Midfield is pretty packed, especially for small technical players - he has Rupp and Gilmour directly ahead of him. Suspect he is there to make up numbers until the new midfielder is signed and Lees-Melou completes his isolation. horsefly 4,297 Posted July 20, 2021 It seems that the defensive duties of the modern fullback no longer include tough tackling but rather an ability to harry and hold up attacks down the wing. Placheta has certainly got the speed and poise to be able to do that; how effectively is a question these friendlies might begin to answer. It think it somewhat unfair to criticise him for his decision making in the final third. It seems pretty evident that Farke has told him his default play is not to speed past defenders and swing in crosses at the first opportunity, but to cut in and offload ground passes to teammates oncoming from midfield. Pukki's stats show clearly that he does not profit from traditional wing play, and Placheta has been expected to adapt his natural attributes to serve Pukki's strengths and not his own. Whether he is capable of doing that effectively remains an open question. Trying him out in the wingback role seems a good idea to me as it may well prove the best use of his incredible speed and energy. We shall see! 3 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

As I’ve said, it’s pre-season and mainly used for fitness but if we are going to go three at the back this season then we may be a little less swashbuckling than in previous seasons, ethic may not be a bad thing Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
