Norwich Pubs

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, Brighton fan here.

Going to make a long weekend of our game on the 16th October, luckily Sky & BT have decided it is a boring game and let it KO at 3pm!.

I understand the town has lots of real ale and micro pubs for me to visit and tick off some beers. Can anyone recommend an area to stay. Looking for a basic Premier Inn hotel, within walking or taxi to the ground.

Thanks a lot and happy to do the same in return.

There is a Travel lodge next door to the bus station- very basic but very central, easy to get around. Not much in the City isn't within walking distance of the ground too, you can get there in about 15/20 from the hotel depending on speed. Alternatively you could book the Premier Inn that is literally built into Carrow Road.

The big 'Real Ale' place is the Fat Cat but I'd also recommend the Redwell Brewing taproom for some crafty stuff. Will leave others to recommend more.

Hi @BHA Fan

The city (not town, there's one of those about 40 miles to the south) has plenty of good pubs and restaurants.

There's a Premier Inn right opposite the station, and that is about a ten minute walk to Carrow Road.  As for pubs, I'll just list a few that have decent beer and/or make their own - if you pop them into your mapping application of choice you should be able to form a decent itinerary.  As far as I'm aware those listed here are all ok with away fans too, so long as you're not too rowdy.

  • The Adam and Eve
  • The Coach and Horses (Thorpe Road)
  • The Coach and Horses (Bethel Street)
  • The Fat Cat
  • The Brewery Tap
  • The Fat Cat and Canary (not one for match day)
  • The Ribs of Beef
  • The Murderers (must show proof of covid vaccination status)
  • The Wig and Pen
  • The Rumsey Wells
  • The White Lion
  • The Garnet
  • The Plough
  • The Last Pub Standing

There are plenty more though - especially slightly further out of the centre.

Enjoy your visit to the Fine City (excluding the football, of course 😉) .

Heh guys, thanks already. Should have mentioned driving up and an oap so nothing rowdy with loud music.

Forgot about the hotel next to the ground, if I remember it has rooms overlooking the pitch. But £250 so that's that done with!

#BananaBoy Going to go through that list and check them all out. Thanks.

I wouldn't bother with Redwell. Beers aren't much cop, not even in my top 10 Norfolk brewers.

Coach and horses is home to Chalk Hill which are pretty good.

Banana boy's list covers many great pubs.

If you're up for driving (perhaps on the way home) stopping at: Ampersand tap room in Diss; Duration brewery in West Acre; or Starwing in Redgrave is recommended.

Lollard's Pit isn't bad. Plenty of tables inside and outside and no loud music. I recommend booking a table ahead of time as you have an OAP in your party and will need a seat.

There are plenty of guest houses along Riverside as well.

Some good uns there. Will add if in the are of the Fat Cat Brewery Tap, which is one of the best pubs in the city, you also have The Artichoke, The Leopard, The Plasterers and The Kings Head all within about a 10 minute walk of each other. All excellent pubs with so many good beers.

And if you're on the southern side, a little crawl:

The Champion

The Coachmakers (St Stephens)

The Trafford

The Kings Arms (Hall Rd)

The Freemasons Arms

If you've an OAP in tow, I would recommend the Trafford and the Kings Arms from that lot - both busy, a good mix of ages and safe for away fans. To be honest. most real ale pubs will be safe. Avoid riverside.

Again, thanks guys. I say OAP, it's me and I'm not that old. I mentioned it as a guide to avoiding 'music' and 'Sky/BT' pubs. Prefer a real pub with real beer.

northstandchat.co.uk usually asks about pre-match drinking and also a few plan weekends away. Once I've gone through the list I'll post it here and on our site.

I quite enjoyed my couple of trips there but each to their own.

Who would be in your Norfolk top 10 out of interest? I'd love to explore more breweries in the area.

Brewery Tap will be ideal for you! It's my local and they are the best pub around! Honourable mentions for The Arti, Fat Cat and Canary and Wig and Pen.. plus shout outs to Coach and Horses for a good away day experience. Although it's always rammed so perhaps not ideal.

No, The B Tap is the one. They don't have any TVs and are not really interested in footie (well showing it at the pub at least) But they do have some cracking beers and all ages are welcomed!

Oh Boy. This could well turn into a week long crawl. Starting mapping out a route and a central hotel and oh boy

AVERAGE £3.50 A PINT

No wonder people say Brightons £5/£6 pint is expensive.

Does look a superb 'local' but also looks a bit out of town.

If you're in the centre the Belgian monk is always good for a continental tipple. They have a big selection of Belgian beers and great food

Try Marlborough Guest House for somewhere to stay.... good hosts, location, reasonable price.   Clean and tidy...

The Norwich Hotel is close to the Marlborough, and a decent place to stay, with a fair-sized car park, which might be a factor. Probably a six or seven minute walk downhill to the ground.

It's the 6 or 7 minute walk uphill I'm worried about. I'm not as fit as I was 40 years ago!

Guys, it's been an absolute pleasure chatting and I'll send my route before arriving and a report on the beers on my return to the coast, 3 points in the bag I hope.

Yes, the beer prices in Norwich are fairly reasonable compared to Brighton The car parking charges certainly are.... I've paid twenty quid down there.

I don't think I've seen the Red Lion on Bishopsgate mentioned. It's a few mins along Riverside Rd ( not to be confused with Riverside ). The landlord who runs the Trafford Arms has recently taken it on. They do very decent real ales and good food. There's a paved garden at the front and one at the back overlooking the river. Can get busy before games but decent crowd in there. Might be one to try after the game.

It's next to the oldest bridge in Norwich, Bishops Bridge built in 1340, and it's said Queen Elizabeth crossed it during a visit to Norwich in 1578. Norwich's oldest pub the Adam and Eve is also in Bishopsgate and well worth a visit too.

Enjoy the socialising but I hope the match turns out to be pointless.

Well there seems to be a bit of a kerfuffle over tickets for this fixture.

https://www.northstandchat.com/showthread.php?390225-Norwich-tickets

There's a lot there so don't bother reading it all, but to sum up, we should have got the usual 2669 tickets for this match but have less than 2000. Many people, like myself, had planned a weekend away in your lovely city but cannot now get tickets for their other half. Our 'loyalty points' system works on having a season ticket and then points for going to away games. This is biased in a way to people like myself who goes to most away games but then we can't get a second ticket.

Anyway, I diverse. Thoughts please on why we only got 2000 tickets for a game we could have sold out easily.

Sounds like youre in the clubs elite band, but that's detrimental to others not soo privileged in wanting tickets.

Seriously, isn't it up to the visiting club how many tickets they buy (up to the max) as they have to pay for them, irrespective of sales?

Don't the away club have an option to purchase so many and then take more , up to the 10% limit or take all 10% and return some x weeks before KO. It just looks strange that BHA only took the 2000 from day one. Looking at the Norwich site you were selling the tickets that we should have had so there was obviously no option for us to get any more.

As for 'elite'. This comes up a lot regarding loyalty points. Brentford recently and a new ground. Many wanted tickets but there were only 1700 available and so only those who go to most away games got a ticket. But that also gave them another 15 points meaning they can now get a ticket for Norwich and another 15 points. So those with get more and those without go further down the scale.

There are a couple of options for cheapish hotels like Travelodge and Premier Inn.

There is a Travelodge just off Prince of Wales Road on Vedast Street. That's very central and a ten minute walk from the ground. I would normally say it could be a bit noisy due to the location being close to the night life area but I'm not sure that has returned to pre pandemic levels yet so could be ok.

There is a Premier Inn wise you have a choice of two. The first is the Nelson which is a couple of minutes walk from the Travelodge above, but is literally on the riverfront. Again, this means ten mins walk to the ground and you'd have Riverside at your disposal whilst being close to the Coach and Horses - one of the pubs with a brewery attached that many have mentioned already.

There is also a Premier Inn on Duke Street, which is further away, but perhaps set in a quieter location. It's further away from the ground but closer to other parts of the city. I would say you'd be about 20-25mins walk from the ground there. But that isn't an issue as such if you plan to get up and explore the city and visit a few pubs before the game as you can plan a route past them and break your journey up that way. It's 10mins walk to the city market, for example, and a couple of minutes walk from St Andrews Hall and Elm Hill and a couple of pubs situated nearby there. I would have a gander through Elm Hill, well worth it to get a picture of oldy worldy Norwich. Again, Elm Hill brings you out close to Tombland and on Magdalen Street within a minutes walk from the likes of the Ribs of Beef etc.
