Giannoulis V Quintillà- Who's 1st choice now then?

Recommended Posts

New boy, based on the fact he is gonna cost 6m plus if we buy him. Anyone think he's gonna sit on the bench?

Would be a surprise imo if he walked straight into the team. Sorensen has earned the right to stay there - in a winning team - at least until we drop points, at which point changes could be justified.  Not even sure if he would be ahead of Quintilla straight away, after all he has to be assimilated into the way we work, the fitness regime, the tactics, getting to know the players etc.

So as good as he might be, he may be restricted to cup games for now and maybe the odd few minutes from the bench in the league. Gradual assimilation is the norm for most players that come to us. Another option, but not necessarily stepping straight into the team.

Edit: So just looked at his highlights, so I'm probably wrong, looks very handy going forwards....him and Placheta on the left could be dynamite!  Quintilla is no slouch either, so good options on the left either way! But then how do you drop Sorensen?  Nice problems for Farke to have!

Thought this was worthy of a debate. Both on loan too- If we would could only end up with one who would you prefer to see it be?

If we had to choose one, we would be pretty silly to loan-to-buy Giannoulis in January but then buy Quintilla instead - the player we already had - at the end of the season. Giannoulis would surely have to flop pretty badly for that to happen!

But presumably we don't have a choice on Giannoulis as it definitely will be made permanent if promoted? Whereas Quintilla is an optional buy (I think)?

In terms of right now, who is first choice? Sorenson...

We will hopefully get a good glimpse of Giannoulis in the cup but I'll be surprised if he starts in any of our next 3-4 league games.

Farke likes to tease!

Well we have to play him when he costs over £6M but that wouldn't be until next season.

So the only way we find out if he is worth buying is to play him. Which means Quintilla, who before he was injured came into question for his defensive capability, would have to sit it out.

Sorenson looked far better against Coventry than he ever has as emergency full back.

I also saw on the Athletic that Sorenson is now viewed as a long-term left back option.

He has done very well I would agree, but is he actually a good left back, or a good midfielder-being-shoehorned-into-a-left-back left back?

I'd personally rather see him in his preferred position, and a proper left-footed left back in his current place. Particularly when we have someone like Cantwell on the left who likes to drift inside.

But of course more than happy to see him cover full back positions in the future.

Bit odd given how great sorensen played when we played in his natural midfield position for us.

Had most passes and most accurate passes of any player on the pitch that match

If we go up we're going to need two quality left backs. I think both will still be here next season (assuming Q's injury problem doesn't scupper a move).

Cant see us spending a combined £9m on specialist left backs.

Said on another thread I dont expect to see a great deal more of Quintilla this season.

Agreed and Farke did a while ago make reference to the fact he was being played out of position. I would expect Dimitris to slot straight in, " he totally fits the way we want to play" said Farke, sounds like a big hint to me.

Personally I wonder if, when fit Mumba may be the back up at left back. He was the one who played their before Sorenson if I remember correctly?

Hopefully sick note Sam will be able to play a couple of games next season.

Farke said in the presser today that the club's search for a CB this window is off.  Signing Gianoullis means LB sorted, Sorenson is earmarked as CB cover!  Probably says more about the paucity of CB talent out there, than NCFC's transfer pit or Sorensen's defensive qualities.  Still welcome Gianoullis.

None of us have seen the new guy, but if they were 100percent convinced by Quintilla (either performance or fitness wise) then we wouldn't loan someone in with an option to buy.

Personally I thought that Quintilla lacked physicality (strength for championship and definitely pace and power  for the premier League) and was a touch underwhelming defensively. So my guess is that the new man will be number one if he smashes it from now until end of season.

Can't see us signing both, but isn't Quintilla like 2.7m ? Cheap, but injury prone I think

If giannoulis is 7m, it's not a fortune for a premier League (or even a championship) club to spend on an international defender.

I’ve posted on another thread that Michael Bailey has said today that Quintilla is an optional buy until he plays in half our Championship games this season. So it looks very much that Farke and Webber have had a look at him and decided to pass. Plus given 1) the other clubs who’ve tried to buy him and 2), the surprise internally that he’s actually signed, I don’t think there’s any doubt that Dimi is first choice.

He came on as sub for a few minutes in that position, but is also a right-footer. He's Aarons' future replacement.

Yeah I just mean he might be considered an option at left back for the remainder of this season.

Yes I agree, he's too good not to be starting. We now at last have two dedicated left backs and Sorensen can play in his best position.

NCFC showing some intent to recruit probable Premiership quality players rather than relying too much on long term development players. Gianoullis deal is clever business

At the moment, Sorensen. He'll have to earn his place, but I'm assuming long term he'll go on to be first choice.

I'd be amazed if it isn't Giannoulis, after a few weeks of adaptation. I can't see us pushing this hard for a player of his reputation if he isn't being viewed as a key player.

Quintilla can still be his backup if we need him, as he needs to play 16 of our remaining 22 games to trigger the obligation to buy, I believe. We can use him 15 times when we need to, but I think the club have probably decided that they don't want to make his deal permanent even though £2.3m doesn't seem like a terrible deal to me.

Sorensen should be given a chance in his natural position. If he is being seen as a long term possibility at left back, I'd be pretty hacked off if I were him, as it's almost a punishment for being 'too good' as a makeshift. Also, if he's that good out of position, imagine how good he'll be when he's in midfield?

Can see a mini reshuffle. Giannoulis - LB, Sorensen - DM, McClean - AMC

I like this idea.

For Sorensen to play CM he'd have to get ahead of Rupp, Kenny, Tettey & even Vrancic - he's shown he's defensively sound, can pass the ball and has good positioning - there's more to the position than just doing that ! If paired with Skipp he'd have to be the creative partner of the pairing. At the moment he's the No 1 Leftback - got there via his performances. When the pressure came on from Cardiff in the 2nd half, Sorensen made the difference and most probably saved us the points. Under the same sort of pressure could Giannoulis have survived that aerial onslaught - I doubt it ! But we need to see him play - if on the video's alone will bring better balance to the left hand side but cannot see him being a better defender than Sorensen.

Sorensen may well be Skipp's replacement if we can't get him for next season. That said, the ball he hit against Bristol was not of a player who can't create.

I think Hanley, Gibson and Zimbo have proved more than capable so far this season. We also have options who can play there (Sorensen, Tettey, Omobamidele).

The new cb signing can wait until the summer, when we're hopefully promoted. It will most likely be someone earmarked to go straight in the starting eleven next to Gibson, so it will be easier to attract a PL quality centre back when we're there.

Credit to Webber, the defense is starting to looking excellent.

Agree that it was a good pass. Pukki makes things earlier for others with his movement and runs. Creativity with team-mates standing behind defenders or no movement from your strikers requires a special breed !  1 assist in 20 games would not do if he was a CM.

I think the club are probably delighted with Sorensen's contribution this season. He is only 22, coming into a league which is a clear jump from where he was before, all while playing in an unfamiliar position (and impressing when played in his natural one). Skipp was probably brought in with the idea that Sorensen may take time to settle in mind.

As well as he has played, Sorensen is not a left back-our attacks down the left side invariably slow down as he has to come inside to play the ball with his right foot. Having a left footed player at left back is essential and now that we have 2 left footed left backs in the squad, one of them should be starting there.

How many assists does Skipp have? I think the assists stat can be very misleading when it's applied to players occupying positions where you wouldn't necessarily expect them to be the penultimate contributor to a goal.

Imo we should be playing the new guy and Sorensen should be played in his natural role.

We are very likely going to be playing in the prem next season. We should be getting the players ready for that. Skipp will likely not be here and that could be said for Quintilla too (he's got a great left foot but a prem starter for me). We need a strong core team that will have played half a season together before promotion. Obviously, we can add new players during the summer but they'll need bedding in.

I would like to see another potential prem standard player signed in this window too.
