Quintilla or Giannoulis?

Recommended Posts

Probably pointless asking as its pretty clear which one Farke prefers.

But who do you rate as the best?

I personally quite like Quintilla but think we've seen all that he can offer, but have a feeling there's an extra 10% to come out of Giannoulis.

Also think that the Greek is a bit more physically well equipped for the league above.

If the club decide that McCallum hasn't pushed on enough to come into our first team though, would you be against us just signing both?

Might need more home-grown players so think McCullum will probably get the back-up gig. I'd take Giannoulis over Quintilla in a heart-beat as he's defensively more adept and physically in a different league to Quintilla. Quintilla's got a tasty line in set-pieces but that's about all he's got over Dimi.

For me, this is the key point. Both have looked OK when they've played this season, but Giannoulis' qualities are more suited to the Premier League.

I agree that it depends on McCallum. If he's ready, then he can be in the squad, but if not, we could do worse than pay the €3m for Quintilla. Homegrown rules shouldn't really come into it, providing that the surplus players like Tettey, Vrancic, Stiepermann are moved on.

Prefer Giannoulis. Looks better defensively and more experienced for the top flight - several years of both league and Champions/Europa League experience, 13caps for Greece although that depends on what countries he faced and how much game time he got. Quintilla has 26 La Liga appearances, and 1 Europa League appearance, but has looked good with taking set pieces. I think Quintilla has to make a certain number of appearances for us so not sure we’ll be able to sign him, although like others have said, if we do activate the option buy clause in Quintilla it might be worth signing him if we can’t find anyone else as I certainly think he’d be a better option than McCallum.

Quintilla is a good back up plenty of experience in big leagues, we certainly will need good cover in premiership so for me I would sign him

I think McCallum will get the pre-season to show what he's got. You don't spend seven figures on a promising youngster when you're a club with our model to write it off so fast.

Reckon he gets another season long loan.

Knowing Webber, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if we still buy Quintilla but do a deal at a reduced price as we can say he’s not our number one choice, he’s not match-fit etc. We’ve not seen enough to know for sure, but it looks to me like we could do worse.

Does anyone know if he is able to play anywhere other than LB? Presumably he could move up into midfield fairly easily, but we’re not short of options there already. Although we don’t have another set piece player as good if Mario goes.

Definitely Giannoulis for me. Suits our style going forward so much more with clever passes and runs. Quintilla has a better cross but unfortunately for him but that doesn’t come into play much considering the way we play.

be great to have him as a back up and to put pressure in the position but would he really settle for that?

With what we have at the moment, and next season, Quintilla is the only one without a contract.

If Byram recovers we would have Aarons, Mumba, McCallum, Byram and Giannoulis. All quite capable.

I've thought that Nuffo, for me Quintilla  could be a better option at left mid than Argos. He can cross a ball and his set pieces are better than Emis.  Could also be wing back if we play 3 centre halves. 3 million isn't that much if we're  building a squad.....which we  are.

Prefer Gianoulis at standard attacking LB though.  Xavi is a decent  player and I can see us taking him on.... its not a big risk really.

Giannoulis better in every respect other than crossing from deep - an attribute that doesn't suit us anyway.

Is Xavi Quintilla not another sick note?

Also, I can't say Ive really been convinced with him defensively. I agree 3m is a snip in today premier League (and possibly top championship) prices but would it not best be used elsewhere/someone else?

Having said that, better the devil you know.

I think if it's a straight up choice, it's no contest, dimi giannoulis all day.

Quintilla is more agile, quick and a fantastic crosser. However Giannoulis comes across as being the better defender, and seems much stronger. (Which is ironic given Quintilla is taller and all)

If I had to take one it would be Giannoulis, mostly down to his strength and physicality which I feel would be more suited to the Prem

If Xavi is prepared to be the understudy, I would sign both.  I suspect Stuart will look at the deal and decide, but £3M is a bargain, and much more progress than Sorensen or another right footed option at left back.  Square pegs do not succeed in round premiership sized holes.

I wonder where they see Sam’s future.  The way he was farmed out at the start of the season, when we did not have a left back must of got him worried.

Sam McCallum is still only 20 years old, I’ve never got the impression he was bought to be our number 1 LB from the off. One for the future, and some get there quicker than others. I reckon he’ll be out on loan again next season to be honest, and that will be the season where he will have to step up further - not this season (which he’s done pretty good by all accounts).

Providing Max stays, can see next seasons wide defenders being Max, Giannoulis, Quintilla, Mumba and Byram. Hope that Byram gets back to fitness because he was a stand out for me in the PL, I was very impressed with him. I wouldn’t be unhappy with those players as long as we sign a decent centre back to make sure we’re in a better position than last season - those ridiculous incessant injuries cost us big time.

I find the desire to write Mccallum off in favour of Quintilla a bit odd. Personally I'd rather keep the young, talented player with room to improve that we already own rather than pay for a player who has looked a bit lightweight when I've seen him.

I find the desire to write either off a bit odd, if McCallum comes good for us in 3 years time, he is still only 23 years old. Giannoulis and Quintilla is a good pair for now, with an even younger option in the pipeline.

There was an interview with McCallum in The Athletic recently in which he admitted to feeling out of his depth here and feeling unable to do what Farke was asking of him at Luton. Farke spoke to him the next day and McCallum admitted to being relieved to be offered a loan. I doubt he'll be back. Shame as he came over as a good lad in the interview.

I really hope he succeeds.  I suspect Farke favours a mobile, and technical fullback.  If I was Sam I would be concerned that I was loaned out, we were clearly short of left backs whilst Mumba and Omobamidele were kept in the first team squad.

None of this means he is not a talented player, Raggett for example is having a successful professional career, yet he did not fit our squad.

Exactly. I think he’s still going to be only 21 next season where he’ll surely get another season in the Championship. Certainly wouldn’t rule him out myself, I think he’ll still be considered one for the future by the powers that be. He’s had some good displays for Coventry and a couple of goals if I’m not mistaken so I would say his development is on track. As for Quintilla, he had a lot of people praising his performances before the injury so I don’t see why anything would have changed there. We had the perfect excuse to ship him back to Spain but chose not to, and that’s all I need to know. Giannoulis looks a steal though for £6mill or whatever it is. I notice he keeps the Liverpool lad out of the International side, I wonder how Liverpool supporters feel about that when you consider this all stems from selling their original target ha ha

The alternative view is is it worth spending £10m + on specialist left backs when you've got a limited budget and a talented young player already on the books?

I think it depends if the talented player fits into the way you play, and if you think you can turn a profit on loan deals or a future sale.  Sam looks like a good player, especially in a squad where the back four is more solid, perhaps a great fit at Burnley or Palace, where the structure is more regimented.

Yeah I heard about that. Unfortunately for Sam NCFC will be in the Premier League and if he didn't think he was good enough this season, he certainly won't be next. I'm not writing him off but I think our LBs for next season are already at the club and he'll be out on loan again, or possibly sold if the price is right.

I can't believe Xavi would turn down a move here even if not guaranteed a start, and would prove decent competition for Dimitris, we'd then have Mumba as even more backup for either side.

Dimi is by far a better player in our system, and probably a better player overall

Without meaning to sound rude, have you watched much of Coventry to draw that conclusion?

Also I'm not actually sure Quintilla fits our play that well- he's pretty obsessed with getting crosses in, often from deep areas which is the antithesis of what we do in attack.
