Flashback- Farke's very fist competitive match for us

Recommended Posts

How much do you remember this one? The 1-1 draw away from home, in which Oliveira infamously went and tore off his shirt and ran straight to Farke with it..noo.png

Gosh. Just one remaining of the starting 11

I suppose you can say he made a decent fist of it... didn’t lose at least.

Ironically, given the typo in the title, I watched the Justin Fashanu documentary last night.

A difficult but also fascinating watch. Highly recommended and not just for the Norwich clips.

The fact that there are still people out there that think it's the height of comedy to make jokes and chants about him and his death really does **** me of to no end

Thankfully I remember it as the day a manager finally had the balls (a few weeks after this) to realise that Russell Martin should be nowhere near the first team.

Only 2 years too late.

You can tell Farke wasn't happy with his lot, some of those names are dreadful. Marley Watkins, James Husband, bloody hell.

He deserves endless credit as he has totally transformed the club - when looking at this squad, we could so easily have become an average midtable team with players of this "quality"

Had only ever seen snippets of him as a player, but I saw part of an interview he did with Clive Anderson a couple weeks ago.

He was incredibly articulate, and way ahead of his time.

Anyone even remember Franke? Seems he played five matches for us but god knows I forgot he even existed until now

Rather amazing how much the squad has developed since that game!

I think you'd possibly take 3 of those back, Reed I've always like, Maddison obviously, and Gunn wouldn't have been a bad understudy to Krul.

Look back at this, Husband and Wildschut as wingbacks, brave!

What an incredibly boring season that was. The home 0-0 vs burton albion was a shocker. If someone wouldve told me then what would come for the 3 seasons after that one then I would've never believed them.

I was there but don't recognise some of our players that day who the hell was Watkins.   Also don't remember Wildshutt in starting line up how useless was he.  Recruitment has improved since those days.

Wow marley Watkins, one of the worst players I've seen play for us in the last 20 years, signed on a free and Webber working his magic and selling him for £1.5m the summer after.

If I remember right we failed to beat Stevenage and lost to Sutton in the pre season friendlies and then went on to be unable to beat Burton Albion twice in the season.

God it was such a souless, pointless feeling season throughout that you just felt would end with a midtable finish, with most players in the squad just looking like they would rather be anywhere else.. And midtable is what we finished, at 14th and two places below Ipswich.

Genius move indeed.

At the time of course, there were differing views... e.g.

You have two players here, Hernadez and Watkins - it is important that BOTH are integrated and involved.  Ok if you want to write off Watkins, but the idea - strange as it might seem - must to be get him up to the required level - and maybe he has improved in training to the extent of deserving a start.  Hernandez as to prove himself too and the dynamics of the situation is probably that they are are competing with each other for a start - and that is what having a squad is all about.

versus e.g.

In Marley - I see a player who works hard running around on his tiptoes for 90 mins but achieving very little else

Poor first touch, unable to hold the ball up, passing is poor, doesnt win much with his head, rarely shoots, isnt strong in the tackle, isn''t technically gifted, positional awareness needs improving

Other than that, he''s okay

😁

My memory of the game was of a couple of non City fans of the “I’m hard” type in the Norwich end standing up for a large part of the game being finally challenged by a petite female Fulham steward who ultimately escorted them out.👏👏👏😂

Gunn has gone a long way backwards since his season with us. Some of the goals he's let in for Stoke have been pretty poor. To think he cost Southampton £13m......conversely, what a spell Reed is having with Fulham.

Can't disagree with that statement, but still think he'd do well as a no2 to learn off someone like Krul.

Reed is great, if Fulham go down I'd definitely like us to run the rule over him, he's no Skippy but he's certainly worked in our system before

Imagine Justin in today’s environment. Would be a multi millionaire- the homophobia would be much less of a problem and his articulation would make him stand out. Great looking gay guy , ex professional footballer and highly intelligent. A modern PR dream

A terrible terrible tragedy (and a brilliant documentary btw)

Harrison Reed would be an excellent replacement for Skipp. But we're never going to be signing established Premier League players like him. The wages would be far too high.

The only good thing about that season was Maddison if we're honest. The footy was tepid, tippy-tappy ****e with billions of passes along the halfways line and little attacking impetus. Maddison was the only one who gave us any attacking spark really.

The only thing I'll remember about that season aside from Madders, is Hull away, which was an utter belter of a game. Given we had little riding on it, I didn't even care we lost, I just remember driving the 80 miles home feeling that I had been thoroughly entertained even in defeat. About the only time I've taken a defeat so positively. Maddison got a hat-trick, 4 penalties (2 for each team) and we lost 4-3 after being 3-1 up inside 40 mins!

Funnily enough the Millwall 4-0 game shortly after this came on my YouTube recommended the other day and I took a look. We went to The Den with a midfield 5 of Reed, Maddison, Hoolahan, Murphy and Vrancic.

Not really too surprising that we lost the aerial/physical battle!

Farke has learned a hell of a lot in 3 years.

Let's not rewrite history, we were dreadful and like many results in Farke's season we were lucky to get any result. The players we had in Farke's first season were incapable of playing his style of football so we just gave the ball to Maddison to make things happen as we lacked technical and tactical nous. Most clubs would have dispensed with Farke after that first season despite it being blindingly obvious that the players were the problem.

Hate to think what may have had happened had we not had Maddison that season.

I remember turning up for the first home game seeing so many new players thinking OMG who are these players?

It was a huge season of transition, largely dour football offset by the brilliance of Maddison. Luckily Emi Buendia and Teemu Pukki turned up the next season, coupled with emerging brilliant young players and most of the rest are now history.
