Interesting that we have Poland potentially going through by virtue of having fewer yellows than Mexico. This in spite of Mexico giving it a real go and Poland making Wales last night look half decent. Surely there has to be a better way? Imagine going out because FIFA drew lotts too? That’d be horrific. Why not make it about stats, dare I suggest xG average score over the 3 games actually serves a better purpose here? It would at least be an indication of the team that gave it more of a go?

Nothing wrong with it. Rules are made clear before the tournament starts and if the teams don't like it, that's the time to raise objections.

There was a case in the African Cup of Nations where lots were drawn.

But underlying the calculation are so many subjective decisions - it would open up a whole new industry to agree a methodology and getting consensus would take years. At least once decided it would remove much of the debate on here of its usefulness of course.
