England’s Best Performing Managers

Recommended Posts

Given the criticism of Southgatr on here I thought I’d look at our best performing managers.

There is only the World Cup and European Nations Championship as major tournaments that I have considered. I have only taken into account those managers who have achieved QFs or higher finishes and I have taken the WC to be worth more than the Euros for equivalent finishes.

On this basis the rankings are:

1. Sir Alf Ramsey.    WCF, WCQF, EuroQF

2. Gareth Southgate. WCSF, EuroQF (+)

3. Bobby Robson. WCSF, EuroQF

4. Sven Goran Eriksson. WCQF x 2,  EuroQF

5. Terry Venables. EuroSF

6. Walter Winterbottom  WCQF x 2

7. Fabio Capello  EuroQF

I have taken a SF finish to outrank QF finishes even if more lower finishes have been achieved.

So Gareth Southgate is currently our equal second best performing manager with the possibility of going outright second.

Gareth Southgate is now England’s all time second best manager.

Two semi finals from 1970 to 2016, now two semi finals in the last three years. What a record.

Not sure which one you are forgetting as 3 semi finals

Russia World Cup

Nations League

Now Euro 2020

Yeah but considering the Nations League alongside the Euros and WC is like considering the Johnstones Paint Trophy alongside the FA Cup.
