Poor standard

Recommended Posts

The standard of the championship is very poor in relation to the prem, although this has helped us to get promoted this season the gap is not good for football in general .Next season we will have to be at our best even to have a chance of winning. It has been too easy and this has done us no favours in the long term.

One of the issues which relates to this is player recruitment.

We're still hearing from Farke about players for the rest of this season rather than planning for the Premier League.

We still appear to be linked with players who we might be able to bring up to Championship level.

We failed to prepare last time and it wasn't pretty, surely it's not beyond the wit of man to ask that our recruitment ups it's game.

Well it looks like those at the club disagree with you, No9, as a quote from the pinkun story says “Giannoulis is the man identified by Stuart Webber’s recruitment department as a Premier League grade option, as City look to find a longer term successor to Jamal Lewis“ that’s completely different to your assertion.

Thanks, I've not seen that quote, I'll read it.

Number 9 - your glass is very half empty!! apart from you being well, far too previous to conclude we will be promoted, see where we are in another 15 games before opening up this debate. But your conclusions that we are buying to championship level is quite frankly also ludicrous. Cantwell, Arrons and Buendia all older and wiser, Gibson and our new Greek are premier league transfers! Others are growing quickly including Sorensen. Plenty of time to worry about the Premier league, and way early to judge recruitment for it! Webber has rarely let us down anyway !

This is the highest quality I have ever seen from the top 5 in the Championship. Normally there are one or two genuinely decent teams with the likes of Middlesbrough, Forest and Blackburn competing for the playoff places. This season there is only one spot available for one of the perennial Championship clubs because the three relegated teams alongside the two best remaining teams from last season are all playing at a higher level.

Seems to be at both ends of the table this season- Top half is full of fantastic quality yet bottom half is abysmal. And yes, I know that tends to be the way but it seems a lot more extreme this season.

Watching Liverpool Vs United ATM and neither look world's ahead of us considering they currently occupy the two spots in the country. Were we in the same league as them this season I think we'd feel we could at least take some points from them.

Whether or not the Championship has got better is irrelevant. It's the standard of the Premier League that matters. I watched Fulham yesterday and thought we would struggle against them. They're in the bottom 3.

Whoever it was above who thinks Gibson is a Premier League player is looking at the world through yellow and green glasses. Available last summer but not a hint of interest.

We have 5 Premier League standard players for next season if we keep them. Possibly 6 if the Greek guy signs. I'm sure we'll go up but I wouldn't bet on us staying there. A sad state of affairs for football in general

You may be a bit previous too I'm afraid.

Cantwell, Buendia & Arrons may not be / are unlikely to be here at the start of next season.

Gibson is on loan, hasn't been playing Premier League football.

The Greek player is an unknown quantity in this country and English leagues.

Sorensen is a midfielder who Farke won't play in midfield for Championship, is he going to set a Premier League midfield alight in six months time?

There is not plenty of time to worry about it, no one knows what the end of this season and pre season training will look like.

Preparedness would surely dictate players arriving now to be assimilated into the group, raise our team level and ready to actually survive in the Prem.

Plus, it's not just about players, Farkes tactics for the Prem were embarrassing and naive.

We haven't improved by enough, we still allow below par teams numerous attempts at our goal. Big League players will punish that every game.

The obvious one being Skipp who made 2 horrendous errors yesterday. In the Premier League they end up in the net

I disagree, the standard in the Championship has improved imo in the last 5 or so years and I think the top 5 or so this year are as strong as ever. The quality in L1 has dipped dramatically with the wage cap and while I don't think the technical ability or tactical nous of the PL has improved at all the physical and athletic standard has absolutely sky rocketed in the past few seasons and it's what makes survival so hard for a smaller, more technical side like us.

At this level we often look at cut above physically even against bigger sides but when we face a PL team or a team like Watford it's like men vs boys and that is what will have to be addressed should we get promoted. We'll need to sign 2 or 3 good quality physical fast midfielders with excellent dribbling skills, a set piece specialist, a commanding defender and one of those tall, pacy strikers who can run with the ball and shoot from distance if we're to have any chance of adapting to that level.

I'm not naive enough to think we can afford that though so if we do get promoted I'm pretty sure it will be very tough for us again. I'm just trying to enjoy this season game by game and not thinking too much about next season tbh. We need to get promoted to keep the cash coming in but another season in the Pl won't be fun!

Generally, he's deserved his spot in the starting line up. It's easy to forget that he's young and still learning, obviously he won't be with us next season either.

Moaning about the team not being good enough for a league it isn't in, predicting us to lose our 3 star players even if promoted, bringing down other squad members...

Never mind though Number9 'ey we'll all be dead soon enough, won't we?

I'm sure there might be some positives you could find about the club if you really tried!

Number 9 it appears you are an Scum infiltrator ! Or a disillusioned human being, certainly not a true Norwich fan. If you were you would appreciate that Farke will likely be viewed in the future as the best manager Norwich ever had and Webber the best at his role, if you had half a clue, or did not wear blue you would appreciate that!!

I feel that 2 years ago, when we were pushing for top spot at this stage of the season, that we had reached the peak of our performance levels (as in we could not improve on how we had been playing, the players seemed to be playing at the peak of their skills ) It was with great satisfaction, that we maintained those levels for much of the rest of the season, and other teams could not maintain as high a  standards as we showed.

This season we are clear of the pack (3rd place being the marker) and yet, I feel we have another couple of levels within this squad and their performances. Added to that, is that I don't see any other teams at the same levels as Leeds or Sheff Utd from that season, certainly not for a sustained challenge anyway.

It is ours to lose.

I too watched most of the game Jarders, (missed the first 30 minutes).

I would suggest we are (no pun intended) not even in the same league as those two teams. We certainly do pass the ball nicely and at times it looks superb in games. However when we are really pressed we often struggle and will lose that ball.

Both those teams play a similar style however there is one big difference. They are both consistent in their fantastic standard of passing and no matter how much you squeeze them they find that pass, player to player and from the back to the front continually even against each other. Regaining possession against those types of teams is very difficult. Their play is extremely accurate and very skilful.

If we played them this season I suspect we would find points very hard to come by.

I'm a percy positive, but to suggest we would match both Man Utd and Liverpool right now, is a bit of a leap.

Sorry Hank just responding to the op in a realistic way, I'm not overly optimistic because we haven't fully dealt with the issues we had before last season.

We are a level above the teams we've been playing and if we continue we will be promoted, probably as champions.

Farke has an awful lot of to learn, a couple of months ago we finished a run of breaking all the worst records in our clubs history. I'm sure you're not proud of that, and I'm sure you expect Farke to learn from his mistakes and up his game.

I appreciate that every time I've met him he's been a gentleman, but I don't close my eyes to his obvious failings in managing our team over the past year or two.

Planet earth calling.....

These teams are on a different level. I’m pretty certain that if we go up we won’t be getting a single point from those four games.

It’s about getting points from teams at your level.

Stats show that passes, ball retention ,ground covered etc all show a decline.

I don't know where you got these stats from, (would be interested to read them if you could supply a link), but I expect they are probably right.

However, assuming they are, there is a very obvious reason why it would be so. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic the already overcrowded Championship schedule has become even more compressed. Add to that the fact that the players barely had a two week close season and it's very obvious why the overall standard, and particularly the ground covered stats would show a decline.

Exactly Petriix, supporters of Championship sides been saying this is the weakest Championship season for a long time. They really couldn’t be more wrong.

nobody needs us to "set the prem alight", we need to make sure we finish 17th. If we build a solid back 5 and have a bit of quality going forward then we can easily get 40 points next season if we did go up. It would rely on more luck on the injury front though!

I guess the main concerns would be replacing Buendia since he'll likely leave in summer whatever happens. Do we have another player that could step in as the real difference maker? Sure Cantwell can be good on his day but I don't think he's quite talisman level yet as I think we're still figuring out what his best role is.

Past that, there'd be a potential Aarons replacement to be found if Byram can't get fit again but I suspect if we went up he might give us another season and we'd need to see if Jose would let us keep Skipp for another year somehow.

Let's just get there first tho...

There seem to be a number of people who want to relegate us again before we've even been promoted.

If and when we go up, and I fully believe we will, we will have a summer window where we know the PL money is guaranteed to improve the squad, and you can be sure that Webber knows we need to improve it. The finances already appear to allow for more to be done than 18 months ago.

We will need to keep most if not all of our stars and add perhaps 5 players to have any chance. If say Max, or Emi, goes for £35m then that will allow us to bring in perhaps 3 or 4 players of the required quality both in terms of fees and the required wages.

We need to get this job done first and then worry about the PL. Almost all of our squad turnover always gets done each summer under this leadership. Stop worrying about next August and enjoy what we are doing right now because it has been a remarkable effort.

I've seen a few comments on Farke being naive. I suppose if you play attractive football and lose, that's what people say. If you play like Hughton and lose, you get called negative. In the end the results are what matter. But there is no question in my mind that the way Farke has built our pattern of play provides a basis, the best we've had in a long time in my view, for us to succeed. We don't need to throw away Farkeball in the PL, we just need to get better at it.

I don't think people want to see us relegated. They're just being realistic. Our club is almost unique in terms of funding in the top 2 divisions and it's a damning indictment of the financing of football in this country that it is nigh on impossible for us to survive in the Premier League for more than one or two years.

I'm afraid that £35m is unlikely to buy us 5 players of the necessary quality. Even if we did get that much for Emi or Max it would buy 2 or 3 at the most. The Premier League has numerous players, even in the bottom half, who cost in excess of £10m who spend their time sitting on the bench.

I've loved watching us this season but I'm slightly dreading next year.

As for the quality of the Championship, other than 4 or 5 of our players, I can only think of Toney as an opposition player who looks to have Premier League quality and Swansea are the only other team that has really impressed me.

A sad state of affairs but at least we can be proud with the way our club is run.
