Dan Ashworth - The obvious Webber successor?

Recommended Posts

If Webber were to decide he fancied a change, or a job in Germany or something, then Ashworth would be the obvious successor surely?

For those who don't know he was the technical director for West Brom between 2007 and 2012, during which time they finished yo-yo'ing and managed to establish themselves in the Prem, with their bargain bucket recruitment to thank for that.

Then did a few years with England were he is credited with driving the success that we are seeing today.

Since 2018 has been Technical Director at Brighton, where they have developed and sold Ben White for £52m, and Sanchez, Lamptey, Connolly have all broken into their first team, and players like Trossard, Maupey, Burn, McAllister have all made the grade.

If anybody is wondering why he would be the 'obvious' successor, other than his great CV, well 50 year old Ashworth from the local area and came through the Norwich academy! (but didn't make the grade as a pro).

Plus it would annoy that Brighton idiot we get on here.

My calculations suggest that he would have been in the same U18 team as Lee Power, Robert Ullathorne, Daryl Sutch, David Smith. Adrian Pennock and Jason Minett, but is slightly (a year or two) too young for Dion Dublin and a year or two too old for Chris Sutton.

As an side, how on earth is Dion Dublin now FIFTY TWO years old? Feels like a few years ago he was playing for us. Life is short!

Interesting Idea.

Webber and Farke = Dan Asworth and Paul Warne?

Well I posted this back in November, looks like any chance of this ever happening will be gone now that Ashcroft will have billions to play with.

What an epic rise for this former Norwich youth player!

But should Brighton fans be questioning today whether Ashworth knew that this potential move was on the cards when flogging Dan Burn to Newcastle?

He was probably always beyond us- his reputation with England always meant a bigger job was on the cards.

The worrying sign for me is that Newcastle are being sensible in their strategy. Rather than spaffing money on big names they've recruited with some common sense and they are putting a savvy operator like Ashworth in charge.

Agreed on your point there. I was hoping it would be one of those crazy turns that lasts a few seasons, doesn’t go anywhere and then the big money pulls out. This does look they’re planning diligently. I still think the whole thing is farcical, which goes to show the nature of this league. Give me a few more years when the black and white iron fist has squeezed the joy out of the league (not too dissimilar to Man City now) i and would have probably lost all interest in “Premier League” football by then anyway.

If he did they should be thanking him for getting 13million for an overrated player worth nowhere near that 🤷‍♂️

Tripper, Target and Burn are really solid signings, you can think they over paid for Burn, but those three should give them a solid experienced base to build on for 2 to 3 years, if they stay up or go down they are all solid professionals more reliable than Murphy, Lewis, and Clarke - I thought they were well considered purchases.

Newcastle are always going to have to overpay as everybody knows they've got more money than pretty much anyone so its difficult to judge the fees.

Totally agree though that players like Trippier, Targett, Burn and also Wood are the kind you'd think won't down tools in the Championship.
