I can imagine they will be similarly naïve like we were against Liverpool last time around, so hopefully a good 3 or 4 goal defeat would be nice. Especially as it is unlikely we will get much of a return out of Liverpool

Robbie Savage says all three who came up will go down. Chris Sutton says we'll be 17th. TBH I couldn't stand another season of will we won't we. We either get straight on it or I'm on another year of anti-depressants......

Brentford 1 - Arsenal 1

8PM kickoff, live on Sky Sports. Given if we want to survive this season we will most likely need to finish above Brentford this should be one to watch to see how they do. Your predictions?

2 1 Brentford for me. Why have you made a thread cambs. You can only make 1 a week, you create too many 😆

One of the worst things about having Norwich in the Prem is that it makes it impossible to hope that a team like Brentford pull off an upset against Arsenal. We need the big boys to win all their games against Brentford, Watford, Burnley etc.

Have a feeling Brentford could get something out of the game tonight, Arsenal are all over the place at the moment and very much have a feel of a team that is still focusing on transfers and squad building than actually being ready to play a match. Great time for Brentford to play them.

Lawro's call of a 1-1 isn't a bad one, wouldn't be surprised if it is a 2-1 to either team. Think it will be tight whatever the result.

1-3 Arsenal for me. Arsenal can be real basket cases in games like this, and have to give Brentford the benefit of a goal, but I honestly don’t think they’ve got close to enough quality to stay up in the PL as things stand.

Think I'd be a little surprised if Arsenal do come away with a win to be honest. This kind of game, at home, for a newly promoted club and on the opening day of the season - just stinks of some kind of a result for Brentford!

I like that we are all already hoping they lose though, I can sense the @lake district canary response in how we should look to stay up without having to simply rely on other team's losing more than us...

Wouldn't it be nice if we could enjoy these games fairly neutrally at some point in the season, not having to look for any kind of marginal gain in every single result!

One of the problems of being in the Premier League is that you can't enjoy other games and you definitely can't cheer on the underdog. Arsenal should win this at a canter and because of the season that probably lies ahead of us I hope they get 6

Agreed.

If Arsenal don't romp it then it forebodes badly for us, giving the Bees a kick-star against the recognised odds.

Yup, much as a part of me wants Brentford to win we need Brentford to lose every match.

arsenal to win 3.2 , Toney will score goals in the prem , but Brentford don't look good enough to survive.

Of course he will, he'll get to double figures in pens like he did last season...

This is the sort of weekend where you would expect Brentford to put up a plucky performance, get all the plaudits by the pundits, and win 2-1. Then the following day for us to collapse and ship 4 goals with no reply.

But f*** it. Why shouldn't it be different this time. Brentford to capitulate in front of the TV cameras and us to beat Liverpool for the first time since Goss scored in front of the Kop.

I think Toney will score, but I’m guessing Brentford will be as naive defensively as we were last time in the Prem and will quickly find out you can’t just outscore PL opposition.

Also getting the feeling they are going to be in for a similar season to our last prem season. Start out bright, win a few games score a lot of goals but then fade away as injuries and tiredness kick in finished by a relegation with the media and team being all

'Well it was a free hit we never expected to even be here in the first place plucky little old Brentford'

Nah, bol!ocks. I couldn't abide the love-ins with Sheffield Utd (with Wilder's total lack of grace) or the entitled Leeds and their extreme arrogance of believing they belonged at a higher level than dictated by their actual results on the pitch; but Brentford play football the right way and I say good luck to them. If we can't do better and finish above them then we don't deserve to.

First game of the season is always throwing up odd results generally.

I wouldn't get to het up about a result either way. Arsenal and Arteta will want to set out an early marker to ensure they mean business as they showed glimpses of last season. They'll want to show they are up for champions league qualification this season.

Brentford will be desperate to show they are not going to be soft or easy touches.

Hard to pin anything on anyone after the first game of the season though. No point reading too much into it.

As I did point out at the time that was all just a pre season joke for the pre season matches. I agreed to this with Laps, and just prior to his death I did tell him I would be handing the match thread creating to him.

Out of respect for him I no longer create such threads, which I have also stated on here before.

No worries, thanks for explaining. Someone still has to create the official match thread, though, so there's no reason why it shouldn't be you! 🙂

I don't want to predict a result, but I do know I'd rather it were us playing Arsenal at home tomorrow with Brentford playing Liverpool tonight.

I mean to be fair Brenford do have to face Liverpool twice this season

... Then again so do we so I mean
