Looks like Schmeichel is going, Maddison could be off, others rumoured to leave and they still haven't bought anyone yet.

A sell on clause gives a club a certain percentage of the profit a club makes when they sell him on. York inserted a 10% sell on clause when we signed Ben Godfrey, and so when we sold him to Everton we had to give York about £2.5m

I don’t remember us putting a sell on clause in Maddison when we sold him but from what everyone’s saying it sounds like we must have. Sell on clauses tend to be in the range of 10 - 20%

It’s 15% of any profit.

The problem is that the original fee was a bit smoke-and mirrors (with various add ons like international clause), but whatever we’d definitely be in for a reasonable amount. 

Maddison is a great player, that he’s not played for England (competitively) is ridiculous.

Why would it be different? Just because there's a release clause, doesn't mean they can't offer lower to start with.

The point is not paying as much. No. It entirely isn't like a reserve price. A release clause is not an indication of present value at the time of contract signature (maybe years before the proposed sale) It's a guarantee to the player that the club won't stand in his way if they get a massive offer in future. If you're a buying club and a player you want has a release clause, you would be mad to immediately just offer that, unless you are in desperate need, as maybe they would accept less. Maybe a player had a huge potential at the time of contract signature but hasn't developed as expected, would you still play the release clause? Of course not.

Release clauses work differently to that. In most cases they are requested by the player. If it's around a fee, it tends to mean if a bid around or above a certain amount is tabled, the player has to be told and is automatically allowed to speak to the team who tabled it.

Essentially, it takes the owning club out of the equation. Sure, a lower offer can be put in, that might be accepted, but unlike an auction, there is usually dialogue first.

Team that is pretty consistently mid-table/top half these days still can't throw money around like a team freshly bought out by a middle-eastern state with questionable motives because of FFP... How on Earth are Newcastle able to consider offers of the like they are if Leicester can't?
