The high line.

Recommended Posts

The main reason imo why we won the game was because the team set up was so attacking - Hernandez, Sara, Dowell, Mclean, Aarons and Giannoulis - effectively five attacking midfielders, with one of Sara/Mclean interchanging as to who stayed back. Even Hanley and Omobamidele got well forwards at times. It was good to see.

Playing that way, we never allowed Hull to settle and although a better team might catch us out on the break, it was still a brave way to play and paid dividends. So a big improvement overall, but we played for ages without getting a shot off on goal, so many final balls innaccurate or just plain bad, but we did enough to win, thanks to Hernandez, Sara and Dowell who had good games.

Idah and Sargent? Ok, Idah the better of the two, but the ball still bounces off them too easily for my liking, but it shows we can win without Pukki, but would have preferred to see him for more of the match.

The high line relies on not making mistakes and giving the ball away and it is definitely more exciting to watch!  Enjoyed watching a match coming fro CR for the first time in ages (if @Graham Paddons Beard allows me to say so even though I wasn't there).

It’s definitely exciting, effective and brave, but it looks so dangerous at times if there’s a turnover. Instant opposition overload.

Hull did a really poor job of countering it though and when we did lose possession there was much more enthusiasm to get back and get the ball back than Saturday.

I thought Sara and McClean were much tidier and effective together on the ball as well as off it, not sure if that was down to Hull giving them more time and space though.

It’s always sad not to see a prime Pukki playing IMO but it’s something we will probably need to get used to. I thought Josh and Adam showed a really good developing partnership after just one game personally with some real strength from both winning and holding up the ball.

Kenny was definitely not playing as an AM; he stayed behind the ball for almost the entire game. Sara was often isolated in central midfield but we basically bypassed him in the buildup most of the time with the ball going wide more often than not.

Hull kept ignoring Aarons as he operated as a winger for much of the game so we could create overloads and always had an out ball. The high line was never an issue because our centre backs were quicker than their forwards, who themselves were pretty isolated so, when Hull went long, we won the ball almost every time.

I thought we played out from the back very well in general. We carved them open several times and should have scored once by beating the press. We need to keep working on that to make the passing and movement more accurate and consistent.

Hernandez needs to occasionally drop short looking for the ball in the 3/4 space rather than hitting the channels every time. Sargent and Idah need to work on their first touches. It's a work in progress.

Without Pukki we'll never have the same running off the shoulder. Sargent always seems to have his back to goal rather than looking to get in behind. However, crossing suddenly becomes a more reasonable option.

We probably should have scored a couple more goals. Dowell was 1 vs 1 and Idah should have squared for Sargent to tap in. 20 shots is great, but only 5 on target needs improvement. The big positive is that we were able to break down a stubborn defence and actually come back from behind to win.

Spot on Kenny played like a third defender, choosing to go left back, right back or central, depending on who went forward. Clearly our full backs under Wagner are more like wingers, as soon as we have the ball, they go forward and wide leaving The three at the back.
Having said that McClean drove us forward time and time again when receiving the ball in his stride.

I have the strangest feeling you are going to say plenty Lakey with or without my permission 😂

As well as a high line (as you put it ) you could also consider the shape change of sitting players in between the lines in the second half instead of allowing Hulls two banks of four / defensive low block in the first half that sent us wide via Aarons and Dimi in the first half . We played through the lines , in particular Sara , in the second half .

But you knew that .

Last night, the setup was exactly like Coventry and Preston (forget Burnley, they were just better) which altered against Brizzle. Kenny played higher Saturday and althoughnwe bossed the game, our FBs didn't get to have the same influence as they started from further back.

Stick with this system. Kenny was able to play a lot more longer passes especially with Idah up front.

I was going to say that it was just like the Preston game-didn’t see the Coventry match. Preston had a few good chances-which fortunately they didn’t take, not even the customary gift from Krul-so we do need to be very careful against the better teams.

Whilst I was please to witness a home win and some goals I will reserve judgment on whether out tactic or selection is another new dawn.

The main reason we won last night for me was that Hull were absolutely pants! They were as poor a side as I seen this season at Carrow Road. Yes they scored a goal but yet AGAIN it was a total gift handed to them through a combination of awful defending and inept goal keeping.

Hulls back room staff clearly don’t do there homework properly. They failed to press us at all last night. Any management worth its salt must know you press Norwich and you cause us loads of problems..

still it’s a win.
