......and Smith must score.

Games where we've been the better team over 90 mins

Recommended Posts

Travelling down to Brighton yesterday we were trying to think of games where we've looked a reasonable team over the whole 90 mins. We could think of only three :

Watford win away is probably the standout, albeit against ten men in part.

Everton win at home.

Man Utd loss at home

Yes, we've had decent 45's but been under the cosh for the other half. Our other two wins were fortunate and we've failed to win any of our ' six pointers ' stretching right back to Watford at home in September.

Anyone want to add to the list ?

Brentford away and I’m still thinking.

I think it's a skewed reality that we as a fanbase are convinced of (off the back of such dominant Championship campaigns) that we should look dominant for 90 minutes in most games at this level.

The actually reality is that there is an ebb and flow to all matches- wins included. Brighton H, Wolves H, Newcastle A, Man United H, Palace H, Leeds H are all games where we may not have been the totally dominant side but easily could've/ should've taken more points from, save for individual error or poor chance conversion. Even Smith's first win Southampton H we weren't really the better side for the majority.

Fact of the matter is, results at this level will usually come down to a couple of key pivotal moments in games- and we've fluffed our lines on them far too often.

Yes, Brighton at home wasn't too bad. Shame we can't say the same about yesterday.

I forgot Wolves too.

Yeah. A bit alarming that we looked much better under Farke vs a much better looking Brighton  than we did against the pretty poor version we played yesterday.

I'd be happy if we could be the better team for 9 minutes.

Well our position in the league illustrates this. And we can talk about luck, bad luck and bad refs but they would be excuses not reasons.

I don’t think we were better across 90 mins other than the result. They absolutely battered us and game could have easily been a draw or loss.

So many of these threads just end up like feeding time at the zoo. Is there room at the trough for me yet?🙃

Compare this to the much-maligned 19/20 season. Home games against Newcastle, Man City, Chelsea, Leicester, Spurs - all better performances than anything we have come up with this season. The Cup game at Spurs.

Yes, we were six points adrift at the time of the Covid break, and yes, we were utterly woeful after that, but we occasionally reached levels that we are totally incapable of this season because the squad is worse and also the spirit has gone.

Leicester at home? Thought we battled at least.

I'd add Brighton and Wolves at home.

That's it.

The Newcastle and Brentford away games we couldn't dominate a team down to ten for most of the match and we were hanging on for dear life at Brentford 2nd half

Your memory is playing tricks on you - Brentford didn't have a man sent off in the game we won at their place.

I was going to say this. We actually had a lot more chances too. Their first goal was against the run of play. Had we been more clinical most folks agree that we could have been 2-3 up at half time.
