So, Brentford or Swansea?

Recommended Posts

Tricky one this, if I was to answer with sheer impulse I’d say Brentford. That’s purely from a new club in the top flight and curiosity point of view.

But in terms of who would benefit us the most going up it gets a little harder. Swansea defensively have a good foundation to survive if they were to go up. I think they are dull and effective for the most part, they could do a similar sort of thing to Sheffield and grind out the results needed. They’ve also been a tricky team for us over the last few years, not an away game I’d feel completely confident with.

Brentford offer a different style and they could go one of two ways; they look like us in 2019 and play some great exciting stuff and loose 3-1 and 2-1 regularly, or they manage to piece it together enough to do a Leeds and score more than the damage they take each match. I’d fancy us against them in the top flight, especially if we got them later on in the fixture windows and they had be thumped a few times. My other concern is that Brentford would potentially be a direct competitor in the transfer market to us, they have a similar style and ethos and would be looking for relatively cheap options too.

anyway, what say you!

Swansea-I go to Wales for a weekend every year with my Watford mates, a Swansea away day will give us an excuse to go for an extra weekend 😄

Brentford would get beaten a lot more easily and regularly than Swansea. Toney is unknown and won’t get anywhere near the chances he has in the championship. Ayew has experience of the league so knows how to score in the PL.

Brentford are the 2019 us, will entertain and get a lot of plaudits - but will go down comfortably. Swansea could bore teams to death and grind out some results.

Brentford deserve it more, would be a new team for the PL, would be more entertaining to watch and would definitely keep any focus away from us so we can just go about our business.

So Brentford for me.

I see so many people writing Toney off and I don’t know why. He has scored 32 goals from 143 shots this season-an average of a goal every 4.5 shots. Teemu has 26 goals from 137 shots-an average of a goal every 5.25 shots. Of course, Toney has scored 10 penalties this season, so let’s make that 22 from 133-an average of a goal every 6 shots. Take out Teemu’s 5 penalties-and he missed 2-so that’s 21 goals from 130 shots-also an average of a goal every 6 shots. Not much difference between the ratios yet lots of people say that Toney needs 7 or 8 chances to score? 😳

Toney is only 24, still learning and improving and I don’t see any reason to think that he will not score regularly in the PL if Brentford get promotion.

Brentford for me, Swansea might not concede too many but they just won't score enough to win many games in the PL.

Don’t like Swansea, never have - but go to watch the Bees a fair bit with mates, so it’s a no brainier; they deserve their chance.

They're pretty evenly matched teams so it's hard to call... Who would have the smaller transfer budget?

If I had to call one now, I'd go for Brentford because they seem like quite a unique club (scouting, transfer ethos) and they haven't been in the PL before. I also think Steve Cooper is the better manager, so Brentford are probably more likely to go down.

Absolutely understand where you're coming from but Teemu offers far more to the team than Toney does. We've seen Teemu score past top defences, whereas Toney struggled against Hanley and Gibson both games this season.

Theres just something about Toney that screams Luciano Becchio or Jermaine Beckford to me. Killer in the championship but won't cut it in the prem.

Although they pretty much threw away automatic promotion, I still feel Brentford deserve to win - reached the final last season and were 3rd best in the league. Was surprised to see Swansea make it as they were really poor towards the end of the season. Swansea were relegated from the PL a few years back (2018?), and may still have some left over from then. As far as I’m aware I don’t think Brentford currently have any players with PL experience and although I don’t know anything about how their owners would support them financially, it’s never a good idea to spend loads on new signings when newly promoted:

1) In case you go straight back down

2) No new signing is guaranteed play the same for their new club as they did for their old club - they might do the same, they might even do better, but they might do worse

3) Too many new signings is like creating a new club - they need time to settle in and get to know all the players from the previous season, plus all the other new signings which cause it to take time for the team to gel

With 1 new signing, that player just has to get to know the players from last season

With 8 new signings, each of them has to get to know the players from last season plus the other 7 new signings

Brentford for me.

Swansea used to be good to watch but are dire nowadays and would stink the place out in the Premier League.

Would be a nice bit of rivalry between us, Brentford and Watford.

I agree that you get more than just goals with Teemu-you get great work rate and defending-but Toney has also got 10 assists this season. And you say he struggled against Hanley and Gibson, but still scored in one game against us. And look at his record against the 5 meanest defences this season-6 goals in 10 matches. (Teemu scored 1 in 10 matches).

All I’m saying is that writing him off on the basis of the number of chances he needs to score is as foolhardy as Lawrenson’s comments about Teemu at the start of last season 🤣

Brentford. Swansea shouldn't be playing in this country's league system let alone be in the Prem

Booting Swansea, Cardiff, Wrexham, Newport and Merthyr Town out of English football would be a good way to make Wales another problem child, at the moment their pro-independence party doesn't come close to winning in the Welsh Parliament.

I do find the Merthyr Town one really weird though, why do they play in the seventh tier of English football which is probably no better than the Welsh league! They could challenge for the title and get European football if they played in the Welsh league.

Brentford for me.

They are very much like us 2 seasons ago, really dangerous going forward but not that solid in defence.

As we found in the championship as one of the best teams you have a lot of the ball, against PL teams you have less and have to defend and if your defence isn't that strong you will get exposed.

Brentford, two fold. Firstly because it's something a bit different for the PL, and secondly because teams without strong defences do worse with the step up.

Also could see Marc Guehi being a decent shout for us if Swansea don't make it.

Definitely Brentford, they've been consistently at the sharp end of the Champs and not quite made it, and they also like playing good football on the deck.
