Arsenal Villa

Recommended Posts

Thought this would be a thread about the game, not running on about buendia and how out of his depth he is, how we don't feel sorry for him blah blah blah. Jesus can't we sell a player, buy new players ourselves and move on. Christ

Arsenal looked very good, certainly better than when we played them.

Villa, very pedestrian

Grealish as big a loss to them as Buendia was to us.

When the Villa defender pulled back his leg to strike the ball he had a clear strike at it. From the side Lacazet deliberately placed his foot between the ball and the swinging foot. He had no intention of playing the ball, he was simply putting his foot in a position where the Villa defender couldn't avoid kicking it. I'd hoped that VAR would stop that sort of thing but it hasn't. Last night was the best example of why someone like Grant Holt should be sitting with the VAR official.

Putting your body between the ball and an opposition player is how you are taught to play. Sorry, but this is a really daft reflection. Of course he is going to try and prevent an opposing player from kicking it. Just like Holt turning so he could better shield the ball and often having his ankles clipped in the process.

It's a really important part of the game as sometimes, the best scenario for you as a player is to try and draw the foul. If you can no longer do that, you may as well pick up the ball and introduce scrums...

Thanks for the 'daft' comment. Try reading what I wrote again. He didn't put his body between the player and the ball. He put his foot where he knew the defender wouldn't be able to avoid kicking it. He made absolutely no effort to play the ball.

That's the point though. That is part and parcel of football. When I said "body" it doesn't mean you have to put your entire body in the way. Controlling the ball is everything, that includes preventing other players from gaining control. If you are in control of the ball then you protect it. Whether that be by using your body, putting your foot in the way.

Honestly, you need to read it back a few more times, it really doesn't read great. If you have the ball and a player comes in to get it off you, you don't have to play the ball, you can wait for them to make a move and either draw a foul or use the direction and momentum they have committed to go a different direction and lose them.

The is absolutely nothing wrong with any of that.

Have you actually seen the incident? Lacazete did not have control of the ball and made no attempt to play the ball

Yup. It's exactly what I said it was. Classic centre forward play, goes to put his body between the ball and the player, gets there first, player contacts the attacker before the ball - foul. Plenty like that won by the likes of Holt, Hoolahan, Cantwell, Pukki, Jerome etc over the years.

You go to ground in the penalty area, you have to make contact with the ball first if not, you are inviting that call to be made. Clever centre forward play by Lacazette. Foul outside of the box every day of the week so is inside it.
