The Future Appears Bleak For Sam Byram.

Recommended Posts

The update from DF does not read well which is a tragedy for the player. Reading bewteen the lines it suggests he is fighting a losing battle which is a great shame.

The versatile defender has not kicked a ball since injuring his hamstring a year ago in a top flight defeat to Liverpool. Byram then developed complications that required a further operation, but Farke indicated yesterday he still faces a long road back.

“It is hard to predict,” he said. “It is not easy from the mental point of view for him at present. He is seeing some specialists and is able to do some low intensity runs. We have to be careful to give him a chance to get back on the pitch. He is a great guy and we will give him all the freedom to do this without too much pressure from the club.

"When you are out this long it is not easy to come back. Let's be honest. He won't return to the squad this season but the most important thing is he makes progress and perhaps there is a chance to have him back next season.

“You have to treat him as normally as you can. I try to and put a smile on his face, to make some jokes. There are more dangerous fates in life and he is still living a privileged life to be in this business.

"We hope he returns to our group, and he is an integral part of it."

You have to feel sorry for him on a human level. But he probably won't have to work again when he hangs up his boots.

Yes, just read that.

Hope I’m wrong but I can’t see him playing again for us which is a real shame for us as he was looking great but is of course even worse for Sam.

Typically warm and human response by Farke. Somehow you get the sense from his remarks that there is a tiny percentage chance of him returning but probably not at the level we will be at. Sounds like the biggest rehabilitation is going to be psychological.

Very sad, but as said still privileged as he’ll be well looked after by the club with full support.

Lesson to be learned is not to buy from West Ham! At least he was cheaper than Sick Note Jarvis! 😉

This is the quid pro quo for clubs with budgets like ours. If you want experienced quality players you end up getting those with a history of injury issues as these are the ones that meet the budget constraints. Then it’s a case of hoping they avoid any serious injuries.

Took a chance on him but looks like his obvious talent will always be let down by his injury record. Guess that's why we got him so cheap. Real pity. Hope he can get a real run of games in the future..

Never say never. He is in the best possible place to get back his fitness, whether its to play football or just to get fit.  Sincerely hope he gets his fitness back soon and can up his training to more competetive levels.

When all is said and done, Byram has been a pretty expensive signing - maybe not in his initial fee but 2-years of PL wages while not many matches will have tied up quite a bit of our finances.  It’s one of those things - you have to take the punt sometimes and it will sometimes not work out - he’s clearly a decent player when fit.

Byram will be back for next season then this board will have to find someone else to whinge about. He clearly has a lot of talent, and one major injury, especially muscular, doesn't mean it's curtains for his career. He's very good, and I'm sure he'll go on to play for us next season.

I really hope you're right but being out for a year (now more) with a hamstring injury and with this somewhat depressing summary from Farke, it reinforces my view that I've had for sometime that he's unlikely to play professional football again. A fully fit Byram would be a major advantage for us next season but it is not going to happen. By the way who exactly has been 'whinging' about him? Most fans have just been very sad for him and the club that he has been cruelly cut down by an awful injury and it's obvious long term ramifications.

He is still a player of talent, will get fit enough in time to play again.  At 27 and with having had a year or so out of the game, his body will not be so worn out as other players of his age and once fit, could still have plenty of years to play the game at a good level.

Louis Thompson in the same boat I suspect. Some players just don't have the physiology to be able to play at that level without hurting themselves - they used to call it "injury prone" but I guess you're either lucky or unlucky sometimes.

I think I remember that moment he got injured... He was playing quite well against Liverpool. Tried to reach a ball with his foot and overextended. Didn't realize then it was this serious. I miss his contribution. A lot of talent and fighting spirit.

There's a great article Michael Bailey wrote about him a year ago for The Athletic. I highly recommend reading it. He's fighter. If anyone can recover, he can.

One thing I don't think helps is a mob of people "pulling the plug" on his career. I almost hope he doesn't read this forum. I am a little bit annoyed about some attitudes here. Happened with Pukki's toe injury too...he was practically written off. Now look at him.

The story a few months back was that he'd returned to light running twice and hadn't been able to make it past that stage. So unless a specialist can do something miraculous I can't see him playing for us again.

A little over the top i think to say a mob of people are pulling the plug on his career. There is optimism and then there is reality, posters like Lakey remain optimistic and others me included see the reality of it by taking on board what DF is saying in that article.

Business head first, not like he won't be compensated. He'll never kick a ball in anger for us again.
