Bovril 219 Posted August 22, 2021 (edited) Timeline: - Just before Christmas Buendia and his agent were told that he could go (whether Norwich were promoted or not) but the transfer fee ‘would have to start with a 3 at the front’. This settled Buendia down and reassured him to give his all. - Villa and Arsenal the two clubs firmly interested. - Villa put the first bid in end of May. £30m+£3m add ons. - Arsenal then bid £30m+£5m add ons. - A week later to avoid a bidding war, Villa made a counter offer, ‘take it or leave it’, £33m+£5m add ons+10% sell on clause. - Villa bid accepted and Buendia completed medical in Birmingham before Arsenal could respond. king canary 7,605 Posted August 22, 2021 It's interesting but it also directly contradicts Michael Bailey reporting there was no agreement he could leave. So who to believe?
Yobocop 1,098 Posted August 22, 2021 We got the right price for a championship play maker and replaced him with two top flight midfielders and a wonder kid In time this piece of business will be heralded as a master stroke

Yes, we’ll be in Europe via some random ‘fair play’ route (as we’re too nice to tackle) whilst being set for another slog in the Champs…..
AJ 1,218 Posted August 22, 2021 Not our player anymore, no point having him here if he wanted to leave and it gave us money to reinvest in the squad to try and develop new talents

Crafty Canary 495 Posted August 22, 2021 Emi would have made no difference to the results of the opening 2 games had he stayed.
The Bunny 309 Posted August 22, 2021 Rather confirms what was suggested on here originally, that Webber was actively trying to sell out best player from the get-go, with no intention of trying to persuade him to stay. The “they’ll have to offer a record fee” statement was nothing but a “come and get him” (as many said at the time). Let’s face it, we are a selling club. There is no intent to stay up. That is “the model”. That’s twice in a row now they’ve made no attempt to make a fist of staying up after getting promoted. Pocket the money, go down, spend nothing. Maybe even sell your best players if it helps the bank balance. It’s hardly subtle. Is anyone surprised the players have given up on the pitch? The board had given up before a ball was even kicked.

You say some of the right things but kinda miss the point. We needed to upgrade on players across the pitch as some signings have got to a point where they aren’t keeping up with the general level of the squad (Stiepermann, Placheta being replaced with Lees-Mous and Tzolis for example). the simple fact is Buendia WANTED to go, so it didn’t really matter what Webber wanted. Instead he got a decent amount of money as early in the window as possible so we could get our own business done and although we still need to replace Skipp I think we’ve signed some decent talent at decent prices with the raised funds.
kirku 1,332 Posted August 23, 2021 (edited) Pretty much the whole model relies on this kind of transfer. Hate to break it to some of you, but Tzolis and Rashica didn't grow up dreaming of Carrow Road. We got 3 (?) years out of Emi, witnessed some fantastic moments, and turned a huge profit. Hopefully, that profit helps us to the next level.. Edited August 23, 2021 by kirku

It doesn’t make it true. You only have to look at Harry Kane for evidence of this. And if you read that article, it’s pretty clear there was no effort to keep him. It’s hardly like the club we’re desperately trying to persuade him to stay. He went to Villa, ffs.

The plan doesn't involve standing in the way when an acceptable bid comes in. Emi will have doubled, or more, his wages and has gone to a team with genuine European aspirations; that's the reality of the deal. Would Tzolis sign if he thought we might stand in his way in similar circumstances? As much as we love Norwich, it's a stepping stone, not the final destination. Let's hope it's a mutually beneficial one..
TheGunnShow 5,940 Posted August 23, 2021 (edited) Of course, that's how it bloody works, ffs! Develop talent, make tons of wonga, invest in talent that may be more promising and yield even higher returns whilst hopefully getting further up the league, rinse, repeat! At the same time, you're spinning a second plate by getting more established players in who in theory are at a better level than the established players leaving. Put in perspective, we got rid of Graham Dorrans and replaced him with Mario Vrancic, and now we have Pierre Lees-Melou. We sold Marley Watkins for a million after getting him on a free. We sold Jamal Lewis for fifteen million and bought Giannoulis for half that. Selling youngsters with potential who are somewhat refined with us is how we make our cash to invest. Buy cheap, sell high. Then we go to market. To keep this going, you need a good stream of promising youngsters, and excellent talent in developing them. This is why Farke is such a key part of the system, as his ability to spot, train and develop a youngster whilst giving them match experience is remarkable amongst certainly Norwich managers, if not indeed amongst managers in the top two divisions. This discussion has been done to death but Palace not letting Zaha go despite transfer requests didn't seem to put Eze or Olise or similar signing for them. So I can't see why it would destroy our chances of signing anyone.
