they saw. Surely they saw a tackle that should have been rewarded with a straight red but was yellow for which Max got one for kicking the ball away. Surely they saw that their long ball worked for a while against us but once Hanley and Gibson decided to defend as a proper CB partnership, they had no other tactic.

I understand bias, its in all of us, but we had the same at Bristol City. One of their fans told me their free flowing football beat our just kicking the ball. Even when I pointed out our 65% possession surely indicated a passing game he just waved it away without comment.

Fair play to a team that takes its chances and we don't. But don't believe for one moment that in virtually every game this season, even under Smith, we have dominated possession which means we are a passing side.

Good job we didn't have Tim Krul taking an absolute age for everything in the last few minutes !

Also there does seem to be a lack of self-awareness among supporters of more thuggish teams that their players are actually committing lots of fouls and it's not all about the other side "playacting" when their players scythe through them.

They literally moan about everything, pretty funny really!

I enjoy the Millwall fambase, proudly claiming no one likes them and they "don't care", yet I've never known a fanbase who worry about their reputation more.

I think Aarons is definitely guilty of going down way too easily almost every game, can't think of any others in our team who do though.

Hanley, and it irritates the hell out of me as he looks stupid doing it at his size

Hanley is excellent at it. I really rate it. I've always felt we're too "nice" trying to do things "the right way" and then losing out because of it. Hanley literally creates the contact and goes down. Ref's buy it. Ref's are awful. Etc etc.

Dimi looks like he has been shot by the lone gunman on the grassy knoll at times. Although he was given a real clout on Saturday that should have been a red card.

With Hanley it's pretty much par for the course for a CB nowadays, if he's going backwards with the ball under pressure from a striker, and feels a push, he goes down.  When it's up at the other end we know it's going to happen, especially when we're chasing the game.  Aarons is pretty similar, he feels a push and he's going down.

Krul is adept at taking a long time over kicks at the end when we're ahead (like may goalies).  I noticed Gunn was doing the thing on Saturday when he decides to take the GK from the other side of the box to waste a few more seconds, and also waiting the last second until a striker comes towards him before picking it up.  But in terms of delaying the kick itself, he's not up to Krul's level.

I'd say as a team we do this less than most, but yes we do it.  I think we need to decide, do we want our players to be streetwise or not?

There was a long discussion on here recently about Idah not going down when he was tripped by the GK and many felt he should have gone down (personally I think it was pretty likely the ref would not have given the foul so I think he did the right thing, but plenty felt he should have gone down).

I always think of Boro as the worst offenders I've ever seen for this when they were 1-0 up at CR, not long before we played them in the playoff final, and they went down for absolutely everything, including their GK receiving the ball with no one anywhere near him and promptly falling over "injured".  That was the worst example of a team timewasting and feigning injury I have every seen, I was very relieved they didn't have a lead to protect at Wembley, or you know it would have been taken to new depths !

Remember that well. On many occasions the game was stopped because one of them was lying on the floor without having been involved in the play at all.  Hanley will get truly caught out with his playacting one day and it will cost us.

Hanley winning those fouls takes the pressure of our defence every time he does it. So if he gets "caught out" once or twice it'll still be overall a benefit to the team.

This is great news, what was so pleasing about the result on Saturday is we best Millwall at everything…skill, passion, fouls, gamesmanship. So often we are nice norwich playing pretty but ineffective football. It’s about time we also learnt sometimes you need to put your foot in and take a player out before they get close to your goal.

Purists might not like it but it’s all part of the game.

We really need to watch our dresscode at places like the Den, they seem to be incredibly fashion bias...

Maybe the club could do a bulk order on Stone Island gear in custom yellow?

Not if he throws himself down but the ref waves play on and the forward goes on and scores!!

They're Millwall. They cheered, Clapped and shouted 'this is why we voted for brexit proper English football!' when their player went diving into a two footed studs up slide tackle

I know what you mean but over the course of an entire season he might have saved 5 or 6 goals just by relieving the pressure of attacks by winning those freekicks. I'm guessing that's how the management see it as they've clearly not told him to stop!

Spot on. Amazed he keeps getting away with it .

Yup. When their keeper went down he had no idea which part of his body  to hold so he ended up just pretending to be unconscious!

Ha ha . I also love the idea that Millwall is a tough area based on grafting in the docks. Anyone that’s been to Bermondsey lately will know it’s yuppie-ville and most of the “ hard nuts “ are kids from Kent .

Def looked a red but this was the same ref who sent Dimi off when he ‘fouled’ Ben Pearson

Totally agree. If anything we were still way too nice Saturday. The ref totally bottled that red card and he knew it and preceded to give us pretty much everything going.

When it comes to tackling make sure you get a bit of the man as well as the ball. Psychologically it helps if your opponent has in the back of their mind, that they might get injured.

It’s quite simple if the opposition don’t like it, don’t try and tackle him from behind. I suspect we can all see when he’s going to go down the second there’s contact, you’d expect a professional footballer to be able to spot it too.
