Top 6 results disappointing for City

Recommended Posts

Norwich City's results against the runners up and play off contenders have largely been a disappointment.  In the 10 games against the better teams in the table were at home 3 wins and two defeats the recent defeats by Watford and Bournemth radically affected what could have been an excellent return.  Away from Carrow Rd it was 2 draws and three losses.  11 points secured out a possible 30 does not impressive stats.  These stats against the better teams in the division makes the upcoming PL fixtures look particularly daunting.

However the results of the other top teams against each other were not impressive.  Watford with their impressive home record won 3 and drew 2 away from Vicarage Rd it was one win against you know who and four losses.  14points from 30.

Brentford at home won 2 drew 2 and lost 1, away won 2, drew 2 lost 1.  16 points from 30.  The best run of results against top 6.

Swansea  at home won 2, drew 2 lost 1. away won 1, drew 2 lost 2.  13 points from 30.

Barnsley at home won 2 drew 1 lost 2, away won 1 drew 1 lost 3.  11 points from 30.

Bournemth at home won 3 lost 2, away won 1 guess who, drew 1 lost 1.  13 points from 30.

The stats show the worst results among the top 6 were recorded by Norwich City, against the other also rans the only defeats were Luton and Derby.  We shall need to improve massively against the better teams or it is going to be another relegation.

Who cares. We are up and champions. People always have to find something to put a dampner on the day/season.

Youre right Pete. We've been a real disappointment this season and let ourselves down big time.

Farke out, Webber Out, Delia out. Bring back Antoine Sibierski.

The squad will need significant strengthening if it is to stay up next year the quality of the opposition will be much higher.

Who cares, enjoy it. We had a man harshly sent off against B'mouth and were drunk playing against Watford. Across the season we were the best team by 6 clear points and that's all that matters.

I really don’t like that people read too much in to these stats.

I know it is making excuses, but to my mind we have been more than a bit unfortunate with how these specific fixtures have fallen as the season went on.

Here are the fixtures Pete refers to;

Bournemouth (A) - 0-1. Start of the season before we hit form, and we had no Buendia nor Cantwell. We had them pegged back for the entire second 45 but couldn’t create much (I wonder why).

Bournmeouth (H) - 1-3. We bossed them for the first 20 minutes until that BS sending off. Meaningless.

Watford (A) - 0-1. Not a great display. But the first game for their new manager; players wanting to prove themselves. Watford’s home form was very good but it was still a tight game which could’ve gone either way.

Watford (H) - 0-1. We had nothing to play for compared to them, as they still had to confirm promotion. We had also just lost to Bournemouth 3 days before with 10 men for 70 minutes, followed by the promotion party. Fairly easy to spot why we weren’t quite ‘at it’.

Swansea (A) - 0-2. Prob the worst performance of the bunch. But we had no Buendia. During a bit of a blip in our form after two 0-0 draws. They scored from two individual errors, one from McLean and a howler from Krul.

Barnsley (A) - 2-2. Last game of the season, Farke gave sentimental send offs to Tettey and Vrancic. Who cares about judging this performance really?

So all in all I think we’ve been under somewhat mitigating circumstances in these games. And I know I’m making excuses, but the impact of a missing Buendia is well documented, and the fact we played about half of these games after promotion was confirmed when we had a lot less to play for than our opponents, surely is an understandable explanation.

I have no doubts that a fully fit and in-form side would dismantle all of these teams. And we saw that very very clearly for the first 20 minutes against Bournemouth before that bloody sending off.

Absolutely.

And had we not been dealt a poor hand against Bournmouth and actually tried against watford it would have been a 10-11 point gap. In any case an excellent season, considering

I think there are some valid concerns. But we didn't actually concede a goal in the home fixtures until Giannoulis was sent off, and then of course the Watford game was too soon after the promotion party to be meaningful. The performances against Brentford and Reading (who spent much of the season in the top 6) demonstrated our actual class.

I think we will need to be a little more clinical in our away games next season. But the majority of our points will come at home.

There are way too many variables here. You've done a little bit of research on things that have no relation whatsoever to our standing with respect to the Premier League, and finished with a flourish that is essentially a non statement wrapped in a wild guess. Who are the 'better teams'? We won the league. With a whole summer to come, there is absolutely no relation to be made between our current group's results and the potential of the squad that enters the Premier League.

I don't mean to be rude but I don't see how anyone who has seen many football seasons run into the next attempts to draw such a weird and unrelated conclusion to being beaten by a few good teams in a title winning season?

We need to recruit well to ensure we can compete in an athletic sense as well as a technical one. There's probably a few positions we can upgrade if we are smart about it.

Luckily, we are.

Paul Cook is looking to hire a kit man as coach, that should gee your players up next season!

Sad thing is that this must have taken a bit of working out, but is ultimately a total waste of time.  We finished top by a country mile, the rest is largely irrelevant.

You don't bother taking form into it then? We won more away games than anyone else. We got more points in the three 46 game leagues.

Does it matter who they were against? And just maybe shows the other sides ability to raise their game against lower opposition.

pete...pete..you simply cannot dissect a portion of a season and then end your post with that  sentence. Anybody can take a portion of a season and make of it whatever they want...let me do one for example, lets assume Brentford won the play offs...

As they finished the season with a big 15 points less than Champions Norwich in the fixtures against the teams outside the top 6, these stats against the weaker teams in the division makes the upcoming PL fixtures look particularly daunting for Brentford.

See? anyone can pull a set of fixtures from the 46 and make something from it..its pointless...only one that matters is what happened in 46 games.
