****The Official Lapps Match Thread v Wigan (Champ) *****

Recommended Posts

I notice Burnley, who looked good against a poor Huddersfield side, could only muster a draw at home to Luton.

Anyone got the video of the max Aaron’s tackle, still haven’t seen how bad it was. Thanks In advance

Astonishingly there are people on twitter defending that challenge as perfectly fair because he “got the ball”

All the Wigan fans and a few Norwich fans who want to dismiss it so they can say how awful we are and created "no" chances etc.

The evidence was there at normal speed on Saturday. Its there at what ever speed you wish to view today. Dangerous play, foul, penalty, red card.

Footy accums is a pretty popular national Twitter account, I highly doubt the dissenting Norwich fans and the Wigan fans (particular Wigan of all clubs) are numerous enough to overweigh the vast number of neutrals. I’ve not seen many on here suggest it wasn’t a red either - I’m surprised that the general consensus seems to be that it’s a good tackle. Wonder if they’d be saying that if Aarons had seriously hurt himself!

It's not clubs who keep opta going, it's betting companies primarily. Broadcast and print media also. Clubs might use it as part of their performance analysis, but it essentially exists for betting markets.

Clubs and media are Optas biggest purchasers, not gambling markets. Opta are focused on biggest exposure where as companies like SmartOdds are specifically aimed towards the betting market, syndicates and don't broadcast themselves in the same way Opta do.

Bet365,, Coral, Ladbrokes, William Hill and SkyBet all settle bets using Opta data, and that is the countries 5 largest bookmakers.

They also use Opta feeds for their "in play" betting markets. Search opta on twitter and you'll find people complaining about number of corners bets not being settled, and the response is always that the bookmakers partner with Opta.

In terms of performance analysis of a clubs own players, why do clubs need to rely on an Opta scout pressing buttons on a tablet, clubs employ their own analysts who can simply watch a game on playback and do exactly the same thing in just 90 minutes, and then do it a second time to ensure accuracy. What is the purpose of 'real time' stats for a professional football team?

There are scouting uses for third party data, but to be honest I thought Wyscout was the market leading data provider for that now, the scouting courses seem to focus on Wyscout data.

I don't think that's true.  I have a significant contract with StatsPerform (who own the Opta brand) and, unless they have secret data hidden somewhere for clubs, the detail that they would need just isn't there.

Its literally just somebody with a tablet clicking 'shot', 'pass', 'corner', 'foul' buttons on a tablet, for the bigger games (live at the match).

Sometimes they do it from an office for more obscure foreign leagues, those people are mainly based in an office in Leeds.

But a lot of people who try and do that job get rejected for not being accurate enough, its definitely a skill and requires well above average focus and concentration, but you are correct its very basic data. its essentially what you see in the 'in game betting' section of a sportsbook (or in a tabloid match report, which is the media use), e.g. Norwich 7 Corners, Stoke 3 Corners.

Should imagine the club can get much more advanced information themselves, all the players basically wear black boxes on their chest now don't they.
