Pukki's first goal yesterday

Recommended Posts

Was a far from usual goal we expect from Teemu.  A first time shot sublimely slotted into the top corner.  20 goals this season with 9 in the last seven games.  But seeing a different goal yesterday poses the question could he have scored many more.  Certainly you cannot criticise the output but subtle changes may have improved the stats.  An example was the chance against Brentford 1n the 46th minute, Pukki took the ball too wide giving the keeper a relatively easy save, perhaps he could have taken on the shot earlier.  Not for the first time this season he has not scored one on one with the keeper and wasted an opportunity when an earlier attempt would have reaped rewards.

Also we all know the Pukki brand of scoring goals as the vast majority are carbon copies.  Yesterday saw a goal scored with elevation not usually in Pukki's locker, perhaps if it were utilised more and shots had a little more height we would see more goals.  Penalty miss at Birmingham come to mind.  More goals like the volley against Newcastle last season would be welcomed.

Churlish yes but just some points to encourage Pukki to score more maybe.

Brilliant. How long did that take to come up with Peteo? If he scored more, we'd have more goals. If he gave more elevation to his shots then some would be high and wide, not just wide.

I have seen some call Pukki a 'tap in merchant' which is rather exaggerated. Sure, he is a fantastic finisher and most of the time when he get's the chance to shoot the balls in the back of the net.

But that ignores all the hard work all across the pitch he does- He makes fanatstic runs all the time, often making a run before a player has even passed the ball to him. You often see him tracked back halfway down the pitch to defend and get the ball back, nevermind Pukkis fantastic stamina- He just never looks tired.

Really?

If that is an opinion form our support then they are idiots of the highest order who probably do not watch many games.

If that's an opinion from oppostion fans then ether they are jealous or a bit dim, or both.

In order to be a tap in merchant , you have to be in the right place.
Pukki’s movement and reading of the game is excellent - so even if he was a tap in merchant it shows his class.

He scores an inordinate number of his goals with his first touch. To state that he should take more earlier and that it's unusual suggests to me that you have not been paying attention.

Not from our fans, people on social media who only ever saw him play one or two matches in the prem then called him a 'massive flop and tap in merchant' while ignoring his serious injury and that 11 goals for a team bottom of the table isnt bad, and 11 goals that season was more than several 'top class' strikers at top five teams scored that season anyways..

30 tap-ins are 30 goals. If a striker's getting you those, he's getting you a pile of wins and points. I don't remember Pukki scoring many from outside the box, but as others have said, his game is all about getting into position when in possession, and he does that supremely well.

IMO the reason that Pukki’s first goal was shot high into the net was Cantwell was having a ‘mare of a game and passed the ball behind, not in front of him. So Pukki had to first dig it out of his feet before shooting. Very good but not to be repeated. And fortunately Cantwell scored so his sub-par performance can be ignored apparently.

Regardless of his way of getting the goals you also want to remember how much we paid for him.

I love him for his non tattoo no showboat style of celebrating his goals .  A knee slide at best with just a great big grin on his face .

Totally agree and suspect without that injury, a better defence and more forgiving VAR he would have bagged nearer 20 goals last season.

After missing those two first half chances against Brentford, he upped his game in the second half and his shots were more incisive, without scoring. Same against Luton, looked a lot more assertive in front of goal and he didn't mess about with that finish. Didn't come to him ideally, but he put it away decisively.   Now second highest scorer, behind  Hanley's pocket dweller.

Pukki's has never been one for striking the ball hard, often looking to simply place the ball in the back of the net. Funnily enough though 2 of his goals recently with his left foot, against Birmingham and Rotherham, were both hit pretty hard. Maybe that is Teemu making up for his weaker foot by simply hitting it and hoping a bit more instead of a precise finish into the corner.

Got to be honest I've never heard anyone refer to Pukki as a tap in merchant, but even if he was that's not a bad thing, didn’t do Linekers career any harm 🤷‍♂️

Pukki doesn't need to change what he's doing, he's got 20 goals this season and will score more before the season is out. Whether he could have scored more or not is irrelevant, they are still very impressive stats and he's not a million miles away from what he did 2 seasons ago

Agree with this - I always thought one of his strengths is how early he gets shots away, not giving a keeper the chance to get set for the save.

It feels to me that when he's a bit lower on confidence he loses this particular aspect a bit.

I commented in the match that he seems to do better with the instinctive half chances, than he does when he has lots of time on the ball in a 1 v 1 situation.

Most of his goals are either one touch finishes, or a 1 v 1 where he just needs to takes a touch to set himself and then slot it in.

He seems to be less effective though when he gets through on goal and has lots of time / ‘no pressure’. There’s been a few times this season where he’s ran through like this and hit it straight at the keeper or missed badly...

He still does score the easier 1 v 1 chances of course, but I’d say he has a much higher conversion rate than your average champs striker with these half chance / instinctive / 2 touch 1 v 1 situations than he would have in comparison to the ‘no pressure’ 1 v 1 situations.

He could surely be more deadly in these positions IMO.
