Billy Gilmour should go to Rangers he said...............

To be fair his mother and family are strong rangers fans. So much so that during the video of him signing for us when he held up our Norwich scarf his mother could be heard saying

'Don't touch the green horrible colour'

They'll be feeling a touch depressed this morning then (along with The Mayor as well I guess).

If we stay up we need to remind him and send Billys mum a photo of him kissing the badge. Funny because a common celtic away strip is similar Norwich colours.

They take their football rivalry a little too seriously up there....

To be fair Rangers v Celtic is a lot more than city vs city. It's Protestant vs Catholic, it's the British union vs Scottish independence.. It's a lot of things. Not that that makes not wanting to touch a scarf any less silly mind

Quite a few derbies in Eastern Europe would make the Old Firm look like a Women's Institute tea party. Red Star and Partizan Belgrade spring instantly to mind. Galatasaray and Fenerbahce (and also Besiktas) in Istanbul would be another. CSKA Moscow and Spartak Moscow's a tough one.

If Polonia Warsaw get back to the top flight to face Legia, oh boy. Oh........... boy.

At international level just get Hungary against Romania or Albania against Serbia. Or Croatia against Serbia.

Russia vs Ukraine. Kosovo vs Serbia..

Not that they will play one another any time soon given those countries don't even acknowledge the others existence and all

That was why I didn't mention Serbia / Kosovo. By the same token Armenia / Azerbaijan would be.... entertaining. So would Turkey and Armenia, for that matter. Pretty sure they can't face each other.

Hungary / Romania is a really bad one nowadays, not helped with Viktor Orban in charge of Hungary and Romanian politics is corrupt beyond belief at the moment. Chuck in the Szeklers, a Hungarian-speaking minority in the heart of Romania...

Indeed! I'm sure the good folk of Glasgow are most appreciative of being told by some English tw*at what is in their best interests. It's quite clear from Gilmour's interview that Norwich was HIS first choice.

When I lived in NZ, the ethnic rivalries were intense. I played for Hungaria, who hated Island Bay who were Italian who hated Viard who were Greek who hated Diamonds who were Irish.

It was not exceptional for fights to break out with spectators and not unknown for knives to be branded.

So a big percentage of the hype surrounding rivalries can be dismissed as handbags.

Well, if the Greeks hated the Irish I guess there's no chance of getting Robbie Brady back as a reserve left-back then. 😉

I don’t think it is as intense but in Edinburgh Hearts versus Hibs is the same, with the latter, like Celtic, playing in green to emphasise their Irish Catholic roots.

Not sure what's more cringeworthy and embarrassing.. Scotsmen pretending to be Irish so they can hate on the English even more or those American 'My great great grandads cousins aunties sisters friend was half Irish so I'm a proud full blooded Irishman up the RA' plastic paddies

I didn’t know what this was all about so did a quick scan on the bbc. Shocking:

For the first time in 10 years, Scotland began the season with two clubs in the Champions League. Within two weeks, both are out before the play-off stage.”

The cream of Scottish players (and there have been many) have always plied their trade in the English leagues.

The also-rans (and we've had a few) have done the same.

Scotland, for its population, produces a lot of decent football players.

It never reflects that much on the international stage, though.

(And Russell Martin was no more Scottish than Farke is a Dutchman.)

I thought Glasgow was pretty much united in favour of Independence (?).

In the year before Covid I had to go to Glasgow once a quarter for work. Visibly at least it's a much more Celticy city. Though that could just be a reflection of their dominance at that point.

Amazing place though. I'd never been to Scotland before and had very low expectations but Glasgow is an incredible city. I'll be going back with the family and enjoying it without the burden of work.

El Salvador  v Honduras  had a moment in the 60s and some people say that Dinamo Zagreb v Red Star got a bit tasty in 1990.

Not sure how much the games were really involved but it makes you think about the power of football.

You need to know the Catholic/Protestant history of Celtic and Rangers which is all connected to the situation in Ireland/Northern Ireland.

Generalising - but basically the Catholics in Northern Ireland want to reunite with the rest of Ireland and the Protestants in Northern Ireland want to remain part of Great Britain (The Union).

Hence the Protestants in Glasgow (Rangers fans) want to remain part of Great Britain (The Union) and don't want Scotland to become independent from the rest of the UK.  Hope that makes sense.

I know the situation with Catholic / Protestant in Northern Ireland and that Celtic was Catholic, Rangers Protestant, I wasn't, however, aware that meant Celtic was also against union just because they were Catholic. Thanks for educating me.
