Current rumour doing the rounds on the grapevine.. If true and we are looking for centrebacks could this be Gibson and or Hanley off?🤔

You'll struggle with any puns for his name so it's a no from me.

We just need another centre-half with the surname Ford, then we'd have a Ford Kipré partnership. 😉

Gotta love a Cedric 🙂

You need four quality centre backs in your squad. You'd guess Zimbo might be on his way, Kabak is off too (thanks for the memories)... that leaves Hanley, Gibbo and Omo. Definitely need one more in there, especially if we plan to use three at the back. Sorensen and Byram could also play adequately in a three, so four good specialist CBs should be enough.

Anyone seen him play much? Can't say I have, although at 6'4" and 25 years old he might be seen as an upgrade on Zimbo.

The former mentioned rather than the latter please. If Norwich could receive half the fee back paid for Gibson it would be some result.

I think this summer could be quite interesting. I know Smith has said no huge changes but they need to handle the transition much better than last summer.

In hindsight keeping Vrancic over loaning in Gilmour may not have been massively different in terms of impact upon results directly, but another player who may have been helpful in the dressing room and would certainly bring decent set piece taking which adds an extra dimension late on in a game.

You could be right, one in - one out, wouldn't be surprised to see any one of Hanley/Gibson/Zimbo go for differing reasons. Hanley could go because of the interest in him and a decision to cash in on him to generate funds for transitioning the squad. Zimbo because he may wish to go somewhere to get more game time. Gibson might be warned he isn't seen as a must start player... Which of them are out of contract the soonest?

Edit: I suppose there is also the question of Byram too. If Smith sees him as more useful at CB, then we could have the other CB in the building, Gibson and Zimbo go, Cedric added to Byram, Hanley and Omobamidele with Tomkins added as 5th choice.

Yup, if I had to choose, I would try to keep Hanley and Omobamidele.

Underwhelming… why the need to fix what isn’t broken (at Championship level). just go with the Hanley/Gibbo partnership until big Andy shows enough to get the nod.

if he’s a cheap Zimbo replacement then fair enough. We’ll need back up and he’s both relatively young and has some decent experience

Motherwell quotes.

The Fir Park faithful were quick to take the youngster to their hearts.

As Stephen Robinson developed his swashbuckling ‘Well side – Kipre fitted right in. Playing at the heart of a no-nonsense defence, Kipre's tough demeanour coupled with confidence on the ball saw him become an iconic figure.

He may only have spent one season in Lanarkshire - but what a time it was. With two runs to Cup Finals, the fans never missed an opportunity to chant their new favourite’s name.

I think that gets said most years by whoever the manager is! It may not be what they think privately, and the time before that we were relegated we brought in eight players for the first-team squad.

Imagine Hanley will be on his way. Smith already stating that Byram is captain material.I know people on here rave about Hanley, but I feel we need an upgrade next season if we are serious about top two/six. We already aware that Hanley and Gibson are not EPL level.

Real question is if we  go 5 at the back in the championship or not.. Omo/Kipre/Byram would be pretty solid 3 centrebacks I suppose

I'm laughing more than crying, laughing at how you are going to handle the disappointment you so desire next season.

Will we see you at the game Sunday? No thought not, you are still irrelevant.

Which is a bit odd in it's own right. Our best defender at CB this season by a country mile is Hanley. If he moves on it will be to a team in the EPL or comparable level to us. Maybe Rangers/Celtic perhaps?

Saying someone is captain material whilst you have the last managers chosen captain in place doesn't mean a lot really. As pointed out at the time, we have three captains - most clubs have at least two, usually a club captain and another.

My thought is that this is what it would likely be - and if you want to go 3-5-2 then it’s sensible to have options.

i get your point and i think this is where the club have to be smart

if we keep the squad we should do well in the champs

but then if we go up we have to replace nearly every position

i personally would build a new midfield maybe one more CB but gel the squad

so IF we go up not so many wholesale changes you can do it in the champs but as we found out hard when you go up

Another factor about CB numbers is if we go to 3 at the back you deffo need more options. I would say certainly 5 CBs. Any less and an injury takes your option off the bench, and you have to play what you have irrespective of form etc.

That’s pretty much what I said….great minds and all that 🙂.

We do also need to remember that whilst he sadly wasn’t a lot of use, we did have Kabak in our ranks this season, so whatever else happens we need a c/b to keep the numbers.

Oh sorry, missed that. 🙂

Yeah, lots of questions to be answered. Would the club sell Gibson a year into a three year contract? Would they sell 30yr old Hanley - arguably our best CB? Would they contemplate losing both?

I genuinely don’t think we would have to replace every position if we went back up. It’s about being smart with the guys you do buy and getting the others to raise their game. Brentford and Leeds have managed this recently with the likes of Ayling or Janelt stepping up after otherwise unremarkable championship seasons.

The likes of Hanley, Pukki, Dimi and maybe even McLean would be fine if they were reinforced with strong players around them. “Give the lads a hand” as Lambert used to say.

where it does get tough is that the game has moved on. We used to be able to pinch the most promising players from the football league like Redmond and Pilkington when we got to the prem but now that’s out of our price bracket. What someone like Bowen would have done for our attack we can only dream of.

Mainly about building a solid spine like Chelsea did for example under Jose with Cech, Terry, Makelele, Lampard, Drogba. They could basically chop and change around those guys.

Connor Goldson from rangers is available on a free in the summer I’d certainly take him. While talking about players from Glasgow I’d happily take Carter-Vickers who’s been on loan at Celtic this year too.
