AJ 1,218 Posted December 28, 2021 Mathematically, yes we can. Realistically? No, only a divine miracle can save us as I can't see us doing much business in the transfer window

alex_ncfc 643 Posted December 28, 2021 There is absolutely no way in the world that we can stay up 😂 even though it's of course possible, it's also not going to happen: we have shown now in two consecutive Premier League campaigns that we are one of, if not the worst teams to ever play at this level. That's the reality, it really is that embarrassing and simple.
Petriix 2,821 Posted December 28, 2021 No chance we'll get to 36 points. I'd be surprised if we got much beyond half that total. I also sincerely doubt that 36 points would actually be enough for 17th place (remember, we'd need to exceed the points of the team who actually do finsh 17th in order to claim that spot). Dean Coneys boots 1,382 Posted December 28, 2021 I honestly think we will beat Derby’s record and that saddens me. But there are no goals in this team - even when they play well.

Capt. Pants 4,089 Posted December 28, 2021 It's a must not lose game today, but win it and West Ham beat Watford then we still have a chance. Reverse that and we are 6 points behind 17th having 'played' a game more and a laughable goal difference.

With him in charge I felt there was always a chance, however bleak it looked at any particular time. Smith may be an ok manager, but Farke was a special talent imo and even though he had faults, overall we were better with him than without him.

percy varco 196 Posted December 28, 2021 No. Gerrard has motivated Smiths players at Villa. Smith has not done the same with Farkes players here. can’t see Smith getting us promoted either. I have run out of making allowances for him.

Only once in the last 7 seasons has 36 points not been enough to stay up, and in the other 6, 35 points would have been enough-last season, 29 points would have been enough. I think this season is quite similar to last season, with a bigger gap growing between the very poor teams and the ones that have enough to survive, and I can see 30 points being enough to stay up. I can’t see us getting there though ☹️

Getting back all the players that have been out will make a huge difference, the general play but especially the defending, was a lot better in some of Smith’s earlier games. Few PL teams can lose the number of first team players we have and not suffer badly. Have we had worse injuries than others? I have looked at the injuries list a number of times this season and we have been just above average. COVID is obviously not counted but according to premiership rules we must have had enough players available if not we would have cancelled our games. With COVID it is possibly better for the whole team to have it at once so you can get your games cancelled rather than a few at a time. Back to injuries, I sadly don't think we have many premiership quality/ready players. With this all it needs is a couple of them to get injured and we are left so short. I sound like a broken drum but we signed a lot of players who were not ready or experienced for the premier League. Thank god Pukki has stayed fit. Without him we would have scored even less goals than we have as I don't see anyone else scoring.

Like almost all managers I think he simply reached his ' best before ' date. Whether Smith has enough about him for what increasingly looks like will be a promotion attempt next season remains to be seen.

You are seeing other teams with players missing but they are not having to play players like Byram who had been out for 2 years, or Gilmour with a 39 degree temp. It’s more squad depth, other teams might be able to afford 6/7 first team players out, Norwich can’t. I can see what Smith meant after the Villa game in saying they could have pushed to have it postponed, it might be the difference between saying the likes of Byram, Gilmour and Giannoulis (who was Ill but on the bench etc) aren’t available and that we couldn’t field a team, I think they should have done that if it was an option tbh. Last season it was 39 points. 36 points would only have guaranteed survival once in the past decade, and it would have come down to goal difference on another three occasions. But the bottom 5 do have a very low points total at the near half way stage. I’ve no idea what the average points is normally at this stage, but this is gonna be a low points bottom 5, more then ever before. Still think 36 is safety…..for two of the bottom five.
