Former players now in management

Recommended Posts

Here I am in Oman watching a game on Arab tv and they show a great former City player who’s now managing one of the clubs, Youssef Safri, he’s in charge of Qatar SC.

Got me wondering which other former players are currently in management, I can think of only Steve Bruce and Russ Martin but I’m sure there are others around the world, can anyone think of anymore?

Carl Robinson has coached a few sides in the MLS and the Australian A-League, David Nielsen has coached in the top flights of Denmark and Norway,  and Jens Berthel Askou has coached a couple of sides in the Danish top flight.

I did have to Wiki those to make sure- I knew they were all coaching somewhere but didn't know exactly where...

Can’t believe nobody has mentioned Steve Bruce, he’s managed every single club in the football league and we only played his current team 5 days ago 🤣

And Jamie Cureton is player-manager at Enfield.

Sorry, just seen Brucie was mentioned in the OP 😜

Van Wijk, Martin O'Neill, Gary Holt, Deehan, Crook, Gunn, Peter Grant, anndbI am sure there are more

"Currently in management" rules out a good number of those.

Danny Self and Ben Thompson. I know they only played for the youth team but they currently manage Mulbarton. Masterminds of their Norfolk Senior Cup triumph last season!

Mike Phelan is probably still kicking about at that little club in Manchester isn’t he? Usually steps in as caretaker whilst they lurch from one brave new dawn to the next 😂

No.

He was player-manager at Hamilton, though.

My local team. I'm not young enough to see him play as I stopped attending Hamilton matches when I left school.

I do remember a young winger in my school daya, though. A certain Paul Hartley.

Sure Alex Neil turned out for the reserves a few times for us or am I mistaken?

I don't think so...

I have a vague memory of him making a joke in an interview about playing for the reserves or sitting on the bench or something

Maybe he was registered?

He was known as a player who wasn't the best, but he was a trier (back handed compliment), so I could definitely see him being registered.. just in case there was a spate of injuries.

After signing Wildschut for £7m and seeing him training he had to register himself to be fair. That transfer business hammers Ricky and Naismith really.
