pukki faster than sterling

Recommended Posts

So had Pukki not been recovering from injury would he have been even faster?

Think I'd take those numbers with a pinch of salt.

You can take these sprint speeds with a pinch of salt. Spinazzola is no slouch but there's no way he'd beat Mbappe or Traore in a 100m or 50m race.

Maybe so, but how often are you going to have to sprint 100m on a football pitch? Or even 50m for that...

Would love to know how they find these... It's also just been from this tournament, so essentially, if a player hasn't had a chance to run through full pelt you won't get an accurate comparison.

It's essentially saying - of the sprints recorded so far in this tournament...

Much ado about nothing, basically.

This surprises no one who has paid any attention to Teemu.

0:18 Look at Emi's quick thinking. Teemu accelerates away from defence after catching possession of the ball. Teemu touches the ball 3 times. In PL, he probably has time for 2.

1:06 This is a ridiculous pass from Emi. He barely looks! Teemu accelerates, 2 touches to score. This is realistic for PL: Two touches.

1:34 Again, runs away from defence, 3 touches to score. His little move against GK won't work in PL, but he knows it and will adjust.

2:47 Emi's big brain pass. Oh my God. Teemu takes the scenic route around defender to score on 1st touch. Pace!

3:00 Emi. Todd! But look at Teemu's acceleration...3(!) touches to score. This would have worked in PL.

3:34 Quick thinking, explodes to score.

5:23 My favorite goal of the season. One of the best passes I've ever seen. Messi couldn't have done it better than Emi. Teemu is very fast, but in PL he needs to take his shots sooner.

5:52 The reason why Farke loves Teemu. His IQ is off the charts.

Seeing a lot of these at the moment... I guess the thing with Sterling is his off the ball intelligence and reaction speed makes it appear that he's even faster than he is.

Problem for a game like FIFA is they have to try make it realistic but also make it fun within 2 six minute halves. This means making some phases of play over powered. People want to see Sterling getting free of his marker more than he would in reality as this stops there being so many 0-0 draws. The reason Sterling would get free of Hanley (he didn't the other day though 😉) is his off the ball movement or acceleration.

There'll be plenty of surprises with other players that are deemed "slow" as well.

...

That is an interesting point. I am sure Sterling is very fast generally, but his bursts seem to really set him apart.

Sterling, Messi, Emi, Gilmour, Adam Armstrong... As smaller players with low center of gravity they are really fast off-the line. They turn fast, their ball control is excellent, they don't topple over easily. Basically everything they do is 10% faster due to shorter limbs. Messi has lost atleast half-a-step, but still can comfortably beat most players in the first 10 meters.

Between them and taller fast players like CR7, Ronaldo (9) and Bale, are players like Mbappe and even Max Aarons who accelerate rapidly and can cover distance too. I'd include Arjen Robben here despite him being quite tall at 180cm, because of his explosiveness and technical ability. Teemu Pukki belongs in this group. His speed is not as obvious in PL because the opposition pits their fastest defenders against him. Make no mistake about it, though. He is fast.

Liverpool match in February 2020 had two good examples:

1:12 Teemu more than keeps pace with Gomez (12) who is extremely fast and powerful. Attempt is thwarted by the excellent GK and a weakish pass from Rupp (who created the opportunity it should be noted)

5:12 This is the problem against top PL opposition: They are good at everything. Emi's pass is excellent and Teemu is very fast. His 2nd touch is the attempt as it should be, but Van Dijk pressures him to take it well outside the box.

Teemu(*) wasn't going very fast leaving London, on the M11, at 00.30 this morning

*If indeed it was him in his car, but it had the Registration plate T11MO P, so a nice presumption, to wile away the journey

Saving his energy for the coming season obviously. 🙂

Good, glad to see some players know how to drive well and safely
