Social media boycott views?

Recommended Posts

The boycott is a reaction to discriminatory abuse. This message-board has and does still contain a fair amount of abuse, and some of it certainly discriminatory, so I don’t think it matters whether strictly speaking it qualifies as part of the social media or not.

An obvious solution for those who want to post over the weekend is to limit themselves to the PUPs thread and those dealing purely with footballing issues, such as the match against Reading, and avoid those threads that touch on controversial questions. Just for those few days, and then let all their accumulated bile pour out next week...

1. Forums like this don't fit the definition of social media. They're oldskool web 2.0. So you can post on here as much as you like and it's not going to affect the boycott.

2. The issue is players getting abuse on their own channels. Not whether or not someone one the Pink'Un forum has some stale opinions.

3. The official accounts of clubs and players are going to be going silent on twitter, FB, insta, etc. I don't think they're expecting all the fans to be silent too. They just aren't giving the opportunity for trolls to be horrible directly at players, and quite right too.

Surely being selective defeats the object of the boycott, Purple?

No, not done in the way I suggest.

I follow your logic, and whilst restricting yourself to certain threads, wouldnt give opportunity for the perpetrators to offend, surely the boycott is to look further than that, and raise awareness etc. Its a very small sacrifice to pay in my view.

Wow - Ill address those one at a time.

Factually incorrect as you started responding to me  yesterday, which I thought was strange, but gave you the benefit, but you didnt take long to revert to type. I said in a public thread that you had  appeared to have blocked me, I didnt KEEP asking him. And why bring that up now? Maybe they have changed your meds! Seriously I do think, and hope you get the help you need,

You are nothing more that a self opinionated shoite stirrer, who hides his true persona behind the charity fund raising you do. I've seen through you from day one.  I never trust a fund raiser who bangs on about it all the time. I think is shows they are doing it for the wrong reasons, and more about them that the fund raising objective.

If you don't like what I say then block me, simple as. If you reply to my post, I will as I see fit reply back, but that only ruins this board for others.

How ironic you behave like you do, especially on a thread about social media boycotts  and respecting others.

I look forward to you ignoring me for another 18 months or more.

That's the way Greavsy, let it all out.

I'm just relieved someone on here has seen through me and found out what I'm really like.

I think I'll go back in hiding...

We’ve seen posts and posters stray into racist territory on here a few times but threads and I think very occasionally posters are removed if it gets remotely unacceptable. To compare that to the inappropriate content and abuse that continues pretty much unchecked on Twitter and other social media applications is laughable. The boycott is an attempt to hurt the big companies where it hurts - in their traffic figures, i.e. their pockets. Archant isn’t the problem, Facebook and Twitter are.

Ok, I’ll have my say.

Firstly, I fully support the stance that our club and all others are taking. The abuse that players are subjected to is ridiculous and unacceptable. Platforms need to do more to prevent it and act upon it when it does take place. It isn’t just football, jockeys take some horrible guff from people talking through, normally, their pocket. It isn’t just in the sporting arena either.

If people wish to join in and stay off social media then I understand that and why they want to show solidarity. I also understand that for a lot of people social media has been a lifeline in difficult times and allowed them to stay in touch with people they haven’t been able to socialise with in person. If they wish to continue to do so over the weekend, I am absolutely fine with that too.

Hopefully it makes us all consider what we post a little bit more and how what we say could impact others. We can all do better.

Finally, I’m disappointed that on a thread discussing this matter and actions taken (or not) against people that post abuse against others, the thread originator has elected to call my Dad a t w a t, a shoite stirrer and then proceeded to launch a character assassination on him and his motives for fundraising.

You don’t like him. That’s your prerogative. However, I will point out that I know him far better than you Greavsy and a more selfless and genuine person you couldn’t wish to meet. He ran events for many years to raise money for EACH and, along with Ray and others, has given up his time and effort to raise funds for, initially, the Academy when funding was needed and subsequently for the CSF. The reason he did those things and continues to do them, is that he cares deeply about these causes and others. If you think him “banging on about it” is some exercise in narcissism, you are way wide of the mark. He HAS to keep “banging on” because without people (like you and I) making selections and contributing, it will fall on its face. The money raised is important and facilitates great things for a charity looking to offer opportunities to folk that otherwise might not have them.

Of course, I am biased. He’s my Father. That said, I find your comments offensive, abusive and completely unjustified and unsubstantiated. Given the amount of people that donate, sponsor and contribute to the fundraising you find so narcissistic, it must amaze you that you find yourself in a minority of one.

I’d politely suggest that you retract. Especially given the subject matter of this thread. I hope you’re big enough to do so.

Yes , I think so . Also a big Norfolk connection . It’s from Charles Boycott , an English land agent in Ireland  , who the locals decided to have nothing to do with . Hence the word to “boycott “ . A hell of a lot more to the story than that , check it out folks .

I know this as I’ve done a fair bit of work on St.Mary’s Church , Burgh St.Peter ,  Norfolk where Charles Boycott and other Boycotts are buried .
Also church has an amazing Ziggurat  tower , courtesy of an earlier member of the local Boycott family .

Outstanding Mr Pockthorpe - I think that's a 5 out of 5 answer. Possibly a bonus point for applied knowledge. I knew about the link to Norfolk but I've no idea who or what was 'Ziggurat' but I intend to find out. I doff my cap to you sir.

Your purple limited addition replica shirt is on its way. I nabbed a dozen of them off Ebay

I’m not letting this go unchallenged. Really poor form Greavsy .

I don’t care or know much about your disagreements .

What I do know is that Nutty Nigel puts in a huge amount of effort for Rays Funds , displaying no ego at all .

So anyway..

Is anyone going to boycott the pink un this weekend?

Yup. I probably will tbh.

I'll also boycott certain people who are doing a very good job of using mental health to insult people and suggest others have been horrible to them despite over the course of several threads just post histrionics repeatedly.

Agreed. I've blocked him. Happy to say so.

I've been around for long enough to remember various different incarnations of this forum, starting back when I was a young'un at 16 in 1998. That was when I had saved up and bought the first PC my family had owned to help me do my A-Levels.

Nutty was around back then, and a few others. And whilst I may never have met them all in person, or even Nigel, they were a good bunch to be engaging with online. Always respectful, always kind. I haven't got time for people who repeatedly just try to grind people down in discussions or just because they are insecure about them being an established member of the forum.

Very much this.

The boycott is to hurt the stupid social media companies who are doing nothing to stop the vile abuse seen on their platforms day after day.

This should and hopefully will, be just the start of some action against these money counters. It’s a small step, but an important one.

A ziggurat is a stepped pyramid (ie with stepped levels rather than a smooth surface) common in the first civilisation that grew up around Uruk and Ur in Mesopotamia.

I think the point, or a point at least, is that a racist post, tweet or whatever, is still a post. That is, the social medium in question logs one more action, allowing it to claim that they are more valuable. A cynic might suggest that if that post is contentious and subsequently generates many responses objecting to it, the company in question would see that as a good thing. So they have no incentive to remove objectionable content, since it is actually increasing their traffic numbers. Commerce trumps morality (any pun unintended, however appropriate) for them and this boycott is an attempt to show solidarity with the view that this is not OK.

I will try and support it, although checking Facebook and the rest has become such an ingrained habit, I can see myself failing - which is a valuable lesson in itself I guess.

Aaah the 'fertile crescent' ....takes me back to History lessons circa 1973ish. I didnt answer the Boycott question as it was recently covered on a Radio station here, and although I had a bit of an idea about it that was mainly correct, the 'radio refresher' made me feel as if id been given the answer too recently.

Note to Greavesy.....poor show chap, I know you like to challenge and enjoy a good to and fro...no harm there, but a step too far was taken last night. Do you really feel that way about Nuttyo?...really?  Fundraising is a thankless task, many, many hours put in behind the scenes and as im sure you are really aware, someone has to drive, collate and promote this. This should not be mistaken for self agrandisment. I'm sure, though I dont personally know the fella, that Nuttyo would take any apology in good grace. Ball's in your court chap.

Whilst I applaud the intention, can’t see it making any difference.

The idiots (or whatever you want to call them) will still be there when the boycott is over.

The problem is people are a lot braver whilst sitting anonymously behind a keyboard. Can you imagine anyone having the b@lls to go up to a Duncan Forbes, Grant Holt or Dion Dublin and say something derogatory to their face? I don’t think so.

It’s time these social media providers got their act together and to be honest that also includes this site and the minority of people who get personal and abuse other posters on a site where the vast majority of us supposedly support the same team. Healthy debate is one thing but some people take it too far at times.

Why don’t we set a precedent and all be nice to each other. Or is that too much to ask?

This was my response when this was talked about on a previous thread. I think it’s still relevant

Absolutely no problem Kathy. I'm glad that Rays Funds can accommodate both those who boycott and those who don't.

I do think what people are being asked to do is about as clear as mud. It surprised me but Youtube is the second most popular social media app after Facebook. Yet it's not on the list of accounts on our club's communication. Does it count? I spend more hours on Youtube than any other social media. I will still be using youtube over the weekend too.

I shall be taking part in the boycott. Not on Twatter or Instagram only Facebook so it will not be too difficult.

As for this forum i regard it as a form of social media so i wont be hanging around here either. I have done my PUPs pick and although the banter that takes place on the thread over the weekend will be a miss i am sure i can hang it out as Nutty puts up the results late on a Monday night well past my bedtime so sometimes i don't see it until i am having my Weetabix at Tuesday breakfast.

My congratulations or hard luck posts for the pickers can wait until then just for this once.

Agree Tilly. People can choose which is how it should be.

I'm hoping the TNC boys still do their watch along leaving it for people to choose whether it's part of the boycott or not.

I do think it’s best if the boycott is targeted towards the problematic platforms like Instagram/Facebook and Twitter.

Boycotting this site seems unproductive to me and surely only serves the aforementioned sites? Wouldn’t they be hurt more if people turned to alternative platforms that do moderate abuse properly?
