Earnie unproven panic buy or an untapped resource???

Recommended Posts

Earnie has now completed maybe 4/5 games, how many has he scored?? a couple? one memorable one off the line last weekend vs Derby, would we have been better to bank the money until a new manager came in?? your thoughts please!! Where has Jarvis gone?? surely he could have filled the gap as a far cheaper option, now that we can no longer make the play-offs? I know I''m guilty as anyone else had Earnie come in and scored a hatfull we would have been dusting the car off for a trip to Cardiff. Now that is very very unlikely to happen, to me his signing looks like a total panic buy and a complete waste of money. That cash could have been spent wisely by our new manager.

I must admit I am a tad worried about Erny.  Never before this season had I been worried by our signings, they always looked good in my eyes when signed.  but now I definatly look more carefully.  Erny has a good goalscoring record, but he does not contribute much else.  we definatly need to sign a target man to play alongside him - like rasiak.  In games like the palace games when you have to clear your lines you need someone up front to hold the ball up.

It also begs the question how well have teams with Erny in them actually got on?? I mean Dean Ashton up front all season for norwich would have probably have kept us up.  He got Crewe from a relegation team to the top 6.

Personally i think with the right service from midfield (which we are in no way providing at the moment) he COULD fire in the goals to get us promoted.  However for that to happen we need a ball playing midfielder.

I realise he is 31 but in my view the man to do this could be Inigo Idiakiz.  He single handedly tore us apart at Derby and was not so threatening at carrow road because he is their only good player and we marked him out of the game.  But in our team, when people are busy marking hucks he could be something special. His game requires no pace so his age wouldnt make much of a difference and we have as many runners in the team as anybody needs.  he is also a free kick specialist and has a good goalscoring record - mainly free kicks and long range efforts.

Obviously if there was another younger prospect then they may be a better bet, but on current judgement from our scouts i doubt we would pick them up.

It is early days for him and wil take him a while to settle but I am a bit worried. He hasn''t threatened that much and our style of play doesn''t suit him. We''re hardly getting any balls in behind defences for him to run onto. He doesn''t offer much else - he can''t/won''t win headers because of his height, his first touch isn''t great and neither is his hold up play. However I still believe with the right service he will score lots of goals. Let''s give him a chance before we start writing him off as a bad signing! Any player needs time to settle in and a striker is often only as good as the service he''s given unless you''re seriously talented like Henry and can create a chance out of nothing for yourself. I don''t think Earnie will do that too much so it''s up to the rest of the team!!

Panic buy, needed to do something to placate fans.  Much cheaper options could have been found by effective scouting regime see Doyle, Lita, Kitson, Nugent, Howard, Vine, Jerome etc. etc.

We are unable to sound out little gems or Worthy will not gamble see his attitude to young players.

For me, the answer to this thread is "neither".  He is certainly not a panic buy as his previous record speaks for itself, and ''untapped resource''? Give the guy a chance! 2 goals in 5 is not that bad.

I''m not sure that questioning Earnshaw''s record stands up to too much scrutiny, and the answer to "how have sides got on with him in?" is easy: look no further than to last season and try the fact that West Brom stayed up largely because of his 14 goals for them, including a pen v Man U which took them into the last weekend not already relegated....

dont think earnie is the problem, its the supply of which there is none!

put him in the side that won the championship 2 seasons ago and he would have had a hat full!!!

i blame worthy for the signings in the midfield-i.e etuhu-hughes-jarret-robinson etc

what a load of s**** we could have given the youngsters a chance and saved the money!!!

In my opinion, Earnshaw was a panic buy. But he is not unproven.

His scoring record with Cardiff was excellent. And his brief spell in

the Premiership showed he can score goals there too. But as Brian

Robson used to point out, Earnshaw doesn''t seem to contribute an awful

lot else to the team.

As people have been pointing out for some time, having a proven goal

scorer means little if we can''t create chances for him to put the

ball into the back of the net. Ashton suffered here from the chronic

same lack of service. Personally I doubt think Earnshaw is as good an

all-round player as Ashton either. So he is unlikely to set-up goals

for his strike partner the way Ashton could. So it makes the demand for

a creative midfield all the greater. Sadly, we don''t have that.

Macdougalls perm:

It is very apt that you have replied, I remember as a kid watching Ted Mac and if it were humanly possible he did LESS than nothing EXCEPT put the ball in the net.

I agree with you, Earnie will do exactly the same for us if we provide the correct service for him, at the moment we don''t and if in a season''s time we still aren''t, he will want to leave us.

Ray Ducker, WBA have a manager who is about to get them relegated, and from listening to 606 tonight (that''s national radio rather than local, by the way) most Baggies fans want him sacked.

Earnie''s fine; he''ll score a shed-full of goals for us as soon as we appoint a manager who recognises a creative midfielder when he sees one.

Earnie has pace and can finish well provided we play to his strangths and give him the right service which would mean signing a quality midfielder to play with Safri - Koumas or Idiakez would be good!!
