The point is that they are in trouble because of the huge gamble that they took with the finances of the club. They were lucky that Short was prepared to write off most of the debt. If Sunderland were to be run on a sustainable basis such as ours, they would be a regulars in the Premier League and with a ground capacity of 49,000 could be one of the top clubs in the country.
