Tories take a 10 point lead

Recommended Posts

Of course the Tories have got a massive bounce from an excellent NHS led roll-out of vaccines. This is completely unsurprising. Likewise there has been no prospect of Labour making any gains by criticising the government during a pandemic as this would have instantly been described as the lowest form of opportunism.

Let's see what happens when a judicial led inquiry is set up and exposes the calamitous failures of the government's response to Covid prior to the roll-out. You can bet your life that Boris will attempt every trick in the book to prevent that inquiry reporting before the next general election (just like he did with the Russia report and the promised inquiry into Tory Party racism).

And let's see what happens when the threat of the pandemic has largely disappeared and the public is able to turn its attention without distraction onto the disastrous brexit deal which is decimating businesses that depend for their survival on trade with the EU.

Exactly this.

Right now if Labour went on the offensive the general public would be hugely turned off. Once the dust has settled a bit though I'd want to see them going after Johnson for his dithering that led to lockdowns coming in too late, Sunak for constantly being wrong about easing restrictions and Hancock for his deeply questionable dealings.

We're likely 3 years away from another general election- if polls still look like this in 18 months I'll be very concerned.

Another example today how Johnson lies, the gullible fools seem to want to be constantly lied to.

https://www.onlondon.co.uk/boris-johnson-repeats-party-political-false-claim-about-tfl-finances-at-covid-briefing/

The Prime Minister again blamed the difficulties faced by the capital's transport body on the city's Labour Mayor when the pandemic is by far their biggest cause

Tories = Leeds.  An unassailable 9 to 10 point advantages tends to disappear over time .

Potentially. My concern at this point is that the Tories culture war strategy, however cynical it may be, has a real chance of working, especially in what used to be Labour heartlands. The way party support is changing combined with the archaic FPTP system means a road map to a labour win looks smaller and smaller.

Labour won't get back into power with SKS. He is not much of an alternative to Boris.

We need an opposition. That might end up being the Greens, far more socialist leaning than Labour under yet another Blairite.

The Tory party died well before the last election. We have the populist unprincipled do/say anything damn the actual facts to stay in power Johnson / Brexit party in charge rather like Trump was. Spin and dissemble is a way of life now - and any checks and balances non-existent (all those unpublished reports). Lowest common denominator politics.

Eventually England will see through them - but not before Covid is in the rear mirror, the cost of Brexit undeniable, Scotland has left and the UK breaks apart. England will be country that was famous once - a bit like Greece.

It's worrying the amount of people that still think Johnson has done a good job during covid. I'm not sure if they are pretending due to shock or honestly believe it. I fear we are going to have to really crash and burn, absolute rock bottom, before there are enough people to turn around this ship.

It's simply a culture war Herman - you can see that in many (to be fair not all) of the posters on here. It's those with a grudge, looking for somebody else to blame, getting one over on the so called elites (not realising they are being played by the real elites as mugs) yet not recognising that they are cutting their own noses (certainly the younger generations) off to spite their faces. We all need to be manual labourers (or retired boomers with rose tinted specs for the 1950s / 1960s and nostalgia  for 'empire', V bombers & B movies about how we won the war) in their brave new world. Sound familiar?

It will end the way all such culture wars end - an attempted levelling down of society followed by the realization of the damage done - a 'brain' drain' of the brightest and to better opportunities overseas. Auf Wiedersehen, Pet  - remember!

Sadly the notion of British pragmatism. foreign policy and respect has now been trashed forever. How do I know - its called working with people in China, Japan,. Korea, USA, Canada and yes Europe. They just give a wry saddened smile.

Never mind. Fly the fading flag.

Labour were far more socialist leaning under the last leader and got destroyed, because the majority of the British public have no interest in socialism.

All of Labours election victories in my lifetime have come with a leader that sits more to the central ground and the biggest defeats have come under people who sit further left. I don't understand how anyone can still claim that the path to victory involves moving more to the left.

Agree with that - SKS has tricky problem at present with Covid stealing all the political oxygen.

However, once it's largely past my guess is that he will be well placed roast the 'Tories' on gas mark 12.  Just remember that Churchill lost the 1945 election before the war ended (Japan was August formally ending early September 1945) !

Its says more about the gullibility of voters than it gives a reality check.

130.000dead through lack of understanding dithering and ignorance, tick. New Oil and gas option for North sea drilling sold, tick. Nothing done about systemic and recurring racism, tick. Governing via emergency laws and edicts, tick. Nowt done to level up the north, tick. 126.000 of taxpayers money for Ms. Acuri's services. tick, billions given to self serving cronies for nothing much, ain't that right Mrs. Harding? tick. Undermining of Scottish Independence with the help of the SNP, Integrity initiative and MI5, tick. inventing new threats from Russia and China to make empire lovies feel good about themselves, tick, massively increased public national depth by a trillion, tick, forcing environmental destruction via the planning process, tick, reducing pandemic stock budget by 300million before the pandemic, tick, dissing the NHS staff and carers with a cheapskate pay rise, tick. harassing BAME families who had loved ones die in custody, tick, ignoring Unionist paramilitaries harassing/threatening the police and customs and excise staff in NI, tick. failing to prosecute a massive rise in rapists, tick. Ignoring the need to adopt measures to change unsustainable projects and practices, tick. massively relying on a Tory loving opposition leader, tick

etc.etc.

and for all of that and more, the polls, some proffering leading questions to gullible voters, mark you up ten points in the lead, tick

I believe we think very much the same politically YF. I'm 'conservative' about lots of things (housing development / protection of habitats, conservation, traditional methods of manufacture etc...I realise shared with Greens too). I also care about the UK and all that is good about it. I liked your comment about Trumpian politics, dumbing down and the Tory Party. I don't recognise the current lot. I am also amazed folk might still support them. But they are! I feel dismayed at that if I am completely honest. Just who does... and why? The lack of a creditable alternative? Like you I have spoken to folk abroad too. It feels sad to me. It's going to get worse. The escape for me is in books, film, art and music. But those things are escapes albeit enjoyable pastimes.

We just have to watch I think and see a decent country go down the pan. Would never have believed a Tory government would be lowering standards of public life, in its institutions, in its morale behaviour leadership. The brain drain has started for sure.

As for culture war, you're right too. There are about 5 posters (possibly more) who love to trash anyone with even half a liberal mind. Some are older and have used the sum of their life experiences to come to these opinions. Very bitterly they go on the attack leaving a couple of options, to ignore or fight back. Not great because there must be a way of finding some consensus but it feels not. Agree too that this is far too serious a subject to be humorous about it. Sometimes humour helps lighten a subject though and I often try.

Oh well, 10 years do you reckon? Or 5 to go downhill fast? I reckon somewhere inbetween.

I think I've said this several times - 5 years and the writing will be on the wall but ten for a significant correction to be enacted (simply as England).

It's all about realities not myths coming home to bite and changing demographics plus those that are currently heavily invested without any economic exposure in the experiment fading away.

I looked up polling on EU  - even past months despite all the 'Covid' issues and redtop spin it's still heavily inverted from the ref. result.

i don' t suppose it has anything to do with Kier Starmer instructing his MPs to abstain on every important vote then?

Why vote for a bunch of professional fence sitters. Nobody knows what Labour currently stand for.

Because people will want change eventually. Centrist policies are very little different from laissez faire.

And Brexit was a big concern at the last election. It blinded people to many of Labour's policies.

As I said, I might have to go green.
