TeemuVanBasten 3,328 Posted July 9, 2021 I heard he'd impressed last season and caught glimpses where he was the best Toon player on the pitch, but didn't realise he'd pushed on enough to be rewarded with a Mike Ashley special. Has left his twin in the dust here really hasn't he!
king canary 8,757 Posted July 9, 2021 6 years? You don't see that very often. Great for the lad though, he worked hard to get back in favour and has made it work for him.
TeemuVanBasten 3,328 Posted July 9, 2021 Good example of where the old "everybody has a clean slate" cliche that managers spout actually pays off, as he was finished at Newcastle under Benetiz, and Steve Bruce has got him playing.
AJ 1,359 Posted July 9, 2021 Guess it works both ways, if he develops and continues to improve as he did last season he could become a decent PL player and therefore command a high fee if a team were interested. At the same time, give him small pay rise now but tie him down for 6 years means he can't then come back asking for more money in a couple of years. Fair play to him though, seemed to be failing up North but he's got his head down and worked his way into the first team as one their regulars before the end of the season
cambridgeshire canary 7,798 Posted July 9, 2021 (edited) Don't think he's that amazing of a player, but he's clearly still a solid option and good enough for Newcastle and their 'let's pray we don't go down' current philosophy. 6 years is an odd one, but either way good for him I guess Edited July 9, 2021 by cambridgeshire canary
ncfcstar 342 Posted July 9, 2021 I read somewhere, can't remember where so I can't find it, that six year contracts are going to become more and more common now for key players.  I'm assuming because of financial security for the club and completely removes the risk of a highly rated player just downing tools and waiting for their contract to expire. I would have thought they come with other risks though, like serious injury, or of the player getting far too comfortable and not performing to their best (AKA Alex Pritchard syndrome).
Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Man 4,620 Posted July 9, 2021 (edited) Mike Ashley has form for his long contracts; he famously gave Alan Pardew an eight-year deal once upon a time. That went wrong quite quickly didn’t it?
