Hopefully with a bit more protection on the compulsory purchase terms, we don't want to be forced into buying a cripple. We are in a position of strength here as all we have to do is not pick Hayden, and he stays at Newcastle. I don't share the default view he's any better rhan what we have tbh. At the end of the day he's a proven premier League survivor, which immediately puts him above any of our players.

That does not indicate any underlying issues, just that he had a knee problem, started playing again but turned out he wasn't healed and had to have it operated on, which he is still recovering from. Other than hte knee (which I repeat he is still recovering from operation to fix) he has had a hadful of days out for little injuries/knocks apart from an ankle surgery 5 years ago which he has had no further reprecussions from. This is not an injury record to have set alarm bells ringing or cause consern, it is a single injury which ultimately needed surgery and he hasn't yet recovered from, if he will or not I don't know, but there's no reason prior to him signing for us that one should think that he wouldn't Yes sorry Sam you’re right I did misread your comment. I hear what you’re saying but almost feel the opposite. I think it’s more concerning to me that the same issue has been re-occurring multiple times rather than various separate issues or knocks. That could all just be impact related or plain bad luck. It also doesn’t really matter too much that his injury record was good prior to the knee problems, if it’s a problem that’s complicated itself and it’s worsened several times then it’s going to take longer to heal and still potentially give residual weakness even when ‘fully’ fit again. Doesn't really matter what you or I think, if the people at the club thought he could step up then it's not luck.
Mason 47 980 Posted September 29, 2022 When I tore my ACL when I was younger, the initial diagnosis from a specialist was 6-8 weeks. Eventually it turned out to be 12 months, and somehow- I'm absolutely not sure how as I really haven't behaved well enough in the ensuing 17 years- I've never re-injured. I'm sure Newcastle + our own medical teams gave the green light. Sometimes bodies don't react like they should

I love the spekkylayshun on this thread, we know sweet FA.

However highly we rate Hayden, however much we need a central defensive midfielder, however keen we are to integrate him, the hint of further knee issues is an excellent chance for Webber to renegotiate terms. Webber is no fool at all, the criticism here may be massively wide of the mark. Another explanation would be that we ‘encouraged’ a return-to-sender review precisely at this low point to get a discount. It could easily be canny timing and good business. I understand the new fluid on the knee is actually not considered a massive issue. Though presenting it in this way could see our deal improved based on our ‘increased risk’ and hitherto lack of game time. Parma Yep, as I see it Smith's comment today was a negotiator's opening gambit.
unique 353 Posted September 29, 2022 The longer this guy remains unavailable, the higher his stock seems to rise…… Hayden could yet end up the best defensive midfielder never to play for NCFC…….

SwearyCanary 1,029 Posted September 29, 2022 He was never going to be match fit for October anyway as far as I saw it. This being our genuinely tough month still applies but I’m mostly encouraged by news that Gibbs is back in training. He’s certainly more likely to get up to speed soon than Hayden was, so this is the real takeaway news. It’s going to be up and down this next few weeks. I’d settle for 18 points as a good return at this stage. Still holding out hope for Hayden

norfolkngood 618 Posted September 30, 2022 i have my doubts over Hayden it is not looking straight forward injury otherwise i am sure he would have been back playing we have been told he was injured then back training but not playing at Newcastle mainly down to them signing players then might of had a break ? then knee flared up again in Pre season i have no medical knowledge like the staff here but we have all seen these things happen before when players are never right again with knees or serious injuries hopefully he is one of the ones that recover

AJ 1,068 Posted October 1, 2022 The emergence of Gibbs has really helped shield what a bad punt this was. May as well have not bothered signing him until January
