I cannot ever recall a professional football team as bad

Recommended Posts

Worst ever is clearly hyperbolic but I don't think I've seen a Norwich team look so out of their depth at the level they are playing at. It is somewhat embarrassing that despite everything, defensively we look entirely unprepared. If you'd told me on Saturday that we were a League One team in a cup tie v Watford I would have believed you.

I think they are marking zonally from open play as well as set pieces. I just don’t get it.

That's the point. I see ppl moan about zonal marking everything we conceded and I tell them zonal marking only applies at set pieces, but we really do defend like we are zonal.marking in open play.

Pukki would score 30 against our defending.

"The Turkish lad".

He has a five letter palindrome for a name. Surely is not that hard?

Farke is fighting fires at the moment. Too many new faces. Too many inexperienced players. Shape and system not working as a result of the previous two and morale is now likely to become a factor. Too much for one coach to sort out and we don't seem to have players capable of taking the lead on the pitch. Our more experienced players are more of the quiet variety other than Krul - Hanley isn't a shouter, neither is Pukki.

I was embarrassed for Gibson last night. His game is not taking the ball under pressure on his own byline with nowhere to go, yet we continued to do it and Gunn didn't look at the situation and think 'this is better getting launched'. As a simplistic example that was a scenario that Krul would perhaps have prevented. Decision making comes from players too.

NA had four (or possibly five) games in the PL. Herr Farke has had 43!! Bit of a difference one might suggest?

John Barnes on Sky saying he has never seen zonal marking done the way we do it. The image is just before their first goal, no one is responsible to pick up the Liverpool scorer

That's our entire team in the box (Seriously, count them) vs 4 Liverpool players.  And still a known talent goes unmarked.

The basics of Zonal marking are that the very back 5 between them, also have the wide positions covered, we line up zonal yet when the ball comes it becomes a man-to-man panic lottery.  It's so disorganised I'm sick of it.

Don't care what top teams in Europe play it, we're no good at it so should be rectified.  We can't change our players, so the only fix is a tactical one or change up in the backroom staff to bring in someone who can work on organising this and getting stuck into players who fail to perform in that role.

When you see this, it's quite amazing to me that Tzolis is the one who won't play another minute if he decides he's capable of tucking home a penalty mid-game.  Are there not worse crimes in the defensive instructions not being adhered to?  Or is it just a mess from the top?

Too many questions, damn.

Come back Charlie Billington, it seems like all is forgiven.

We’ve been putting the whole team in the box for corners for a while (sometimes all in the 6 yard box) and in my view they get in each other’s way and it causes confusion leading to frequent bouts of pinball in our box. Have a couple of players marking zonally if we want but the others should be tracking runners and one or two just need to get out of the way.

When we've conceded a corner.....Leave a city player with pace up around our half of the centre circle....That's then likely 2 opposition players are occupied and taken away from our 18 yard box....Our big players then marking their big players and the rest picking and making it more difficult for the other team to run in and attack the ball....."He's your man, your responsibility and not that bloody square piece  o' turf as it's not gonna leap like a young salmon and head the ball towards our goal"....

Basics....bleedin' basics..... 😉

Exactly! We rarely make the opposition fear what's coming back as part of our defensive tactics.

Too many times already this season we've had the opposition centerback's stood on the halfway line triggering off attacks.  And even then we were standing off them.

100% - why, why, why do we never ever do this?

The Grant-Roeder era is undeniably the worst in our recent history. If you can't remember how utterly dire that was you have very selective memory. And that was languishing at the bottom of the championship.

Webber should  act and get in a defensive coach.....if that sidelines Farke well so be it.

Do you mean a new coach who has a defensive style. Or do you mean a coach is bought in to work on just defending in training?

Not sure you read the post. The question is can you remember a side this bad at defending/marking etc. I don't think I can remember a norwich side this certain of conceding goals so easily.

Make the defenders have 2 tins of branded baked beans for the pre match meal. The power of flatulence could put Everton players off when we defend set pieces.

A coach to work on defending would be my preferred option. However, this only works if Farke takes a back seat on defensive tactics and I don't think his ego will allow that. He seems pretty stubborn to me but the defensive problems and individual mistakes have been there throughout Farke's reign.

You have a short memory. Some of the players we saw in the 90's and 2000's were almost amateur. The squad quality today is good, It needs to come together as a team and quickly.

So we don’t have a defence coach?

Really?

I'm not sure if that's a thing is it. Think you have a specialist goal keeping coach and then first team coaches. Doubt you would you have a coach for each department.

Well we clearly need one. Perhaps we should replace the Soccerbot with a defensive coach.
