lake district canary 4,820 Posted September 27, 2021 Kane gets kicked in the penalty area, looks for penalty by going down, no penalty. Everton player gets kicked, looks for penalty by going down, penalty. VAR is just another level of incompetence by officialdom. .
canarydan23 4,758 Posted September 27, 2021 I've said it before, VAR was necessary because the majority of referees were incompetent. All they've done is given a tool to incompetent referees. I'm crap at painting. That won't change if you give me a £500 set of watercolours and paintbrushes. VAR needs to be independent of the clowns that made it necessary. But that involves relinquishing the power to influence the game, so it won't happen.

VAR should be judged by former players. Have to be careful that they don't get to officiate former clubs etc. But it feels like a decent way of allowing more former pros to stay in the game, an alternative to coaching. Level 1 and Level 2 VAR badges at St Georges Park, then get them to make the VAR calls. Plenty of former League 1 and League 2 players would jump at the chance of doing that for £40k a year you would think! Plenty of former League 1 and League 2 players would jump at the chance of doing that for £40k a year you would think! Exactly. Get three of them to officiate each game and in binary decisions the majority outcome is the ruling on the pitch. That way it's not down to an individual's subjective interpretation. I suspect if you took three ex-pros and got them to rule on the Everton penalty and the Tottenham non-penalty, you'd have got the same outcome (either both a penalty, both not) and likewise with this obstructing player offside rule. No way would a system like this disallow ours v Leicester, allow Arsenal v ours, disallow the Leicester goals v Brighton and allow the Aston Villa goal v Man Utd. Ridiculously inconsistent and almost every time comes down to the interpretation of an incompetent individual.
AJ 1,358 Posted September 27, 2021 Offsides aside, I think the issue with VAR is that despite its very existence to remove human error, it still relies on a subjective human opinion. At least in this particular example, the referee did go and watch it and then made a decision. There's been some examples where VAR have overturned a refs decision when it hasn't been clearly and obviously wrong, which is not right for me.
First Wazzock 1,010 Posted September 27, 2021 Nothing has changed. Before VAR we were relying on the opinion of one man - The Referee Now with VAR we are relying on the opinion of several referees. VAR has not stopped diving, or looking for a decision, But it has stopped Referees looking closely at the game and making a decision for themselves. Why worry when someone miles away can do it for you, and still not get it right. We are not better off with VAR it has changed nothing at all
Jim Smith 2,604 Posted September 27, 2021 Is there any footage anywhere in the world of our penalty shout v Watford (foul on Rashica) or has it all been wiped from existence?
