What went wrong today exactly

Recommended Posts

Whilst it’s true that DF usually makes substitutions late in the game it shows how bad we were on the left flank and centre midfield for him to make thise substitutions at half-time.

Duncan Edwards is right that for some unfathomable reason historical records seem to have an effect. Besides our woeful record away to Manchester City you can add Coventry City and Fulham. Last season was a rare away win against the Sky Blues.

What went wrong..........

Some of the players lost the game in their heads, mostly before a ball was kicked, some others just aren't good enough at this level, but try the hardest.

Football is as much a mental game, as it it an ability one. A team like Man City and the other top ones, have more belief in themselves, in every situation.

The rest is mostly ****

I wouldn't say we hit a melange of bum notes but watching the highlights, this sprang to mind. Particularly love that unmistakable sound of a drunken flock of seagulls getting repeatedly smacked in the beaks with rusty tin openers. 😉

He refuses to change personnel during a game????????????

I guess you didn't actually watch the game on Saturday. If you did you'd have seen that he made 2 substitutions at half time!!!

Agreed - but it was obvious from about the 5th minute that things were going wrong so why not, when we got to about 20 minutes and he would have seen enough evidence, did he not make  any changes to tactics / personnel? There's no law that says........'thou is only allowed to tinker with things at half time' is there!  He admitted that Ginoulis was having a 'mare' but then made an incredible post match comment that he didn't want to 'embarrass the player' by taking him off during the first half!!  How on earth can you defend that thinking??

By getting to half time, it would have given Daniel a chance to speak to himself and Lukas beforehand and explain his decision, rather than just hook him and Rupp off the pitch without warning. Think that was the smart thing to do and handled well to be honest.

I imagine that it was weighing up whether leaving DG on until half-time would be more or less detrimental to our season than destroying his confidence by hooking him after 20 minutes.

It might sound defeatist, but risking another mistake in a game that we'd already lost (in all likelihood) was probably a better option - long term - than embarrassing him in front of all and sundry and shattering his confidence before clearly more winnable games coming up.

Oh go on then........... list me the times in football history that a manager has made a tactical substitution after 20 minutes of a game.

It will be a very short list indeed out of the hundreds of thousands of games that have ever been played.

As much as we were poor and let's be fair we are playing with a new midfield/attack this season with players who barely know each other, we were out thought by Guardiola.  When we beat them two years ago it was because we stopped them through the middle and this time, he made sure that the team played with the whole width of the pitch with Jesus on the touchline - something that he does not normally do.  That width is what did for us, Giannoulis, who played well going forwards, had too much space to cover when defending, becuse of lack of support around him.  Great play by Man City, but sheer lack of cover by us.

Time after time we were caught out by it and it was difficult to sort because we had to devote numbers on the right hand side of the pitch to deal with the threat there, which left acres on the other side for a crossfield pass to Jesus.  It was planned, methodical and ruthless.   Yes, Giannoulis and then Mumba - who both looked up for the task and gave it everything they've got- were easily bypassed for that reason. Was there a solution?  Yes, put two banks of four defending, keep tight and organised - but what we saw was not that, it was us being pulled around all over the place and spaces where there shouldn't have been spaces.

So good tactics by Man City, poor teamwork by us (mainly because of too many new players with not enough minutes playing together) and really, that is all there is to it.

Nothing we can do about it now, time to forget it and move on.

Wish we had Jesus on the touchline.

Having Watched Southampton Vs Man Utd we lacked the Grit Southampton Had

ok Man city could do 5-0 to anyone but the speed Southampton Pressed and hassled Man utd was impressive

i think teams in the PL will let us pass it about at the back as Much as we like waiting for a Mistake / bad pass or pass into DM then  quick press then Bingo They are already won the ball back in our final 3rd

it worked in Champs but PL players are quicker and more street wise

Agree, I’ve had a moan and expressed some concerns. Now looking forward to Leicester home match where I hope we can show signs of improvement.

In reality we were expected be  on a loser at Manchester but it still hurts just the same.
They have always played with players out wide and used the same tactics of the ball inside the fullback to good effect.
I have never been a big fan of the way Norwich fullbacks play so narrow.Jesus had a field day on the right but I thought that Grealish was given far too much room to receive the ball by Aarons.
I do think that Pukki will struggle this season and Sargent will probably be our main attacking force.
Other than that I was not totally disappointed with the performance although having seen one or two good games this weekend Norwich will have to work hard to get some favourable results from some of the lesser fancied teams.I was quite impressed with S'hampton and Wolves.

Yes, we were crucified by those crosses and they were err.....nailed on....to score from them.
