Did we really need a £5m backup keeper...

Recommended Posts

With respect, I feel like this is the least of our problems.

The biggest question for me is, why on earth did Webber and Farke not adequately replace Skipp and Tettey and in what realm were they thinking that a forward line of Pukki, Sargent and Idah was strong enough to deliver what is needed in this league.

Albeit with the benefit of hindsight but the word madness springs to mind.

1) Any injury to Krul and yes absolutly

2) Krul will play better with proper competition.

So yes, in our position GK will be a crucial position.

£5m isn't much by Premier League standards.

The goalkeeper is such an important position, you need decent backup. We all remember what happened when Bryan Gunn got seriously injured.

Well we spent an awful lot more on an incapable striker.

Not sure of your point tbh. The money spent isn't the issue; the quality, or lack of, most definitely is.

Surely £5m would have been better off being added to the budget to bring in somebody better than Sargent. That's my point.

How on earth was £5m rising to £10m on Gunn considered a priority this season,

Well that is the problem I'm identifying isn't it?

With a limited budget, and no money left for January, how can spending £5m rising to £10m on a bench warming keeper have been considered an appropriate use of resources?

We could have just signed Wayne Hennessey or Jamal Blackman on a free transfer to stick on the bench.

Should be pittance to a prem club, but here we are, grasping at every penny ans bemoaning a sponsorship loss.
Honestly, Delia needs to find a suitable buyer soon, or we are going to get stuck in the championship.

Its hard to take a lot of these needy threads seriously but yes, 5 million on a backup keeper is good business if your number one has a long injury. Good grief it hurts to have to write something so obvious.

Maybe Farke and Webber thought Gunn might be able to play up front in a similar way they thought Hugill, Sergent, Idah and Tzollis might.

Kiss enough frogs you find a prince eventually, unfortunately these frogs have wasted a lot of club money.

Let's be honest, Gunn couldn't possibly be worse up front 🤷‍♂️

Definitely worth a try, do you think Sergent, Tzollis and Idah might then realise how useless they are

No we didn't.

We also didn't need to sign Gunn for sentimental reasons.

Gunn also isn't "PL class"

Krul is clearly number one and McGovern did very well when called upon for 10 or so games last season - in fact he far exceeded my expectations and his performances surprised me. We also have young keepers waiting in the wings.

So yeah it was a waste of money.

At this point that is worth a try, Stuart Pearce would have given it a go.

Like Adam Armstrong for example 🤪

No he didn’t, we were all papping ourselves. Going into this season with out a decent number 2 keeper would’ve caused bedlam on here and 5m for any player in the prem isn’t much and doesn’t buy you much in this league as we well know!

So, no, not a waste of money for my money. Sargent, Tzolis, PLM and possibly others is where we wasted money.

It's his attention to detail that impressed me most Buh.😉👍😇

I can just imagine him watching the game yesterday, watching Josh Sargent nutmeg himself in front of goal, and clenching his fist and muttering “f&££ing Angus Gunn…”

A lot of people seem to be missing the OP's point; 'Would it have been better to use 5 million to add to the striker budget?'
