A much more relevant death to these parts than that other bloke.

Norwich fan and a lovely chap to boot. Condolences to his family.

Really good MP, nice chap and very badly treated by the Labour party

Yep, refused to be bullied by Blair or Brown so carried the can for the expenses fiasco, despite his crime being far tamer than many who escaped punishment. Handed Norwich North to a vacuous Tory puppet who has held it ever since.

Supporter or not, he still did abuse his expenses.

He was a saint compared to Ed Balls and his wife, but neither of those faced the kangaroo court.

Exactly, plenty did much worse but avoided the crosshairs.

I knew Ian well and he was a remarkable man in every way.  Although Celtic were his first love he was a massive Norwich City fan and held a season ticket for many years. One of my best nights supporting Norwich was in October 1996 when we beat Ipswich 3-1 under the floodlights at Carrow Road and there was a group of about 20 of us, including Ian, in The Snakepit. Only 7 months later Ian would become MP for Norwich North, but I think it's safe to say that you would never have guessed it if you had seen him that night. 🙂

Ian was also a talented footballer in his own right and had been on the books of St Mirren in his younger years. As many people who played against him can testify he was not only a good player, but was also ultra competitive. A good friend of mine was telling me only the other day how Ian did a Vinnie Jones/Paul Gascoigne on him in a friendly game.

Prior to becoming the MP for Norwich North Ian was the Dean of the School of Biological Sciences at the UEA, a post he held with distinction for a number of years. He was a world renowned expert in the field of cancer research and was deeply passionate about science and medical research.

Ian was a larger than life character with a great sense of humour who was genuinely at ease with everybody he met. He will be sorely missed by his beloved family and by all who knew him. RIP.

Very sad to hear this. Dr Gibson served the city well as Member of Parliament, and was true to his Socialist principles.  I always enjoyed hearing his speeches at rallies, and was fortunate to be in his company a few times.  Condolences to his family and friends and comrades.

His comments on the amount of incest in Norfolk was well received.

His comments were about inbreeding, not incest. As a biologist, Gibson's point was fair, but to the baying right-wing mob it was an opportunity to smear and have a little sob.

Gibson was triggering gammon before it was cool.

Knew Gibbo at UEA in the 80's, top bloke and on the left side of politics was still ok and avid Canaries fan.

So in this thread to a fine MP you have managed to make a snide comment about a vacuous Tory puppet, a baying right-wing mob, and triggering gammon.

Can't you just leave your ugly side out of this for just a few moments so we can all remember a good man who served his constituency well?

Does that make a difference when referring to the other bloke

Yes, capitals would imply a degree of respect that doesn't exist.

I figured the best way to show respect to a recently deceased and brilliant gammon-triggerer was to trigger a gammon or two myself.

So thank you for playing your part so wonderfully.

No. You must take a good amount of credit. The triggerer has nothing without a good triggeree to play with.

Why would you want to play on a thread devoted to the life and memory of a respected local MP? Are you normally this lacking in self-awareness? It's unbelievable.

I think you need to do a bit more research into that respected local MP. You'd soon realise what side he'd be on in this little spat.

I used to love it when bbc radio would introduce a “Norwich MP” and Gibbo’s seemingly (to me) Glasgow accent followed. Didn’t know he was a Celtic fan, but right colours.

Although I'm not a Labour supporter in general, I totally agree with the sentiments expressed here. He was a fine stalwart for Norwich North and well respected by the population at large. A great pity that he's no longer with us.
