Soccer Saturday Paul Merson

Recommended Posts

Was watching our game yesterday.

Afterwards Jeff asked him if he thought we were promotion material and he said he wasn’t really convinced and thought Brentford and Swansea would go up automatically.

This is not the first time this season he has doubted our credentials and whilst he is entitled to his opinion I would like to have someone else watch us, to see what they think.

Let’s hope we make him Eat his words.

Fair enough if he thinks that but I’d be really interested to hear why when many pundits and managers have referred to us as the best team in the league.

Given our second half and the way we played against 10 man Cardiff, you can understand his opinion. He’s a neutral after all, but I can’t see us not promoted.

We would need to spend to stay up though.

They often have to say something a bit contradictory in hope they come across a bit more edgy rather than some old bloke desperately clinging onto his youth as a footballer.

He can barely string a sentence together. I wouldn't pay any attention to what he says but be grateful that sky are giving mentally challenged people a chance.

I'm not Mersons biggest fan but I don't remember him saying that.

He said that Brentford and Swansea were also candidates along with us. He described us as 'efficient but not great' when asked if we were certain to go up.

Are you saying Merson is in fact Lakey ? 😜

He was funny at first until he began to believe his own publicity.

It was amusing the way he used to get confused with the names of players (not those within his circle though!)

He once referred to Huckerby as Huckleberry, I seem to recall.

They all seem tarred with the same brush and only really become specialists when discussing things within their own clique, which in it's self seems mostly centred around the big six or seven clubs and their own mates. Outside of that framework they struggle.

Having said that even little Quest last night were more concerned with "Wayne Rooney's Derby County"  than the matches involving any of the leaders.

Merson also said that Chelsea can still win the league but Spurs couldn't so I don't think we need to get too worked up about his opinion

The guy always summarises us on soccer Saturday. Always off his t1ts bless him.

Dreadful pundit, never understood why these guys can keep getting a very handsome wage for being so bad at it.

Bit strange how he kept his job when Le Tissier was dropped

Like how Merse comes across as a person to have a laugh with, but not the sharpest tool in the box.

When asked an opinion, he invariably repeats his first line and then doesn't really offer 'insightful' punditry.

Tbf to him, he was asked in regards to yesterday's performance, and like has been said, we didn't score against 10 men and did not reach the 1st half levels. Just an opinion on the day.

I'm sure he hasn't seen lots of our games, and also hasn't taken into consideration which away games we have played and which home games we have to come, which may (or may not!) help with his analysis. As has been said, he'd rather be concentrating at the top of the Prem, where he is comfortable, but lack of fixtures yesterday didn't allow that.

On a side note, hats off to him becoming a Dad (again - his EIGHTH!)) at the age of 52

I dont think 'Norwich won't finish top 2' is likely to generate much controversy outside of this forum to be honest.

I think most people thought he would be the first to leave soccer Saturday but he was the one they kept. I will say in his defence if you just looked at our results we have not blown many teams away. In the end it's a results game and we are doing what we need to do.

Sky seems to be the most commercial in its output . The shock jock rubbish that (in my opinion ) makes Talk Sport unlistenable, creeps into their football coverage.
I wouldn’t take any notice. Merson is from a time long past.

Perhaps they didn't like the thought of the consequences and publicly if they got rid of him and the worst happened?

When you watch soccer Saturday you get the impression they're desperate for Bournemouth to go back up

Imagine if Eddie Howe was still there and they were pushing for promotion? What with his boyish good looks , ready wit and the whole cottage industry story of Bournemouth . Rags to riches . Plucky Southcoasters. Jumpers for goalposts . Is it ?

(shhh don’t mention the massively rich Russian bloke though )

I meant to post this on here yesterday, Broady - this is the kind of crap the BBC want us to pay towards with a TV licence. Until they start calling us Jan Molby’s Norwich, they aren’t seeing a single penny off me

It has to be said, the whole institution has gone to pot. The supposedly terrifying Andrew Marr asked Rabb for his views on the fact that several Scottish fishing companies were on the brink because of Brexit. "Oh, I doubt that's anything to do with Brexit" said Rabb. Marr thanked him for his answer and went on to ask about the Chinese.

Whatever side of the fence you sit, surely a follow up question was needed?  Not football related but for God's sake!

Should perhaps be posting this on non-football but it extends to sport as well. Having said that, the Sky pundits are as bad as it gets. Roy Keane gets paid a fortune every week to complain that one of the teams isn't kicking the other hard enough. There are several people on this forum that could do no worse.

Sky don't want the bad publicity they'd get if they sacked him and then he was pictured in the papers downing bottles of cheap red on a park bench.

It was fairly accurate though wasn't it? We were on the ropes a bit when Cardiff brought on that giant lump up front.

Cardiff look to be a poor side, but can't accuse them of not having a plan B.

Yeah but he never seems to give us the praise he does other teams: Bournemouth, Brentford, Swansea etc and who are top?

Genuine question, as I'm not a watcher of Sky's coverage, do any of Merson's mid-season predictions come true?

For those about to wet their pants about the fact he says we "might" not get automatic promotion, a small piece of solace.  Because everyone below us has to play each other, for NCFC NOT to get automatically promoted at least two clubs have to win at least 3 more games than us over the rest of the season.  Whilst I can see we may have the odd shocker, I can't see our form collapsing to gift that to others (we're not Leeds), or see more than one other team having the consistency to achieve such a run.  Especially with Covid around knocking squads.

Oh and Ricardo is pretty confident we're going up too.
