Set piece coach appointed

Recommended Posts

Sensible idea. Our inability to both score from and defend set pieces was one of the most infuriating aspects of the Farke years so glad to see it is being address. We're no longer a team of midgets so there is no reason for us not to be better at both ends of the pitch.

This is great news

I posted this graph before with Brentford 3rd and us bottom.

That's 2 surprising bits of news in 2 days - both trying to address some of our worst weaknesses last year. I'm impressed!!

About bloody time, as much as we all loved Farke his lack of specialist coaching staff always bothered me

Does Smith say he wanted to recruit this person or someone to fill that role.

So what was the masterstroke of Webbers?

Especially if you read the article it’s heavily implied Smith was involved in bringing him here.

No one has doubted Smith was involved, but nowhere does it say he requested the coach by name.

Glad to see Smith having a massive influence and has clearly identified weaknesses in the current set up.

He can send Webber away now to find someone who can actually take a fcuking corner.

This guy isn't just a set piece coach, he works with the forward line as a whole.  Think of him as an attacking man, bringing on Idah will be a key goal of his I expect.

Another excellent acquisition, and another that I wish we had last season!   Things are looking brighter with each passing day.

His training program: http://www.superiorstriker.com/

Reading through some of the testimonials, it seems that he prides himself on scouting upcoming opponents and identifying weaknesses to exploit.  Smith seems like someone who is open to ideas, so very hopeful.

Actually, the composition of staff is the domain of the head coach.

GIYLF.

So lets ignore the fact Smith has thanked Webber then?

Maybe the previous coach already had someone coaching set pieces.

Have you seen our set pieces? Attacking or defending? Get real.

Indeed King Canary - it was mentioned on here many, many times in the last few years that we were complete gash at set pieces and maybe we needed a specialist in this area - good to see that Smith has identified that weakness and wants to turn it into a strength.

Professional sport is about marginal gains nowadays and clubs tend to have set piece coaches so all good IMO.

However, as ever, the proof of the pudding will be in the eating.

I never suggested he did?

What was Webbers masterstroke?

Does this include throw-ins? They’ve been driving me mad for years now, Max or whoever stands there looking for somewhere to throw, dithers because he has no options and half the time lobs it towards one of our players who has a marker all over him, meaning 50% of the time we lose possession.

How many coaches do we need? I would have thought a good first team coach would be good at coaching set pieces - isn't it part of the job?

It’s a specialist v generalist. Having a dedicated coach who focuses on one area in theory should see much better results in that area.

I’m not sure the issue? If money was no object I’m sure we would want to employ  more coaches wouldn’t we?

Well done 👏 ✔️ Deano. Nice to see that you can think ahead.

Looks like Deano is trying to move in the right direction. I think Stuart should be given more time off for Mountain things. Obviously Deano and Neil can more than deal with the job in hand. Yeah , for sure Stu take as much time off as you need.

Long throws around the box are very similar to set pieces, just about whether you have the player capable of throwing it well. We tried using Normann last season and they weren't effective at all.

I assume you did actually watch us play under Farke? As much as I loved the guy, we were poor defensively and offensively from corners, especially at the top level. Every time a corner went into our box, it was bicycle clip time.

In our 19/20 Premier League season, we were worst in the league for both scoring and conceding from set pieces; this appointment is something that is long overdue imo.

I don't think it says what you think it does...

Smith literally says there, that he had asked Stuart and Neil to bring in a set-piece coach. So I think we can safely say that Stuart and Neil brought in a set-piece coach... in Smith's own words. But hell, you know, why just rely on a snippet of the article when we have the whole thing?

image.png.f5831a40289fcb265eba355b12490a75.png

Which to be fair, I wrongly attributed to Smith, but was in fact Allan himself. Now, just to be clear. I am not suggesting it's a "masterstroke" from any one individual, but you did state it had nothing to do with Webber...

image.png.1a1f3fa558097ac16b4a7a615ee1995a.png

Which was the point I was trying to dismiss, mainly because it's untrue, as we can see from the article. In fact, I think it's very clear that they work as a team, which is the entire point of having a sporting director. The sporting director leads the scouting, recruitment etc, with input from other lead sporting roles at the club including Smith and Shakespeare.

Webber isn't just going to turn up to the training ground and unveil Allan Russell to Smith and say, oh, hope you don't mind, you were pretty poor at set pieces last season so I thought you could do with a bit of specialist help...

Yawn. Didn't read.

You mean you did but realised you'd gaffed.

Not sure how you think that response makes me look bad and not you. Oh well.

Still some people out here that think Dean Smith rocks up at Colney on a Monday morning, shocked to find Stuart Webber stood there saying 'This is Allan, he works here now'.

Head coach works with Sporting Director on the vision/ direction of the staff + squad. It has always been thus.
