Capt. Pants 3,532 Posted August 8, 2021 It was the catalyst for change at the club. In came Lambert and then followed a pretty fantastic 12 years.
alex_ncfc 616 Posted August 8, 2021 A day no Norwich fan will ever forget, whether there or not. I wonder what would have happened if we'd drawn or lost only 2-1 or something. There was no way we were getting promoted from that league with Gunn in charge.
Coneys Knee 863 Posted August 8, 2021 For some perspective, Ipswich last beat us BEFORE this fixture!

I was there, sitting right behind Paul Lambert, seeing him pacing up and down, castigating and screaming at his team, even when 5-0 up. Was quite an eye opener. However, I don't think you can say we would not have been promoted under Gunn, had we had a better start. A 2-1 loss would have been bad enough, but it was Grant Holt's first game and he and Wes had no chance to get going yet - and Theoklitis might not have totally lost his confidence had it been a better start and had Otmesobor not given Colchester the first goal. We'll never know, but the combination of that game, McNally's input, the fact that Colchester under Lambert was the first game of the season etc etc, made it into as historic a game we have ever had. You could go as far as to say that game was the best thing that ever happened to the club because of what happened afterwards - 12 years of promotions/relegations/Premier League seasons, not to mention the Wembley play off final - and just eight years later, Farke and Webber and some of the best seasons ever.......all because we lost 7-1 on the opening day of 2009. Ward 3 337 Posted August 8, 2021 No matter how many times I watch that I will always laugh at theoklitos efforts. Some of his decision making was truly astounding

A great goalkeeper and matchday host, a terrible manager. I can say with 100% certainty that I don’t think we would have been promoted if he had remained in charge.
