I see Russell Martin had a good day today..

Recommended Posts

Future manager material or no? And no I don't mean right now or next season I'm happy with Dean, hence why I said 'future' just to clear that up..

And on a different note rather amusingly is that the Swansea fans seem to be in a little civil war right now about their fans taking  Union flags to matches and if they are Welsh or British.. There I was thinking it was both, who knew 😉

If he hadn’t of played for us, you wouldn’t want him anywhere near the club with this record. Why do former players suddenly get bumped up the estimations?

Spot on.

There is no chance in hell that you'd be looking at Swansea, near the bottom of the Championship, and Russell Martin and going, "Hmm I think we should make a move for the Swansea manager" if he hadn't ever played for us.

Besides, I don't want him anywhere near the club, future or not. Would just be another yes man for the board and would be ideal for their cosy "jobs for the boys" attitude.

Doesn't stop it happening with Robins, though...

Personally, I'd rather have Martin, as he seems a better fit in the way he operates, which is very Farke-esque.

Wales has had quite a strong independence movement for a while now. Since Brexit ended the grants Wales used to get from the EU and benefit from, they now have less money as a nation. As you can imagine, this has only fuelled those wanting more control or even independence.

Leaving the UK and becoming indepedant would harm Wales 1000 times more than us leaving the EU ever could, but let's not turn this into a off topic thread. I understand where they are coming from but leaving the UK altogether and thus ending a 400 year old union just in the hopes of getting slightly more control and ignoring the very serious and extreme costs that would involve is like taking a sledgehammer to take a nail off of the wall. Does Wales need and deserve more control and should be granted much more laws, rights and say in it's country? Well, of course. I agree with that. But breaking the union, all it represents and all the money, the GDP the GBP and all the perks that being in the UK give them? Well, like I said.. You think Brexit's bad wait until the new peoples republic of Wales ends up with an economy about as strong, rich and powerful as Zanzibar and Samoa..

Funny thing is, same argument can be made for leaving most Unions.

I don't disagree with you either. That'll be the source of the animosity towards the Union Jack though. Which is what you asked. 🙂

Yep, agreed.

And I'm not really up to date with Swansea squad / expectations...are they seriously underperforming?

If anything they are slightly over performing. Over the last couple of seasons they have significantly cut costs and offloaded a lot of players (net profit on transfers of c.£15m) with the owners and the fans being at loggerheads. They had no realistic chance of threatening the play offs this season and some were expecting a relegation battle, the fact they are now talking about only needing a couple of players to go for the playoffs next year shows that he has done a good job with the resources he has available once he got them playing his way...

No as long as it’s on merit. Robins has performed very well in the last few years especially.

Swansea sound a little like what we might become if we don't get into the playoffs next season..

Thanks, that was the impression I had but without looking into it I didn't want to give Martin unnecessary credit.

Sounds like he's doing a good job whilst playing good football. Wouldn't be surprised to see him managing us at some point in the next 5 years.

Hugill also played, but on the other side and looked absolutely woeful at Championship level. Yet again, our recruitment proving a success

You could make a case for Robins for manager even without his tenure as a player here.

Martin? Not so much.

Robins has done well at Coventry, but I don't think he's shown enough to be poached by a lower-end Premier League team. Nor has Martin, admittedly, but in the mid/long-term future there's more chance of a Premier League or top Championship team taking a punt on Martin.

I'm pretty confident that in five-ten years time, Martin will be coaching at a higher level than Robins.

Coventry are surviving paying £11/12m in wages this season. Robins is head and shoulders above Martin in managerial success and would be a fantastic fit here.

Noticed The Jack had 3 ex Norwich in the team today. Great day, made history, what football is all about.

I'd be happy to, but there's no way either of us will remember this in five years so there's not really much point.

Robins has been managing for 15 years whereas Martin has been doing so for less than two-and-a-half years, so of course Robins has had more success so far. Martin for me has a higher ceiling though.

I'd much rather have the guy who took over from him at MK Dons this season. Liam Manning. 79 points from 40 games is an excellent return, that's despite losing their best player O'Riley in January to Celtic.

Born in Norwich, spent 3 years in the academy here too

Agreed. Interesting no genuine promotion contending Championship club has taken a real punt on Robins in his 15 years.

It looks like Martin might get that opportunity in the next 2 or 3 years.
