Did we commit too soon?

Recommended Posts

Giannoulis is not as good at defending as he is at attacking - there is no argument there. Against pace and movement of wingers he is weak. I disagreed with many on here about his performance against Liverpool - he was partially culpable for two of the goals because his positioning was dreadful. He also needs to improve his one on one skills if he is to be first choice at this level.

Gibson, on the other hand, has been exposed by the lack of cover. He is a solid defender who had a rough first 15 minutes against Leicester but thereafter was good. I'm confident he will get up to speed as his fitness improves.

Both, though, need their teammates to do their jobs - which is something which hasn't happened yet. Rashica, Gilmore and Williams all failed to do what they were supposed to. It's easy to see the last error as the one responsible, but every goal conceded is usually a series of errors by different players.

It's a squad game. The squad is strong enough to stay up.

Good lord! Why is that the same people on this site are so desperate to find something for which to criticise the club. This has been a bloody fantastic transfer window so why can't you find it within yourself to give the club the credit it deserves?

You might want to find some on my posts Re-this window before you start yapping.

More like people writing them off too early

Problem is, Farke makes his mind up quickly and once made, is hard to change. I wouldn't be at all surprised to not see Dimi in a Norwich shirt for a while, and possibly only once injuries occur. I hope I'm wrong, I like Dimi. With him and Williams you have two different full backs for different occasions. Burnley at home for example, I'd very much like to see Dimi in.

Farke doesn't change a winning team, or one he deems performing well. I think with the perceived quality in depth now available, he needs to show more flexibility and adjust personal and tactics depending on opposition.

It was you who started this negative thread, because you always have to find something bad to say about the club. In this case it's patently absurd. Giannoulis and Gibson are both quality players who played a very important part in achieving promotion. A condition of them coming to a championship side was that we had an obligation to buy them if we achieved that promotion. We did, and fulfilled that contractual obligation; hence the absurdity of your question.

I get we need cover, but since when have we spent £7M and £8M on players for cover?

BW will get so game time for sure, I can't see MUFC letting him without that assurance.

And it seems well known we're looking for another CB.

Had we not of committed to the obligation to buy, we'd have had an extra £15M to spend elsewhere, albeit we'd need a cover LB.

With the greatest of respect, Chris, I’m not sure I really understand buddy. How did we waste £15mil? Apart from the fact that they might both have decent seasons for us anyway, we needed to spend in this area of the pitch just as much as others. They wouldn’t have come to us and played their part, getting us promoted in the process, if there was no obligation to buy. We are assembling a squad that’s designed to compete, and I would imagine at this stage Farke is telling everyone in the squad that every place is up for grabs. Time doesn’t stand still - we bought players to upgrade the squad at the time and are simply continuing to do that, surely that’s the whole point, no?

I'm not sure that at any point I've used the word 'waste' Alex.

I'm just questioning whether with hindsight, we'd be better with the cash in our hand.

Rather than committing to two players who may now spend vast amount of time on the bench.

It's what's called squad depth...can you grasp that? Ffs if we didn't have them there'd be plenty whinging that we didn't  have depth. I strongly suspect  that you'd be one of them. As our squad improves  , so does the quality  ....and therefore value , of our bench. Would you really be happy with Zimbo , Andy O and a cheapy...so we had money left over.....that go up like a lead balloon.

I will respond no more as you are either a bit thick or just a WUM.

Depth. Let's put it this way, a common complaint of ours last season - or indeed a reason why many appeared to sh!t their kecks on a regular basis was the absence of Buendia from the team. A fair few of us thought selling him would finance an overhaul for greater depth across the team instead of a major part of the team's creativity stemming from a single player.

Chuck in our previous season in the Premier League where we had three centre-halves out at once. Or indeed last season where specialist left-backs were out for some time to the extent that a defensive midfielder in Sörensen had to bale us out for a prolonged period (or indeed Dan Barden going in goal for a couple of games as a very callow youngster).

It clearly worked, as we won the Champs with a record number of points for a Norwich City team. Furthermore, we gained a more drilled backline because of it, as Gibson and Giannoulis essentially play next to each other. You'd have to rebuild that again at first-team level if we'd not exercised those options.

It was just the insinuation I got from the points you were making, C - ‘waste’ amounting to basically the same thing even if that wasn’t the precise word used, hence why you’re suggesting it could have been spent elsewhere (I don’t know where though because we needed to fill and upgrade those positions regardless). And let’s face it, when making transfers, whether they turn out good or bad, unless we sign a milkman for a winger or something, I can never see how we can question it in hindsight when we don’t have that benefit at the time just as the recruitment team do not. We don’t have a crystal ball unfortunately!

CD Malingerer clearly does Alexo.

Or he's being deliberately obtuse.

Or he's  a Binner

Or he really has no idea about how to build a squad without bottomless pockets,  a crystal  ball and a magic wand.

Or.......... I'd better stop now as I may reveal how ridiculous  I find the OP.

Not everyone Tillo. Just some who make it blatantly  obvious. Though the bit he hasn't made obvious is which one he is.

I know which one you are👍😇😉🥄

We ask a lot from our fullbacks - there's no way both max and williams stay injury free throughout, and we'll often need to sub during game time - they're also important to how we play so no problem spending money there. Not just that, Gian helped us to promotion in the first place which more than covered his outlay.

Same for Gibson, integral to promotion and will likely play 20 odd games this season. Again, for his price, bargain at Prem level.

Ok,

So the overriding concensus is that we didn't commit too soon.

I don't think we did, no, not when you look at what one injury in either position would mean for us at this level.

I think people also vastly underestimate just how good Skipp was last year as well

I'm not sure anyone underestimates how good Skipp was last year, he literally grew with us. This can be summed up by the vast majority of people expressing their belief that he is now too good for us and that Spurs would most likely keep him and not loan him to us again or consider selling him.

Predictable answer to a slightly daft question. That isn't meant to be a disrespectful comment of you, but more the question, I'll explain. First off, there isn't enough information yet with which to judge.

The question you are really asking is "Do you think Gibson and Giannoulis are good enough for the Premier League? And if your answer is no, would you have been happier if we had been able to say no to making their deals permanent and find other similarly priced but better solutions to those positions... or a worse player like Quintilla to play back up?"

That's why people have struggled with the question you pose. Firstly we don't know yet, they could both develop further this season and be solid players for us. 3 games, in which Giannoulis only played 1.5 games, is not a lot of time to judge half the aspect of that question.

The latter part of the question is almost unfathomable for most of us because you'd be hunting two players at around £7.5m a piece. Less than we paid for Gibson. As I have pointed out, top or even promising Championship CB's are being priced at £10-15m minimum. The suggestion of Quintilla is a bit odd in that he clearly wasn't as good as Giannoulis - why would you want a cheaper player who we know isn't as good as the player we brought in to replace him?

Spoke at length to two Spurs fans last night. They couldn't believe the improvement in Skipp since he'd last played for Spurs. "I don't know what you did to him, but he's come back a hell of a player!" were their words.

I suspect Chelsea and Man Utd are hoping for the same level of impeovement.
