There's no reasonable way I see us dropping £6m on a position with 2 good players already in the squad.

The only point at which I believe we will open the coffers in any serious way is for absolute distinct upgrades

Can’t see us signing another LB unless Dimi is departing. Byram, Aarons, Mumba, and Sorensen can also all play there

Marty Longstaff has been demoted to U23, probably get him on a free

Interesting one, that. Looked more talented than his older brother when he broke into the Newcastle team, but spent the second half of the season on loan at Mansfield in League Two! There must be a reason he's fallen out of favour so quickly, whether that's form or attitude or what. Not aware of any long-term injuries either, transfermarkt.com only shows a couple of notable injuries in recent years which kept him out for three months and one month.

I think he's more of a tenacious box-to-box player than a creative-type midfielder... interesting shout, though.

Might be a good move for him, could learn a bit, erh, from Darren Moore, erh, although not to, erh, speak fluently! 😀 Their fans still say they are a big club in waiting, probably a bit more chance of them achieving that than the Binners. 🤣

As long as it’s not Toinoven, all Is good 🤣

If we Toivonen had agreed to sign for us when we tried to buy him I think we would have stayed up that season.

Was that the same window as Koulibaly-Gate?

This was an article from February, and the answer to the question of what happened to him is pretty vague.

https://theathletic.com/3117925/2022/02/15/matty-longstaff-from-dream-newcastle-debut-and-20k-a-week-contract-to-fresh-start-in-league-two?source=user-shared-article

The closest you get to a conclusion is:

"The reality for the younger Longstaff is that protracted contract negotiations, fitness problems and a failure to impress have hampered his progress.

During the summer of 2020, the relationship between Longstaff and Newcastle reached a critical point as contract discussions dragged as his deal ran down. There was serious interest from Italian outfit Udinese and their owners, the Pozzo family, who entertained Longstaff on a flight on a private jet in an attempt to woo him, before reportedly tabling a £30,000-a-week offer. Inter Milan, Marseille and a Bundesliga club monitored his situation.

But Lee Charnley, Newcastle’s former managing director, remained quietly confident that Longstaff would opt to stay at the club he grew up supporting. After Bruce intervened and promised Longstaff first-team opportunities, the young midfielder first agreed a short extension to stay during Project Restart, before eventually signing a new two-year, £20,000-a-week deal, but only after technically becoming a free agent for a fortnight.

This contract represented an eye-watering rise from his £850-a-week deal, his first professional contract.

Fan sentiment towards the midfielder played a significant part in Newcastle paying significantly more for a player of his experience than they would have typically done so.

Since then, struggles for fitness and favour have forced Longstaff on loan in search of game time, after just 20 appearances for Newcastle."

Thanks for that. I reckon he'd be worth a punt!

No, this was the summer of 2013. Koulibalygate was the summer of 2015.

Nick Ma****er on twitter has just said that it is accurate that we are interested in the Brazilian, but as a loan signing

Makes sense, another loan to buy if promoted suits us if they go for it.

Yep. We wanted a 24 year old Toby Alderweireld and a 26 year old Toivonen on permanent deals but ended up with a 32 year old Elmander and 33 year old Joseph Yobo, both on loan.

Michael Bailey's article on the Athletic claims he's been injured and returned to running recently. Says he would be back in action "next month". Not exactly ideal.

Yep, as per Connor:

"The midfielder has been absent from the first-team since April through injury however, with an August return expected."

Hmm 🤔 been here before (Normann)?
